T2 Upgrade Information

[quote Paul (Ca)]I wonder if we can purpose the chip ourselves and convert our T-2 back to stock if so some reason we decide to change back to the stock version.

It would be nice to have a switch on the unit to toggle back and forth between the two.

I have remained silent on the T-2 although I am very interested in a T-2 but don't own one yet. Their are already so many self anointed experts that I just did not want to add to the list and clutter. My is it not interesting how we are the blackest crow in the flock?

However, I agree with you 100% and BH. Rejecting bottle caps is not a design issue but user preference. If I had purchased a T-2 I would not have it upgraded due to the loss of sensitivity to targets that fall in this area. My concern has been that user demand will get the T-2 throttled down to a so so detector that is not worth the bother. I hope BH can work this so bottle cap rejection or acceptance is included in the upgrade at the desigred tone. I have yet to see a detector that had bottle cap rejection that did not have a loss of sensitivity that cost more than it was worth in good targets not detected. The most basic test in the filed will demonstrate the more we kill bottle caps and screw caps the less sensitivity we have to other targets that are desirable that hit in these notches. This is most likely going to be a firmware type of notch discrimination and that can be tricky. My thinking was the guys that are not caught up with this should hang on to their T-2 that does not have the upgrade as they will be in demand like some of the other detectors that worked great right right out of the shoot.

I will predict that the T-2 platform is going to be a long standing one that is right in there with the DFX, Explorer, Sovereign, CZ, series. Once these solid design platforms are established it is a matter of functionality changes since we are dealing with the same basic method of detection and platform.

The frequency shift is also not a detection depth or discrimination issue. Those slight frequency shifts are not going to make a whit of a difference in these areas. It simply involves more than one T-2 working near another one without interference.

Since both of these question are basic technical issues I have been tempted to post several times but unless I own and use or have owned and used a particular model will normally refrain from comments.

As a matter of fact I consider that the T-2 is designed so it can be upgraded with a new chip is a very desirable feature in my opinion. I have wondered for years why this great design feature is not available so a $50 can be accomplished instead of you got to by a complete new machine just to get a firmware improvement.

Well done Bounty Hunter. It looks like you have really put together a good platform and what looks like a great detector. Now give us an 8" coil or smaller as soon as you can get around to it.

DaveZ, you know I love a DFX but Whites needs to follow the lead on this as does Minelab. Both these detector could be very much more in demand if a few firmware upgrades had been issued over the last couple of years.

However, like most it will be a new version that will require the user to purchase a whole new machine. I commend BH for responding to customer demand with a firmware upgrade for only $50 even if I would not bother with the change.

I understand the value of sticking with a solid platform but including in that design platform firmware upgrades at a reasonable cost is a real plus.

I do not own a T2 either, but I agree completely with everything you said. Thanks for stepping in with some good no nonsense comments!

R5 for the relic guys and R6 for those that need it.

You make some good points. I do have a T2 and I'm currently mulling over this issue. I think it all depends on the actual results of the upgrade. That is, if the change will negatively impact the machines good points, etc. I am currently waiting to see what others have to say after having it done.

One thing though: you might change your mind after using a T2 yourself for awhile. The bottle cap thing can be a real pain!

Ideally, I think it would be great if we could toggle between the two modes depending on the site.

I think some guys might get a little upset having paid $800 and another $50 (plus shipping) for the upgrade, while the guys who buy the newer ones get the upgrade for free.I think they should have done what they did with the X5's and do the upgrades at no cost.As far as the DFX goes, mine works fine.Just found a worn flat copper today at 10-12" with the stock coil.I would only pay for an upgrade to the dfx if it meant getting an extra inch or two in depth.Dave

Very well stated as an owner of a T2 and DFX I also agree with you The T2 has everything that I was looking for

Maybe they should offer the upgrade at no/reduced cost to their most recent customers.

In any case, it's good to see progress even though placing Nickels in the medium tone range only benefits beach hunters.

Cody,

I am glad to hear your opinion on this forum. I totally agree with you. I will not be send in my T2 for any upgrades. I like it just the way it is. Three things initially got me interested in the T2. The designers have very good reputations and have worked on some very noteable machines. The other is audio and visual ID work independant of each other. As you know from the Explorer classroom I love machines where audio can be used to hunt. :) It's also sensitive enough for small gold jewelry which my other machines don't excel in. Have you talked to Ralph about the T2? Even with the 11 inch coil I think it has very good seperation although a smaller coil would be a welcome addition. IMHO, it's also excellent in iron and is easy to use in iron which a both big pluses along with quick reset in the areas I hunt. Every machines has their quirks and the T2 is no exception. The first 25 hours I put on the T2 I frankly wasn't impressed. But, as I've learned the machine in different areas and got more hours under my belt my opinion has done a 180 degree turn.
