Surf PI Pro Dual Field - A Leap Forward or just a gimmick?

I've had the DFPI for about 2 - 3 weeks now and have hunted with it about 1/2 dozen times. It offers the best of the "Surf PI" series by combining the PI Pro and the PI Plus. The gain control allows you to really crank up the sensitivity. The pulse delay allows you some adjustment to not dig hair pins. The 12" coil allows you to cover more ground, get better depth and the design of the coil gives you better pinpointing. I would have to say if you are Surfmaster fan you will be more than satisfied with this machine. Don't get me wrong, if you want a discriminating water proof detector that gets great depth then the Excal is it. However, if you want all out power and depth while maintaining stability, this machine delivers.

They've got me wanting one too and I havn't even taken my Excal. II out of the box yet!!

Not only will it help with slipping, but I would think it would help preserve the wood too. I am gonna get some for mine when I get to the beach.

Keep at it and keep us up to date on how you are making out with the unit. I may end up getting one too if you say it pin points very well and the swing speed can be moderate to fast.

JC This machine pinpionts very good but I don't have the experience to compare it to another. Its the inner coil that pinpoints and I don't miss most times. The problem I am having is the depth in the water. Not that its a bad thing to detect deep but some targets are to deep and without a backhoe :yikes: the holes fill in before I can get to the target. If you ever hunted in the surf I am sure you can relate to this, I just don't get much time before the sand fills the hole after the first scoop.Like I said earlier this PI goes deep even in the water. Swinging the coil is definitely moderate to fast and I have read that the older PI machine needed a slower swing. To be honest I wouldn't even know the difference because I use it at the same pace as my first and haven't had any problem finding targets. Horsesoldier sounds like he has mastered this machine by knowing how to tweak the adjustments, thanks for that information. Now I got myself all excited about this and cant wait to get out there again. Its great to be able to share information with others who know what conditions we hunt in with the black sand and scrap iron. Now Sunday cant come fast enough when I will take my detector for a run at the beach.

Hello Horsesoldier; Since you are one of the few people who are using the Dual Field PI can you give me some advise. Are you using a coil cover? My first time out I didn't have a cover for it and used it as is. Ordered the coil cover and put it on with RV Silicone. After using it the last two times I noticed I missed a spot and water was draining out. Took the cover off which was a real P.I.T.A.and noticed a tiny bit of really fine sand. It seems that if I put the cover back on without the silicone a lot of sand would get in there. Because of the web design of the coil it is a tedious job to silicone the cover on. What are you using? I might just use it without the cover for awhile.

For what you spent on the coil cover you could have purchased two tubes of Marine opoxy. I will post some pix of the coil if you like. Done properly it makes for a nice appearance and gets rid of having the problems you described.

The first thing you need to do is open unit and turn the volume pot wide open. This will help you hear the deep targets. Then take some tape and cover the weep hole at the top of the headphones to eliminate wind noise. This will get rid of that "hollow" sound.

I have found the following settings work best for me: Gain at 2:00 - 3:00 (more if you can get it without false signals), Delay at Preset, T-hold at 10:00 (don't worry about the "wobble" in the threshold, that's normal). As long as you are not getting false signals you are fine. If you want to have some discrimination you can turn the time delay colockwise from preset to eliminate bobby pins. I would recommend that you use one to set this control so that you can hear the difference. Please take caution that in doing so you will take the chance on eliminating small gold.

BEWARE! You will need a bigger scoop!

These are just some suggestions and is what works for me. Experiment with the setting and have fun!

I found that wrapping the handle with electrical tape will take care of that problem. I use "Surfmaster Yellow" for visability hahahaha!
