SunRay Probe vs. Garrett ProPointer

Aaron

Well-known member
I have been using the Propointer w/ my V3 and I really like it. The only thing I dont like is the big interference I get in my headphones once I turn it on and its pretty irritating. I have been thinking of getting a Sun Ray probe, I have one on my CZ-70 and was never really impressed with it as it doesnt get much more than a inch depth on a coin size object. I have noticed that Rob is using the Sun Ray, what kind of depth are you getting and advantages?
Thanks Aaron

If you mean this Rob I would say 4" is no problem on a coin. Since you are using the detector and the DX1 is really a 1" coil the depth of the probe depends on your all metal setting. I like using the probe in pinpoint mode. Rob

You should be able to get much more than 1 inch. I get about four inches in my ground with both the V3 and my old DFX was even better yet. I had the DFX maxed out most of the time though and can't do that with the V. Your settings, Gain and sensitivity will determine the depth of the DX-1, especially the All Metal settings when the trigger is squeezed.

I have been using the Garrett pro-pointer for almost a year now and really like it. I just got my V3 a few weeks ago and still working through a good work flow using the pro pointer with it. I do have to set the V3 in the right place to keep the pro-pointer from lighting up my ears. But no real issue as long as I am mindful of this. I have this week relented and purchased a DX-1 having been convinced in this forum that it is a better more efficient combination. I like the Idea of hearing the pointer feed back in my wireless HPs. Also, locking the V3 quickly in the all metal mode (trigger pulled back) and having the screen info is going to be helpful I think. I was initially reluctant of the DX-1, thinking that putting something in line with the recv circuit might have some negative effect on the V3's outstanding performance. But the folks on this forum seem to be more than attentive to V3 performance issues and heap praise on the use of the DX-1. So am assuming it does not compromise performance in any way. White has recently tested the DX-1 with the V3 and says they are compatible with a few caveats. Will see...

I have used a Garrett pro pinpointer the past year and love it.I think my old DX1 might have been a lemon 4 it never did work like others say there's did.I tryed and used it for over 3 yrs. Then again the thing was a bother flipping the toggle and forgetting to shut it off .The good point with the DX1 I miss is the on screen readings .The GPP is great as long as you move the search coil away , has good depth and needs to be turned on touching the ground 4 best results. Big thumbs up on the GPP. Yazoo

Hi Aaron:

Regarding your feedback problem, I switched channels on my headphones and don't have this problem anymore. I have found that the strength of the pointer goes well before the battery goes. I keep my pinpointer battery extra fresh so that I get max distance out of the pointer. It saves time on recovery of targets which means more targets eventually, maybe keeping a freshie in there will pay for itself?

That being said, one of the dealers on here PMed me and when I get some extra money I may try a sunray probe. It will save the expense of batteries and should make for less ground damage and faster recoveries, as it is stronger.

Really? Thats good info. I only get interferance from my pro-pointer in borderline EMI areas and have gotten into the habit of hitting the menu button to silence the detector when recovering a target. It would be great if it's as simple as changing channels. I'll try that soon.

Pro-pointer vs. SunRay probe is going to be a personal choice. Personally I don't think there is enough advantage in a SunRay to justify the added weight (and yes I've owned one) and there are plenty of disadvantages. Weight, hanging cords and leaving the switch flipped to name a few.

I love my Pro pointer, Wont hunt without it, Garrett did there Homework on this one, Yes at times ( not all the time) it Causes interference with the V3, I simply push the Menu Button and it Stops, Then when I'm ready to hunt I simply pull the trigger and off looking for my next Diamond Ring.

Thats a great idea, cant believe I didnt think of that!
Thanks, Aaron
