Surf PI Pro Dual Field - A Leap Forward or just a gimmick?

I've been planning on adding a PI machine to my arsenal for the past year now but nothing has made me think there is a PI machine that will significantly outperform my Excal. The new Surf PI Pro Dual Field may just be the machine I've been waiting for as the TDI by Whites looks like it is going to stay a pure land machine only.
My question is this: Is the Dual Field a serious leap forward in PI technology or just a gimmick to revamp an old Surf PI Pro machine?

Any and All Thoughts Appreciated.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

I've been told by sources that the small inner coil is great on small gold and the outer bigger coil is for more depth.. I'm buying one for the pulse delay, the old Whites PI's used to have it and for some reason they stopped making it that way with the PI PRO... saying that I have found a large amount of rings with my PI so it doesn't look like it hurt me any ;)

I would wait for TDI by Whites... land machine but can be waterproofed easily.
Ground Balancing Detector
Full Range Ground Balance Control
Adjustable Pulse Delay and the 3-way conductivity Toggle
Adjustable Pulse Delay Control
Frequency Control Toggle allows you to ONLY HEAR Low Conductive targets like most gold nuggets OR ONLY HEAR High Conductive targets like Silver coins or Large Relics. Since desireable targets are not the only metal objects in the ground, you will still hear the trash. HOWEVER, by being able to separate the sounds of High of Low Conductive metals, you will be better able to identify trash targets as well.

If the land TDI is $1595.00 what will the water version be? I would never take a land machine that costs that much and subject it to possible damage or worse frying it in the water...

with regard to a TDI in a waterproof configuration. There may never be. As it is, the TDI models that are showing up now are still not necessarily the final revisions.

PI machine's main advantage is that it can go deep in very poor ground conditions, (black sand) where the VLF water machines choke. For me to stay insane using a PI I can use it only in low trash areas. I don't know your ground conditions, but if your Excal is running stable and deep, I would stay with that setup.

I Hunt the Southern California Beach's and the Black sand is real bad here. some beach's it gives my PI a challenge.

As I'm typing, the UPS man just delivered my new PI Duel field, I will play with it this weekend. The main advantage of the new D-F PI is it's new coil design

I've been told that heat build up is a stumbling block for converting the TDI to underwater use. Except for that I'd buy one and stick it in a waterproof box. It looks like it may be a good long while before the TDI goes sub-aqua. Too bad because I think it would make a kick @ss unit. I just have to wonder if that 12" coil is going to make that big of a difference. I don't like the fact that the coil doesn't have negative bouyancy and I'm not paying that kind of $$'s only to have to tie a sock full of sand to my coil.

Thanks Guys,

I have thought about buying that unit till i saw neutral bouy, even though i just got my pi pro.. having the diver coil.. i don't think i would want a floater.. just my 2 cents worth.

I'm really interested in getting your feedback on this 'new' unit. The mineralization is virtually nonexistent in Bermuda so I am fortunate to be able to run my Excal maxxed out. I regularly dig targets 16" and deeper as a result so I don't know if a PI is going to be a benefit to me.

The Infinium LS will out work the Excal.I have an excal 1000,I have an Infinium LS . My infinium LS is now my #1 detector.infimium go"s deeper

The Infinium is good as long as you dig everything. But, if get into a trashy area with targets that are close together, you'll be crying, trying to figure out if you just got a high-low-high signal or a low-high-low signal.

Had one but sold the machine before I got a chance to use it.

Hello, I have not been into the hobby for almost twenty years. My first detector was an inexpensive one and at a small lake beach I found alot of coins and two gold rings along with a handfull of pull tabs and other trash items. Well I recently decided to get back into the hobby. Since I live close to the New Jeresy beaches I decided to get a dedicated beach detector. After alot of reading in the forums I choose to buy the new Beachhunter I.D. 300. I called Kellyco about two weeks ago and placed my order. The package arrived a few days later. I opened it up and discovered it was a Surf P.I. Dual field. I called Kellyco and they were sorry about the mix up and sent a call tag out for UPS to pick it up. After thinking about this detector and not wanting to wait longer for another one to be sent I called Kellyco back the next morning. They were glad I decided to keep it and made it right with the price difference. That next Sunday morning I went out to the beach to try it out. I first tried it out in the wet sand and than in about knee to waist high water. This detector works great in and out of the water. I wanted to test it out on a beach area not used much so I could get to know the detector. Found a few fish hooks and lead weights and some trash medal. Also I wasn't prepared being my scoop was a fold up army shovel so some targets in the surf I wasn't able to dig up because they were deep. Then I tried it in the dry sand and it works great there too were I found a few coins. This detector goes deep and I hit on a few aluminium cans that must have been two feet down. I like to dig everything on the beach so this is not a problem. Pinpointing is very accurate I guess because of the small inner coil. One thing I did notice was in the wet sand it would sometimes false hit on the black sand patches. This can be fixed as stated in the owners manual with the adjustable pulse control although I didn't play with it. I have since bought a sunspot stealth scoop and I am ready to hit the beach in a more populated area. So yes this detector has meet my every expectation and is really easy to use, no complicated learning curve. Almost just turn it on and go. It does not discriminate but on the beach I like to dig all targets because you never know what is down there. In the wet sand and water that's a good thing. My experience is very limited so I cant compare the dual field to another one but to me it doesn't get much better than this. :clapping:

Where you live in N.J. you must not have any iron on your beaches. I was told that this machine won't work on heavily iron laden beaches. Good Luck with you new machine

Hello, I have had it out three times now and it works great. It goes right through the black sand. In the surf it hits deep because some targets I cant get to. I might be able to remove two scoops of sand before the waves fill in the hole. Another problem I am having is wire. On one beach area the surf is loaded with small pieces of rusted wire from the dune fencing. So this makes for alot of digging. This detector works really well if you dont mind digging up alot of trash. Maybe the older PI detectors didn't do good but this unit is working for me. On the dry sand is works really well also, again it finds alot of bottle caps and bobbie pins and such. So far no gold or jewelry but I know in time i will find some. The weather here hasn't been the greatest on the weekends and I contribute that to not finding much good stuff. Working in the surf is very hard as I have found out dealing with the waves and current and uneven sand to stand on but I love it. Finding the targets is easy.Trying to scoop them out is the hard part.

Symore...I am from NJ and I hear ya about the dune fencing. I have a PI, and on some beaches I hunt, I can't use it due to the bits of iron from the dune fencing. It is just too time consuming to dig 50 small pieces of dune fence before you find a coin or worse...pull tab.

I have come to realize that to use a PI on most Jersey beaches, you have to be in the water. The wet sand on a lot of the beaches is full of small bits of iron from the fencing.

Then again, if you are familiar with Avon, sometimes the black sand is so bad, you need a PI with a freq control. But, there is so much iron in some spots, the PI will drive you nuts. Even my Excal nulls out so much, I can't use it in some spots.

Believe it or not, some of my most productive days on that beach were with my Detector Pro Wader.

Glad to see you like the Dual Field...and that you got a Sun Spot scoop...nice and WIDE. I have one too, and the reason was, I can not pin point very accurately with my 11 inch coil on my PI, so I got one due to the width of it.

Keep at it...the gold will come.

JC

Hello JC; The one beach I was on there was alot of fence wire in the water for some reason. The dry sand was not so bad, it surprised me how all that wire ended up in the surf. As for the black sand it only sometimes false hits in the wet sand where it is in patches. The pulse adjustment should cure that but I have yet to use it and just leave it on the recommended setting. You are right about the scoop it is wide and is built like a tank. One thing I noticed is when my hands are wet I cant get a grip and they slip on the wooden handle. I am going to try some surfers wax on the handle to make it grip better..
