Stupid people on ebay

Ebay bought 25% of Craigslist from a couple of former employees. The owner of Craigslist seems not happy about that.

I guess Craigslist may have gone 25% to hell. At least we have 75% good there, maybe? Thanks for that info.

Ha! I'd better not put what I'm thinking down.....But I think those in question were actually IN Africa, in those scam-artist Internet Cafes. It's amazing how many ignorant people in OUR country fall for such scams.
It's free and it's local. I just sold a kayak and a treadmill, listed them under Central Jersey. Both buyers live within 25 miles of me. Can post pics and phone number too. The listing will disappear after 45 days or you can delist it when the item is sold. Again, it's FREE.
If listed in NEW YORK the listing is for 7 days only!

I bought my sons ACE 250 off Craigslist for $100. Perfect condition.

Don't forget that you can post a "WANTED ITEM" also.

HH

You would probably be better off selling your used detectors on this forum or other well established forum. In that way you will be selling to a select group of folks who ( most likely) will be honest about the purchase and not try to pull something on you. On ebay, you are dealing with millions of people and your chances of having some shady character turn up and attempt to defraud you are much higher.

Just my two cents.

In the old days, if you had a bunch of Beatle collectables you could get a nice price. The only way to get things was through collectable shows or antique stores. Now if you have what was once a hard to obtain item, there are thousands of them out there for sale!! Vinyl records, old tube radios; you name it, there are dozens for sale at any one time.

The only things that you can get any money for are old disposable items. Things like old phone books ( I got $70 for one), and a half a jar of old bb's ($12). If it was sold with limited edition on it, it is worthless!.

I agree Craigs list is one of the best ways to buy. I bought my Garrett Ace 250 from a local dude for $165. No fees, and I made a friend who I now detect with occasionally. But the best way is to ask around on the forums. I just recently mentioned that I was in the market for a DFX and immediatly got a response from a member who was looking to sell his DFX that he purchased last year. He caught the Minelab bug and has to sell the DFX to cover the cost. He was thinking of putting it on eBay, but realized he could sell it for less privately and make more on the deal. So he made more, and I paid less! I was even able to look at all of his posts from the last year. It was kind of like running a Metal Detecting background check. I wanted to see if he had any posts complaining about the DFX, but all I saw were posts that substantiated what he told me. He loves it but wants to try the Minelab Explorer. I got him to throw in the 12 inch coil. He assured me that everything is in perfect working order and provided photos. I may have even made another friend!

I heard from a law enforcement friend that EBay is one of the hottest sites to sell stolen cars/motorcycles and parts!!! Beware!! That being said I've bought and sold over the years and have had pretty good luck. Paypal sucks a bit for the fees but they at least provide some form of insurance.

If you say Local pickup that cant scam???????????? Right??????

I too sell on E-Bay and yes there are some Morons that grew up in caves obviously and cant read! So what I do now is when I auction an item and get a bid I check that persons feedback history, if they have had negative feedback recently from sellers I nicely let them know I have read their feedback history and am concerned about what I have read, I tell them that I would appreciate that they read the add carefully, agree with shipping charged, usually if they are reminded to do these things they usually will not bid again if they are looking for trouble, because they realize "you are watching!" And I make it a point to get Immediate payment with Buy it Now ( the E-Bay system will not allow them to buy it unless they pay for it immediately) and on regular auctions I state that payment must be made within 3 days or I will re-list and leave negative feedback. Also I only accept PayPal as payment, nothing else. If you are strict and let people know you don't mess around and wont allow yourself to get "screwed" generally the morons and idiots wont bother, they will move on to someone who seems like a push-over. Anyway even with these strict guidelines I have been very successful as a buyer and seller on E-Bay.

Back in '01, when I started doing ebay, it was a different world, and it looked like everyone was "normal". Now, it seems that there are more "lunatics", and my luck has recently seemed to put one on the other end of my transactions. I'll take your advice. Thanks again!
If you say Local pickup that cant scam???????????? Right??????
No, but they may murder you while they are there.......just kidding........

I think that detector dealers on eBay have to be watched. I mean many have great detector packages, but check out some of the accessory sales. I was going to bid on a treasure pouch, and they wanted $13 bucks to ship, give me a break. Too many dealers are trying to get around selling fees by charging high shipping rates. Ebay doesn't seem to care.

Dave in NJ
You're right. Ebay doesn't seem to give a crap about anything but money(theirs).

The best way to deal on Ebay is keep your guard up and don't get over confident. Most people get ripped off because they find a deal thats too good to be true and it usually is, and a fast transaction without checking the details. On this forum and Ebay I have bought and sold a lot of metal detectors and there is always one guy that tries to rip you off.Sooner or later you'll loose money on a bad deal, but usually the good buys and sells offset these.I ran out for a pizza the other day,and in the small strip mall was an Ebay Store. So while waiting I drop-ed in the Ebay shop and asked questions. The outside of the Ebay shop looked nice, but the inside had greasy auto parts and boxes of junk all over the place in no order.Anyway I asked the clerk what they would charge a customer who brought an item in to sale. They charge the customer 30 percent plus Ebay listing fees, what a deal. After leaving the shop they had a sign on the window they loan money.Bottom line a glorified pawn shop, these shops I think are the worst to deal with.

I think you've nailed it down. I miss the good old days, when you could go into a pawn shop, or antique shop, armed with a little knowlege about value, and come out with a bargain. Now, everybody checks their items against similar ebay items, and prices them accordingly. If they don't sell over the counter, they are put on ebay. Few good bargains to be had any more, and more crooks to deal with.

Thats a good point, good deals are hard to find everyone uses Ebay to see what the item is worth. But on the other hand as a buyer its nice to have Ebay to use as a benchmark for a price check.
