This is old news to many Im sure but to
guys like me and totally new tectors
this may help...It did for me

Learn as soon as possible how to dig the
Neatest hole you can at any resonable depth ...

I used to limit myself to about 3-4 inches in
busy public areas... sometimes even less
Now that I can look behind me and see
nothing sloppy. I dig deeper and so I
naturally find more coins... I used to pass up the 6
inch targets cause I didnt want to mess up the area ...

Just a small tip that may help

It's all part of the learning curve. Good digging etiquette is a must! You are going to be a great hunter....I put money on you.

Consider a restaurant style cloth napkin and the slit method of extraction. Dirt that comes out of the hole goes on the napkin so you can pour it neatly back in after you're done.
Ive tried many different dirt catchers over the years, but noting really beats a restaurant napkin. They're tough, supple and they last.
The slit method is just cutting "X" slits in the turf above the target and working down through those - instead of cutting plugs or removing turf. It is time consumin' and can be exasperating going through the work only to find trash, but it but leaves a no-see-um hole.

Hey Ron,
you are not the only one that's new at it.I have approximately 30 hrs under my belt.
Been in my back yard for about 4 hrs worth of digging. I have perfected my slits and plugs well enough to go out there in the parks.
Currently using pro pointer to target in close on the shallower ones. Then using a steel probe with a brass tip to locate. Cutting slits and digging to a depth of approximately 3 to 4 inches....(that's as deep as the pro pointer will pick up) with a coin popper. Using a hand towel to put the dirt on if I have to cut a plug. Using a Gater digger.

I have become quite comfortable out there in the parks you cannot tell I have been there. Currently working a sledding hill near me....Have been pulling a bunch of clad off the hill. Most coins have been running in the 2 to 3 inches down. Had my first audience day before yesterday four kids watching.....Felt kinda funny wait till you feel that experience. I just kept on digging.....

Regards

Scott

About 2 months ago, I dug a monumental hole using my Super Shovel. It was about a foot deep, and a foot wide. The local park employee who picks up the trash barrel contents as me what I was looking for? He said something about China, but otherwise didn't comment. Well, that hole brought up a 70 year old token! It pays to dig!

I hear ya guys ....Ive had a few yungins ask what i was up to
and explained breifly..then back to :detecting: but no digging
while they were still around i HATED letting belltones go ...

Im more confident digging deeper now so I can find a
lot more coins and stuff that i used to pass up...and
the propointer is GREAT

i put any dirt that HAS to come out on a plastic
dust pan so I can scan it with the ppointer ..
then back into the hole it goes...the plug goes
back and VIOLIN.. Im done ...
Well just spme ramblings from an adddict to :detecting:

bought a set of (chopping blocks) actually a 2 pieces of flexible plastic mat marketed as chopping block at the flea market for a dollar. works great. going back to buy a couple more sets for my brother and brother in law so they can use instead of their usual fiber napkins that they use. need to find a plastic clip so I can clip it to the tector as the metal one gives pinpointer a false reading when it gets too close
