Tell Us About Your "Trash" Signal That Turned Out To Be A Good Coin

When I first started Metal detecting, I used a White's classic ID. I lived in a mid 1800's farmhouse and started detecting around it. After a few wheaties, some old buttons, and a few late 1800's to early 1900's IHs, I came to the edge of a field. Now on the IDs, they only have 8 little blocks to ID the target. So with that in mind, I came across something that at first read penny/dime and quickly went to foil and then nail. And from a different angle it read nail and foil. I said to myself, its junk but what the heck I'll dig it. Only about 3 inches down I pulled a piece of foil out. As I did an 1862 indian head and a nail fell out. I guess being on the edge of a field it got churned up with the foil and nail. But what are the chances of an IH being wrapped in foil with a nail?? I don't know but being one of my first finds like that it has inspired me to dig everything and with that mentality I have found some other sweet finds.

(BUMP)

This was such an interesting thread hearing stories that I thought maybe it might be worth trying to revive...

Back early in the year deerman , Told me of some road work in his area and said I should hit it . Since he was going to be out of town . Well it was too cold for most of the time and when I went just lots of newer Penny's and clad a few wheat's . Well they finished putting in side walks and continued moving dirt around . Worked the area on a Saturday and picked about 30 wheat's and some clad and finally a crappy sound which was a green IH . and a shallow 1899 Barber . So as I'm working the area the construction crew is working at moving the dirt piles and in turn scraping the area between the road and new side walk about 5 inches off the top . I had worked the piles and got very little and what I did get was clad and junk . :rant:Sunday I went back and hit the spot across the street from the old high school . The school has never given me anything and the only guys I know who ever got anything that was years ago . I could see that this side of the street was probity used to cross the street by the local teens over the years . And reading my history the school date's from the 1920's and was predated by another school and the corner directly across from the school was a meeting place of the G,A,R ( now a public Library ). So you know I could get anything from that area . I turned my explorer on and coin city wheat's every where a token good for one tune then two mercs together I went over a signal only a foot from a new fire hydrant . And anyone who has a minelab explorer will know how that thing screams when you get close to big iron . And the signal was funny not like the mercs I just got . So I walked on next came a 43 quarter 3 IH's and about 30 plus wheat's and two more merc's I'm thinking wow five slivers a good day I went back to that funny signal one more time . Well I turned my coil on its side and I could get a brake in the signal a gap from the the signal to the hydrant . So what the heck I'll dig after a foot of sand and swing the coil over the hole at last I get a real good signal . I reach down and low and behold a barber half 1900 and a re swing another signal another barber half 1909 . I ended that day with digging 78 coins and two pocket watches and a Buffalo no date . I worked my way down to a church where the road had been worked on and there was a bunch of people hanging around and I was getting some odd looks so I went back from where I came . A week later Ross went down there a up close in the church yard he plucked a 1909 barber too .And Ross and I went back a few weeks ago and I got a chrome plated State Census Taker badge I'll have to post it its almost too large to be worn .

I love it when some one post a topic like this too . It gives all of us a chance to post our experiences and some time those experiences seem mundane to us but a reader like my self every read above has been KOOL To read and it made me think about my experiences .

Well this is probably not the answer many of you would be hoping to hear, but it is the truth so I 'm going to say it. At the age of 63 and a triple bypass survivor the answer is none. I no longer dig trash. Give me trash signal and I move along. I do not have the energy to be digging pulltabs on a hot day. Do I miss any goodies by doing this? Oh I am sure I do but I really don't care about amassing every lost coin or ring in my county, I leave those to the young, healthy and energetic. HH

My dad was a quintuple bypass survivor. You're really blessed and the fact that you're out and about is worth all the treasure you may have missed. Our prayers are with you. I sometimes have one of those weeks where "Today's the day I enjoy this hobby" and grab my Ace 250 or Tesoro Royal Sabre and listen to the "tones" and say to heck with the rest.

Hunting an old yard several times felt all the old coins had been dug so lowered my disc. thinking gold ring..

Got a sold tab hit 3 inches and out came a nice large gold filled(faker) ring with most of gold off...Replacing the plug I swung over it one more time and got a solid high coins hit...yep about 3 inches under the original dig came a 1836 large cent...So indeed cleaning out the trash may get you that goodie that everyone else missed due to masking...Other that come to mind are a worn seated dime that came in at 68 on an XLT about 10 digits or so too low and a nice gold ring that gave a ratty sound as the back was split causing the ring to be lost. Think about it one wonders how much good finds have we left lay for various reasons...
