Talk me into this Vaquero

No wonder you was having trouble balancing it. LOL. I was once detecting on a dead battery.
did you find much:rofl:

I have a high tone model Vaquero and when hunting around old home site out in the woods, this is my detector of choice.
I can tell iron from say silver, brass, copper, or lead by the type of sound the target gives off.
It is usually very snappy compared to other metals which give a much smoother sound.
A good set of headphones alos helps while listening to the target response.
I don't even thumb the disc. I set it at one spot (usually just below nickel) and leave it there... no problems from iron with me.

I also use headphones 100% of the time...always have.
I have no idea how any of this stuff would sound or even if I could tell the difference without them.

I don't have all that much trouble with iron.
Most of the high tone stuff sounds funny and breaks up when you turn the knob to max disc.
Nope, not much to complain about avoiding iron from this guy.
I'm not the only one who wasn't pleased on the V's performance in trashy iron sites. If I turn disc up to the quarter spot and get a solid repeatable signal, it should not be a a rusty iron bolt that isn't even round like a quarter. Now I never need to turn a knob to see what the target ID's at. I run all metal and can notch out specific segments/tones and STILL have multi tones AND see the notches/numbers that I notched out as I swing over them. I dig less than half the amount of rusty iron (& trash in general) than I did with my Vaq. So for anyone who lives near me (SoCal) I highly recommend the Vaquero!

I'm a little slow Atom, took me a minute to get that last sentence....LOL. I'm with you on the TID. It's just another helpful tool. Hell, put an analog meter for all I care, it would still be a helpful tool.

Now that you found how to put it in all metal that is where you have to ground balance from, atleast on my detectors. I would like to hear how you made out, good or bad whatever lets hear it.

Well, actually, I traded it for an Outlaw and am very happy with it.

Good to hear! I'm glad you are pleased with the Outlaw, my only experience is with the Vaq and Compadre (loved the Compadre)! HH
