Terramat Bonanza, BH Landstar Inspired!:please:

After a brutal and dismal week of beachhunting, hunting miles of barren sand, I went to the coinstar yesterday and cashed in a total of 4.03...OK I kept some fresh drop change, but still, I figure I only found about 8 or 9 bucks all week and covered 40 miles of sand...:sadwalk:..such is beachhunting, its boom or bust.... that danged old BHLandstar got me thinking about his massive clad haul last weekend, and I needed to hear some PINGS very much badly! Since its rained real well all week, I figured I'd go on a clad stab spree this am and give the beach a rest...I scoped out a sports/highschool complex I've never been to and formulated a plan...35 miles away, after getting up at 5 and checking the Forums, I headed on over there...got out of my car at 6.09am...

Fired up the F70 quick broom set for light fast work, found something very interesting in all the sportsfields that some of you may have seen...Terramat! I'm not sure thats what its called, but its some sort of nylon net down in the grass?...you know how some totlots have that black fabric under the chips? Well this stuff is different, its like a net, and its green, and its maybe 1"mesh...absolutely impossible to dig a trowel through, hard to even cut with a knife!...seems to have been laid down when a field is resurfaced under the sod... PERFECT for a clad stabber with a screwdriver!

Well sir, my feet were plenty soaked in short order, the grass was deep and wet, I figured it would make an easy job of cutting my toenails once I got home, and I was right, didnt have to use the right angle grinder...
I commenced to hitting Q signals at the 4,5,6" depth...ran through the sidelines and concession area pretty fast, stopped and thought a little, reset everything for deeper targets and went back through...more Q's! took another breather and went to the car and dumped out my heavy pouch...it was only 9:16am and the beer store does'nt open until noon!

So I went back in there after the dimes and nickels..then I freestyled under the bleachers with little effect, hotrocks, and somebody is working this place for fresh surface drops and doing a good job of it! I found another Q heavy area near the longjump pits, and got a 4Q stack and the Dollar coin along with nickels and more Q's there....I knew I had a great day going...only grabbing Q's, and shallow D's and solid N's...so heres the total:
236 coins, for 43.48, and a knife.....I was back in my rig by 11:12 and drove slowly home to arrive at the beer store at Noon...I believe this is my best day in the shortest time on clad...and the inspiration of our brothers, a nice fast rig, and a screwdriver made it all happen! :beers:

WOW !!! you killed it in that spot ..
nice job ... i got out before the storm this morning
musta dug 100 holes in an hour for a handful of pop tops
a dozen shell casings and shot gun shell caps.
and one wheat penny ... 1926 ...

i could use one of those beers .... got a penny to pitch in ... :)

what machine are you using. you could try full disc. dig one hole and still get the wheat. would give you more time to hunt also. good luck

Normally i have been running an AT Pro.
i was out this morning with the BH3300 . discrimination set to all iron.
at the moment i am picking the area for everything from 8 10 inches and up no matter
what the detector reads. i am getting 100`s of slightly deeper iron signals
i plan to come back over and re dig the deeper iron signals
in the winter when its not 90+ out and humid as all hell.
i normally have to chop through some good size roots to get to my targets.
makes a 100 holes feel like 1000 . and 2 inches feel like a foot .
been digging up some really nice colonial to civil war era items
out here in my little hidey hole ... cant wait till it cools down a bit
so i can check out these deeper signals ... should have most the garbage
out of there when i come back over it .... i plan on digging it all ...
im a relic hunter. normally find very few modern coins or items as i hunt deep in the woods.

Good going Mud ! You was just shy of my weekend total ($50) of last weekend. :clapping:

Yeah, BH, almost!.. yesterday I got a nickel, 2 dimes, and 2 pennies off the sand in 4hrs! :stretcher:

I sometimes wonder if a guy can make more money doing intensive clad stabbing versus detecting gold rings? Sadly, I think clad stabbing IS the winner in that particular contest! It's nowhere near as much fun as detecting a nice heavy 925 silver ring or a 14K 14 plus grammer ring but you have to pay for the gas to get to the beach, or park, or wherever!!! and maybe a parking lot fee and lunch and drinks while your detecting! I
I really don't want to add up what it costs me to do what I do because after all, none of us will get rich doing this hobby but the thrill of it as well as a great workout, as well as meeting interesting people and making friendships is more than sufficient payment for this awesome hobby!:clapping:

Hey Mud, that terramat is something that they use for sod. The sod farms put it down and grow the sod over it. I guess it makes it easier to keep the grass from tearing apart when they cut it in long strips and roll it.

LOL ....... yes, clad wins for me too at the moment, I pulled just over $20.00 in two hours this weekend, most of it in quarters.

All I can figure is they rolled new sod out over the old, several years ago, maybe longer, and trapped all these coins beneath it, oldest date on a Q was 1966, not that that means anything, but these have been here for quite a while from what i can tell...whoever is sweeping up the fresh drops evidently just picks them up off the surface with a PP or something, I hit a line of buried fenceposts, so the place must have been fenced as well, protecting all the clad.....the sprinkler heads were really countersunk down in the grass a good way....

I like to try to make this sport break even, but with gas up near 4, its getting very hard to do it...all a guy needs is one great hit on something, a key date, something...and you never know where that can be found. Clad keeps a guy good and sharp, it requires some travel, thats when a fellow can trip across a tear out, and dig up a bag of gold coins I figure!....or find a monster chain or wad of bills in a totlot! Ya just never know!

If a guy was homeless, ie; no expenses, but had a detector, and a bicycle, he could meet his daily needs if he was in the right area, and is satisfied with 10-15 bucks in a few hours every morning....
Mud..

Shy, don't give away our secrets:rofl:

Mud.....you mentioned (I think in jest)!!!! about if one was homeless and had a detector etc;. I think in one park I visit where there is a number of homeless, in fact a lot, some of them just may own a cheap detector because the tot-lot is barren most of the time now. I always could find something of value and at least a few coins but it has been void of coins for awhile. I think they have seen me and learned the ancient art of detecting....bummer!!!!!
One more observation since you brought up the idea of someone picking up fresh drops,....a few months ago at another local park, a 'cowboy' detectorist.....I say 'cowboy' because he swooped in behind me and acted like this was his kingdom and property. He told me that he "regularly detected all the parks around here" (like it was his paper route)!!! and he acted like I wasn't welcome with the in the face stance!!!
I continued detecting of course and he moved across the rest of the park so quickly like all he was interested in was fresh drops. I figure he set his machine up just to get the top 2 inch finds and thats it. Even a guy like him though cannot get it all though!
P.s. I gotta get to the beach for a change of scenery and hopefully some more gold!

Goldie, theres a guy in my town, my age I reckon, mid 50's...he rides a non-descript, not worth stealing Huffy and pulls a raggetty Burley bike trailer behind it..he has beat up BH detector of some sort of vintage...everything he has, rides and wears can be bought at a garage sale for less than 100 bucks.

He's out every day, rain, shine, snow...collecting empty cans from trash cans/parks/gas stations/dumpsters and whatnot, he's also the first one after a festival/carnival/sportsevent/tearout of some sort...like most invisible people, NOBODY sees him, hell, the folks at the local gas station dont even know his name and he stops there daily! I have made it my quest to learn his routine and talk to him about once a week....I really want to do a proper interview with him one day, It may cost me a 10? Well worth it I figure....

I know his name and always treat him good...so after 3yrs, he's at this point somewhat comfortable with me I think...I am curious as to what his average daily take is?...He's not really an avid detectorist per se, just an overall scrounger of anything of value, and not as a hobby! For a living! Thats what makes this intriguing to me...Sure, he's half crazy, not friendly or talkative, but still, its very interesting for me to watch this guy and try to emulate his format which I may be consigned to surviving off someday, or at the very least, become a better hunter based upon how this guy rolls... silent, invisible, an opportunist that takes whatever the day may bring and makes the most of it...he does'nt drink or smoke, and he dont like people, nor does he seem to get all that excited about his finds when I ask...has to be an interesting story of how he arrived at this daily grind?

Do you still use a 3300 metal detector?
