Talked to Whites about the MX5 ...

the repair isn't difficult. I am going to take my MX5 in and they can fix it while I wait. I gave some MX5's as gifts, checking them first, and I didn't hear the tone problem that I have with my own very early-issue MX5.

As for the California Distributor, well .... it depends on the individual you spoke with I guess, but not all MX5's had the problem and it's only one small component that needs to be taken care of in those that do have the tone jump.

It is a little thing, got fixed, and production is fine. The important thing is that it is a simple, fixable thing and the MX5 doesn't suffer from a wide range of issues, but instead it provides excellent in-the-field performance. If it didn't, mine wouldn't ride along with my MXT All-Pro and modified IDX Pro. White's stands behind their products and service, which is why I have been a loyal White's fan since 1968.

White's should be as transparent as possible on this issue. IMO, they should publicly acknowledge the problem, identify it, along with serial numbers of effected units. Pull any effected units off the shelf for sale by dealers, send them back to the factory to be repaired, and give anyone that purchased a defective unit a longer warranty for this issue. I am sure this may be expensive, but its the right thing to do, and it would lay this issue to rest.

He will be straight with you. No BS.. If there was a serious problem with it he would say so.

White's: They still do business the old fashion way. That why their the top metal detector company. 20 years ago they took care of me, and their way of business hasn't changed.

Sounds more like a "bleeding edge" issue.
If it seems to only effect the earliest units, and random ones at that,. It was probably an assembly issue that needed to be resolved.
I'm hoping to get a hold of one to see if it will "play nice" in the parks near me. And I'd like to see how well a 5.3 , 4x6 or the 6x10 will work with it.

I like that it does have threshold and volume control.
Just wish that a "ground grab" was also in the package.

me out the door in a hurry once the little glitch if fixed in my MX5 because it is just a good ol' 'fun' detector to use. I am sure I can still make it through this cold holiday season weather with mine the way it is because it works. I checked three newer models in inventory and they didn't display any problems, just my very early release MX5. It's not like the detector just totally craps out and leaves me empty-handed, it just occasionally shows off it's quirky audio tone behavior and quickly get it back in line with a quick shut-down and re-start and I'm back to detecting.

I'm not sure what you mean by "bleeding edge" issue, but I do know it is a very simple fix.

Many detectors (most maybe) can go through a few 'revisions' based upon what the manufacturer might find fitting based upon the circuitry design in general, and sometimes how a simple component can result in an otherwise unexpected problem. In our wonderful world of digital electronics simple things can cause a problem, and the a simple fix can take care of it.

My MX5 is 'playing nicely' most anywhere I take it. I am not a big fan of DD coil designs and their field performance, but I do spend a lot of hunting time wit the excellent 5.3 Eclipse coil on my MX5. I've found that 6

The "bleeding edge" is a reference to being an early adopter. It's a twist on the "leading edge" phrase.
In some technologies, products get shoved out to the public without a thourough quality check.
The early customer pays for the privilage to be the one to find the bugs. And then the disgrunted comments and rumors begin to take life on the internet.

I'm not saying Whites doesn't have a good QC program. Just a certain issue managed to slip through.
I'm glad it was found quickly and is an easy repair.

On the "ground grab" comment. I should have been more clear.
I would like it more if it did have a way to lock the ground balance. But its not a deal breaker for me.
I was looking at the MX5 as to be a good C&J machine, that could be pressed into nugget hunting.
Threshold control , a good search frequency, fast tracking. The only thing missing to me was a locking GB.

So I suppose I WAS hoping for a stripped down MXT.
I'm glad to hear that the 5.3 works well with the MX5. Seem like the little coils would be a good and balanced match.
