Sunray X1 Probe pics?

Does anyone have any pics of their Explorer SE with a Sunray X1 Probe attached? (in various states of attaching) I'm curious about how the existing wire (the is in the shaft) is routed. How is it connected to your MD? It appears that the standard setup requires you to run the connecting wire outside of the shaft. Is this correct? If so, has anyone created a mod that would allow you to keep the main cord inside the shaft? I realize one might have to create a mod for each different coil you have.

I guess it comes down to vanity? I'm interested if I can figure out a way to basically have the box, and the probe wire and probe on the outside, everything else on the inside. Is that wishful thinking?

Does the uniprobe connect to the SE? I'm interested in the X1 because I thought I reads just like the SE.

If you were to disconnect from the Detector, you could use it as a mini detector. You can even get a rod and coil for it verses the probe that you see in my pic. It can be used with any Detector.

To my knowledge, there is not a mod to allow the coil wire to remain inside the shaft. Once you put the SunRay probe on the machine you will soon forget about having to run the coil wire on the outside. You will wonder how you ever got along without it. I have had one for years and absolutely love it. I use the DetectorPro UniProbe on my detectors that SunRay does not make a probe for. It is a great set up but will not give you the info the X-1 will provide.

Don't let the coil wire keep you from getting one of the best accessories you can get for the Explorer.

I thought I found a pic googling yesterday where someone bore an oval shaped hole in their upper shaft just below the X-1 switch box. This allowed them to bring the cord through the lower and upper shaft and out just where it plugs into the switch box. Does that make sense to those who have one?

Well I emailed Sunray yesterday, and to maintain the 12 month warranty they offer, they do not sell the pinpoint kit "not" installed on the upper shaft. I suppose since I'll end up having an extra upper shaft I can play around with that. They, along with others I have talked to about boring a hole were concerned about the integrity of the shaft. First things first, I need to go eBay some stuff and clear up some funds for the purchase. If the coils on the outside really start getting to me, then I'll play around with it. Thanks all for your feedback.

If you can get an oblong hole big enough to get the cable end through comfortably it would take up most of the width of the shaft. Then if you want to change coils even with an extra lower rod. You are going to struggle to get it threaded through again. Not to mention the friction wearing the cable cover and shorting out.

Here you go. I obviously haven't cleaned it in a while. (I go out in everything but pouring rain. (With parts wrapped in plastic as appropriate.)) I have no problems at all with attaching it on the outside. I ran some velcro strapping on each on of my lower rods to hold the wire on where I want it (with some looseness to keep stress pressure off the cord) and the wrapped cord stays pretty much where I put it when I stuff the coiled part of the cord back down the tube for storage in the Jeep. (Also added velcro on the lower end of the upper rod and on the arm strap so I can keep it out of the way when I'm not using it--which is most of the time (and I also run the headphone cord back through the loop created by the arm strap and the body of the battery case). All I have to do to swap coils is flip the (great!) camlock, wrap the coiled part around the upper rod a few times, plug in, tighten the knurl, and go. While carbon fibre is pretty strong--and the wire-in-rod original design is nice and clean--I'd say it's a no-sweat choice to just wrap the coil wire on the outside. I don't think it's wishful thinking but I don't think it's worth the effort, will take more time to change coils, and *may* be a risk for upper rod durability.

No I have never used the X-1 But I believe the difference is the X-1 gives you the same reading through your explorer as the explorer gives.
The Uniprobe gives a mono tone. All metals sound the same. Distance to target is about the same and the Uniprobe headset can be used on any of your machines or as its own unit. If I want speed and coverage I plug it into my Shadow X5. The beauty of it is it's versatility.

Thanks for the pic and feedback BlackX. I notice that your pinpointer is black? All of the pics I've see have the probe part being white. I don't recall a color preference at any of the sites that offer an X-1 for sale. Did you purchase it recently? I'm wondering what color mine would be. I'd prefer black to match my detector.

YW. I bought it new in January(?). I didn't specify but was quite happy to see it was black to match the SE. (My Sov probe is white.) Came with white zip ties but, being an aesthetic kind of guy also--actually an artist--it didn't take long to get black zip ties for it when I readjusted the probe mount slightly (moved it as far back as I could for balance (one zip tie is partly under the cuff mount if I remember correctly) and to readjust where the ends went so the sharp points weren't sticking out like I'd first done it). The part of the probe mount that the zip ties attach too are white--might end up spray painting them black with the new spray paint that works on plastic.
