Suggestion for Minelab

I have a suggestion for Minelab. I would think it obvious, but why don't they combine the digital dual readout numbers witht the crosshair screen? I would think they could find the room on the screen. IF the digital mode is no different in terms of operation, but rather simply a display, it would surely be handy to be able to reference those numbers while looking at the crosshairs.

I cannot believe no one has thought of this, so that begs the question, why? The only possible answers I come up with, is that there is either:
1. No space to put the numbers
2. It would slow the processor down too much, delaying the display.
3. It is a different operating mode.

While I am at it, Minelab, you need to provide an import function, so that we can exchange "programs" at the user level.

OK, now everyone jump on the bandwagon, and tell me what is wrong with both comments.....:starwars:

kuletule that is a fine idea!

But more than anything what I what is a more visible display!

I constantly find myself twisting and turning to be able to read the information regardless of the contrast setting.
Come on Minelab, next Explorer how about you put a better quality LCD screen in that flagship!

While your at it color would be nice!

Cheers!

Drew.

...allow me to press a button to scroll backwards and see the last 5 displays. Now I can see what I missed while the display was catching up after the null...

Good idea- A dual display with digital numbers and cross hairs both on at the same time surely would be a usefull thing to have. I guess it wouldnt be too big a problem for minelab to sort out. Personally i dont think minelab are going to be able to make a detector better than the explorer 2 , its gonna take some beating for sure. The discriminating circuits in this detector are superb. The only things i dont like about my explorer 2 are as follows :- 1, its bottom heavey with the standard coil. 2 it flattens batteries way too quick - real thirsty for power. 3 , It needs putting into a metal shell instead of plastic. 4 Its too expensive for what it is. Apart from these few niggles its a superb machine.

how many of you dig only certain numbers in digital or only when the cross hairs are in certain places? How often do people suggest digging everything and how often do you guys do it? I probably never take mine out of digital mode and the numbers are usually spot on but to tell you the truth, I dig just about every signal. So I guess my point is that the displays, nice though they are, could probably prevent someone from making great finds if they get too locked in to them. Frankly I think the Explorers would be top of the line if they had no displays at all. I hunt the beach with machines that have no displays and I think that doing this really gets you tuned in to sound and sound will probably tell you much more than the display. Just my opinion and I won't feel offended if some of you are calling me names now, lol. Have a good one.

You have a very good suggestion. If they were build one with a larger screen mounted on a straight shaft, with the electronics and batteries in a rectangular hip mounted package that would be GREAT. Of course the option to remove the screen and waterproof the hip mount would be nice. I am not even going to tell Minelab what I would give for that machine. HH John R

We don't wear watches for obvious reasons so how hard would it be to put a little clock in the corner of the screen so we don't get in trouble with the wives?

How about instead of using the discrimination mode you can be at iron mask 16 or have the it(wide open) in the quickstart mode but have a selection of droping out all the low ,medium tones if you want and only listening to the high tones without any loss of depth .so I can go into a old park with a lot of trash and slowly work my way through trash picking out the high tone sounds of silver coins in this range and not be flooded out by all the low, medium sounds in the ground kinda like cherry picking through the trash but not losing any depth that you would if you were using the discrimination mode. Also update the sound card for the best sounds mixes you can get,for that sweet sound of silver and otheir coins.

I sent an e-mail to Minelab recently to ask about an Explorer III, and to mention a couple of suggestions. They e-mailed me back promptly and asked that I answer a few questions for them, to provide some feedback. they wanted suggestions etc on what to improve, and they mentioned all suggestions/recommendations are forwarded to their research lab.

SOOOO...that being said, if you do have suggestions, you should e-mail them in. Many people have complaints and suggestions but don't act on them, expecting others too. The only way to make some changes is for everyone to get on board.

Lets be reasonable obviously...but I think at the very least most of us would like to see something lighter, and constructed a lot more solidly!
Those were my big complaints.

I agree the digital numbers and smart screen would be nice on the same screen. However, I rarely use either anyhow.

OR update the icons to make them more understandable, for example, a circle with a "$" really doesn't mean much, now if they offered a accurate icon for, lets say, US coins (i.e. Icons like the ones found in other brand detectors that show a dollar sign for where the cursor goes, etc.), and offer the screen along with the digital display or another display you can choose I'm pretty sure they will sell more units for people wanting an easier understanding of the display, plus the Explorers ability to be dead accurate most of the time, it would be an instant success! Well the Explorer is already a success though...

Well ground balance is my big complaint. I think we need a way to read how the groundbalance is set on the screen as well as a way to fix it so it does not change once it is set properly. If it gets out of wack we need to know it so we can go rebalance and also when hunting a trashy area it gets out of wack so often I lose most of my depth.

I do not think the auto ground balance works very well on any of the manufacturers machines I have used. This is the adjustment that maximizes depth the most.

Another option would be a button or option to select that maximizes depth. The further you turn it the deeper the detector goes and the more false positives you have to deal with. There is a way to put all the different adjustments into a single dial or equation so that depth increase across the board.

A sticky pinned at the head of the forum for a poll of all the Explorer users who post here.

Just have everyone list the three areas they would like to have Minelab address or add in these fine machines for incorporation in the next version.

You can edit the results down to say 10 of the most popular suggestions and then email the poll result to Minelab for their consideration.

Couldn't hurt.

Drew.

the XTerra 50 so it could be used in highly mineralized soil for relic hunting and also put it on an XTerra shaft for durability and a reduction of weight.

these are all great suggestions i think. it would be nice if minelab could install some kind of device into the pinpoint switch that when we go into that mode a x-ray beam is activated and will be able to see on the screen what we are about to dig. what do you think of that idea. also some kind of induction fan where the coil would just hover above the ground so that we wouldn't have to actually hold the weight of the coil. just guide it. jmo
ikon lolol

How about improving the explorer semi automatic mode lets say its at semi-auto 25 but it is really in semi-auto 16 this detector does not diplay it at this time the true semi-auto reading .Instead of being locked in like semi 25 but its really in semi 16 which the minelab computer is diplaying for environmental conditions and will adjust actual detector sensitivity as close as possible to ground conditions with these explorers you just dont know where in semi automatic is at.After learning this I than could go to manual turn it up to 18 or 20 a little hotter than 16 semi.

That is one heck of an idea! Lets get this rolling. I'd be willing to tally the results and send the e-mail to Minelab if Guvner has too much on his plate to deal with this. However, I can't put the sticky up obviously, so he'd have to do that for us.

I really believe that with the amount of money we spend on these machines, we should certainly all have our voices heard when it comes to upgrades and what we want in a machine.

hey tony, a couple of years ago i found a small plastic clock about the size of a quarter and used double sided tape and stuck to the back of the explorer control box. i think i found it in some kind of kids store in the mall. still there and still works
