Terrible interference and NOISE CANCEL did nothing

I got permission to search a mansion built in the 1800's with 40' pillers and one half of the yard I was getting terrible interference that made it unsearchable. Static and numers were bouncing all over the screen and I couldn't get a clear signal under an inch down.
Underground power lines? There were none even near where I was searching. Anyone ever have a problem like this?

Hey Greg,
I've hunted a few places where I couldn't get it to run stable higher than the single digits in manual. Some places was able to better at another time. Not sure the cause; I had a hard on for sunspots at one time but am less certain now that this is the case. If you can do one part of the yard but not the other sounds like powerlines.
Haven't found noise cancel to be of much use either, seldom seems to do much. Think it might work well if the noise is a single frequency, like another metal detector nearby, but most noise tends to be wide band or have plenty of strong harmonics as is the case with power lines.
Try the location again some other day.

That has never crossed my mind before!! Now that I think about it, alot of guys search in some pretty bad neighborhoods and what if one of those crackheads lookin out the window got a little extra paranoid and started bustin caps.
Especially if he's getting interference on his end too!!

Yes, I had the same problem. I took out my XLT and it did the same thing. This property is over an acher and it seemed to do it all over. My site was also early 1800's or earlier. No underground anything except "invisable fence" for their dogs, and I was thinking it might be that?? I'll be following this link cuz my site warrents further investagation. Oh how do you like my spelling so far ?

Well I have had interference like this in several different ways. Noise Cancel did not help either..
1st I found it was leakage from cable transmission lines in urban area, just lowered SENs and lived with it.
2nd I was near Higher voltage tranmission lines ( the large towers that carry electricity over great distances) all I could do was lower SENs and live with it..
2nd Some older places Schools, HomeSites, Parks, Have hot rocks which make UR detector go CRAZY, This seems to be more likely if the site is OLD if I take the search coil away from the ground it stops. I think HOT ROCKs are remains from coal furnace, by-products from foundrys. Which I feel have metalic properties. If anyone has anymore knowledge on this subject please enlighten me (hotRocks)... What I do in this case is USE ferrous sounds and have IM at -15 or -16 depending on how thick the iron is.

In my case I turned the sen's down to single numbers to no avail. coil in the air made no diff. If I held it perfectly still ,in the air or on the ground it kept "talkin" as if I was swinging in a high trash area. I,m hopeing its that "invisable dog fence but I have my doubts. I'm remembering another time 3 years ago that gave me the same problem with my XLT. Any more ideas guys???

it helps me with the noise if I turn the gain down to 4 or 5 or less but the cursor is still bouncing around everywhere. At least you can hunt by sound better.
