Tejon which one?

WV62

Well-known member
I have been thinking of getting a new Tejon but I noticed they offer up 2 now, one with 9x8 and the other 11x8WS. I am pretty much a coin and inland jewelry hunter, so which would you guys think would be the best way to go.

I had a Tejon a couple of years ago and it had 9x8 coil and I was pretty happy with that.

It took me several years to get comfortable with wide scan coils on my Tejon. I don't own the 11x8 but I am happy with the 12x10 and two other NEL coils that I have. I haven't used the 9x8 or 5.75 concentric coils in a long time now.

Get the 11x8 package. That coil is nice. Pinpoints off the toe or heal of the coil. Great target separation.

YES, get the 11x8 coil, and also pick up a 5.75 to go along with it. I'm using the 5.75 "widescan" on my Vaquero, but if you don't have highly mineralized soil to deal with, the 5.75 "concentric" will likely pinpoint a little better. ^_^

It looks like the 11x8 is the one to go with. I was over on the Tesoro web site just looking at the detector line up and the Vaquero seems to be a lot like the Tejon and a little less money. If I was to go the with the Vaquero do you think I would be sorry? Like I said a couple of years back I had a Tejon and was pretty happy with it, but the dual disc, I only used one and just set it and hunted. So is the Vaquero a striped down Tejon? Now I am not saying that in a bad way, like one is better than the other. No need to buy more than you use.

My brother had Vaquero for a short time, but I never got to see it or check it out before he traded it or sold it.

Now that I have thought about this new detector, I know I said in my opening post that I am a coin and inland jewelry hunter but I am thinking this machine would be more for jewelry and my other detector would be for the coins.

Thanks for the coil advice,

had a T did ok on coins even silver ones, no FBS machine on old stuff but still found them, mid to low conductors great with a small coil, really it was the battery's that sold it off, like the one 9V on the V, V is a good all-rounder and if you don't need the duel disc and want a lighter machine the V is the way to go for coins and jewellery.

The Vaquero is a solid machine. With the new 11x8 coil, its real solid. rt6

Having both the Vaquero and Tejon, I have to say the Vaquero is handier and used more often. Love the Tejon too, but Vaquero is lighter and (a little) more "user friendly". On my own planted nickel tests, the Tejon seems only about an inch deeper. They both hit a 10" nickel. Dual disc on the Tejon is great; you set it so you don't have to thumb the disc; just flick your finger forward. Battery life is longer on Tejon, but you replace eight AAs, rather than just one 9v. I also like the variable tone control of the Tejon, but unless you're just chasing soft, deep signals, the Vaquero should have all you need. Either will do everything (except visual target ID) that the average guy needs.
If anyone were to ask me which Tesoro for land use, I probably recommend Vaquero as best all-around...pretty much what Tesoro designed it as. I say, get the Vaquero with 11x8, and also one of the 5.75s. ^_^

If you are hunting coins and jewelry, you will be much happier with a concentric coil. The concentrics just seem to discriminate better and don't false on iron or bottlecaps as bad. Pinpointing among aluminum junk with that widescan coil is a pain in the butt. If you feel you need a widescan coil, get the 5x10 elliptical. Easier to pinpoint with off the tip, and more sensitive to small gold pieces.

There is a lot of hype over the 11x8 coils, but i didn't see it being better at anything than ground coverage. I had a 4 pin, and still have a 5 pin. They weren't much deeper than a 9x8 concentric where I hunt.

The 11x8 is all the rage right now, so I know I won't change your mind. But at least get a concentric coil to go along with it and see how you like it.

Can't go wrong with either machine, but for coins and just general use the Vaquero is probably better suited. The Tejon can be a handful. You will be digging up scraps of aluminum the size of a BB. I had one, and miss it for relic hunting, but wouldn't miss it for any other type of hunting.

I will have to agree with ThumperJones. You will be much better off with the 9x8 concentric on a Vaquero in modern areas looking for coin and jewelry.

I am also a fan of concentric coils which was the stock coil that came with my used Tejon, I also had the 5x10ws and one of the 5.75" coils, can't remember if it was ws or concentric. The 9x8 coil seemed to be my go to coil when I had the Tejon.

When I posted I was wanting to hear about both coils, but fist came pro 11x8 responses, then came support for the concentric.

I really appreciate the response for both the coils and the detectors, now I need to convince the wife I really need this second detector. LOL

Just to throw it out there, I think it's a lot cheaper to get the Vaquero with a 11x8 RSD and add another coil later than getting the 9x8 and having to fork out the big bucks for the new 11x8 RSD coil later.

If your soil is very mild (lacking high mineralization), then the concentrics should work fine. If your soil conditions change every few feet like mine, I think you'll find the "widescan" type to be more fun. Remember that dd/widescan sees a bit less ground and less mineralization than concentrics do. The 11x8 is supposed to be a "hotter" coil, from what I've read. While I have both the 9x8 concentric and the 11x8 widescan, I haven't compared them both in use. I do notice that the 11x8 is lighter though. My Tejon always wears the 11x8 and my Vaquero always has a 5.75 widescan (great in trash). Whatever you choose, a Tesoro will get it done nicely. Good luck! ^_^

A few months back i bought a new Trident Extreme which is basically a hybrid of a Vaquero and a Tejon, this is tweaked to have the Tejon power but in a lightweight package of the Vaquero, mine came with the 11x8 WS coil on and its a joy weigh wise to swing, but something is holding me back from using it as one of my main detectors, gut feeling tells me it could be the coil, nothing wrong with the coil but i am starting to think this could be the weak link in the detector/coil combination,i dont personally like the way it pinpoints using the 11'' coil.

So basically i have a brand new machine sitting here without any faults but what i am finding than when i go out detecting i grab one of my other machines instead, may try another coil on it like say a 8.5 WS or even a Concentric, but a machine just sitting here is not a good situation to be with, another coil may totally transform it into my No1 machine but time will tell with that one.

Although i do own 3 other Tesoro machines they never really have grabbed me as being comfortable with and having confidence, but i thought this could possibly change with this new machine, alas my feelings are still the same and i cannot put my finger on the reason why,a new coil may change that one.We will see, cannot help specifically with your Tejon question though.

I had both sets tors and now only have the Tejon. I like the dual disc and the ability to change the tone. I also feel it was deeper than the Vaquero, maybe due to the 8 as. The V is a good detector, but for me the Tejon all the way. It's amazing how handy the dual disc is when you get used to it and I like to adjust my own tone

If you have bad mineral ground you need wide scan coils like the 11x8. Concentric doesn't work as well in minerals. My ground is mild so I use concentrics.

We guys my plans didn't work out, I had a little issue with money and I had to settle for a used Tejon with the 9x8 concentric. I would like to have went new this go around but it looks like I will have a used one on the way.

Used one is better than no one lol.
And you can always have it sent in for the $50 to ensure its at its peak operating abilities.
I'm sure it's fine.
I worry a bit more with non-gb machines.
Congrats!!

Tracking is showing my new to me Tejon will be here later today.

Got it today, wasn't able to hunt it but I took it out in the yard and seemed to respond pretty good on a dropped quarter.
