Stuff.... (a little long, not bad though )

Just try and have fun and keep your confidence level up. You will learn in time. That is what it takes. I promise if you do, there will be many "firsts" for you that you will be able to enjoy your lifetime and pass on to others. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
That Indian may not be a key date coin but it sure felt like one when you found it didn't it? That is what it is about. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Yep, I am a hot head! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D"> I ric'd the first seated quarter I ever found in front of Golddigger. I whipped the explorer through the air in disgust and snapped my armrest. Then I got even more mad and threw that sucker 10 or 15 feet. Took my ears with the headphones. Golddigger just laughed at me and shook his head. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D"> I have since broke that record by many feet, but that was the first throw for the medal. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
Anytime you are in the area or want to come to central IL, look me up!!!

Although I wouldn't recommend 0 IM, the dude has confidence in it and leaves his settings be and finds coins. Who am I to say he should open it up? I would never tell him to change if he is getting the results he wants and is happy. Using IM 0 is better than someone changing every setting every 5 minutes, IMO. That is what it takes. Easy enough for anyone to say "Use Iron Mask -10" or what ever. But you just have to find some settings you can handle and stick with them.
You da man Rick! I feel you and David are two of the most helpful dealers I have ever had the pleasure of corresponding with. It is obvious that you both love the hobby and want to help people more than making money. That is what this hobby needs. I have heard so many horror stories of people going into dealers wanting a cheaper model of any brand and talked into a top of the line detector over retail. I have seen you and David both recommend cheaper detectors to people asking about top of the line detectors based on your thoughts of what they need. That is the way it should be! Keep up the great work Rick!
Your pattern is top secret! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> At least I sure do not mind recommending a pattern as long as they get that upper left open. I don't ever mention it enough. Mainly I guess because I try to keep it simple for newbies to turn on and go. A pattern like you describe should be made and saved by a newbie so they can familiarize their self with the edit features. But if that is too advanced for some very new users I feel it is something they can do at a later date. Getting out and digging is what I think newbies should do. That puppy straight out of the box with fresh batteries will find more coins than most detectors tweaked. Just get swinging! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

I will agree with you on that but you have to agree that I know people like Keith who can tell you unbelieveable things with their analog units. The two units I didn't want to mention are Teknetics and Compass.I have not yet used Keiths Teknetics and buy no means pushing them or Compass but it is like you said just time spent with the unit.Just to give examples I knwo serveral people who can ID Nickels with their other units but just have fits finding nickels with the Explorer.
I am one that goes with the belief that theres always room for improvement one can't argue that the Explorer is complicted look at at the past post of confusion,I would like to see them put their efforts in making it more user friendly lighter build one for the masses and not the few.As with any unit you are on a constant learning curve, but if your like me I was never good at the card game where you lay the cards down and draw two trying to match them, whatever it is called thats the way I feel about the target id.I know for a fact that I have dug four dimes thus far that have read nowhere it was suppose to read, but since it was repeatable and they sounded deep but just an inch deep and when I pulled them went to Iron mask -13 nothing there no nulling out,so I don't know what gave but I did a battery reset just incase.
I would have to say that more are having trouble with the unit then there are those having fun with it.I don't bank to much on peoples finds look at me I took an 1996 Tesoro Toiltec II and lucked into a 1909 O mint Barber dime war nickel and a friend who never detected in his life found a 1964 Rosie with it.So I guess the sunshines on a dogs butt sometimes.I just want the Minelab people take what they read like your post very good one and those that are having trouble and see if they can't come up with something easier for the user.I watched the Professional Bass fishing organizations the old pros cry and belly ache that there was nothing wrong with the formats and just leave everything alone or like it is unless it was a benefit to them well someone else had a bigger vision for all to share in but of course this was to his benefit too,and that was to make him money but alot of good changes came from this once everyone agreed he was one to something. Now we have Payouts of up to $680,000 to the winner in just one tournment and the norm is $100,000 unheard of then.So I hope all can see the points I am trying to make this thing (Explorer) could be so much better, they just need to listen to proper input and not from Hoo Raa types.
Hey the sun is coming out and I think I will go swing my Big E and get a little muddy...lol..

you better save this info Ric cause you be real tired from trying to remember it all <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">, great post buddy and Im with you on the " hard to put into words " part..... I just wanna dig <IMG SRC="/forums/images/tongue.gif" BORDER=0 ALT,":p">.........HH Bri

to improve something that has been out three years and is still unequaled? The Older Compass and Teknetics are awesome, but sorry, they are no explorer.
Golddigger found like 90 some Shield nickels and way over 100 V nickels last year in parks they gave up on in the 80's. If someone can't find nickels with the explorer it is the user, not the detector.
As far as complicated, I just don't see it. Interpreting signals and the info is not programming. That is hard and takes time. The Explorer is easy to program, IMO. Compare the settings with an XLT or DFX. How could it possibly be more complicated to program? Complex it is, much more info to process than any other detector made, that becomes a plus when you learn it. And another thing about it being turn on and go. Over the years how many people have you seen with older detectors that they have had for years that still can't even ground balance it correctly? I have many. Talk about a depth killer!
Yes it is a heavy beast but there is a reason. The Minelab coils have circuit boards in them. They are a lot heavier than other coils that don't have them. Until the technology improves they will be coil heavy no matter how light a package they put them in. They are not for everyone, but what detector ever has been?
There are many improvements that can, and will, be made in the years to come. But right now I would not consider hunting with another detector. I sold my others to buy a second Explorer. There is no way I will ever consider <b>anything</b> about this detector a fault. I am waaaaay to pleased with it. If somone is picking out faults of the detector, IMO, there would only be one or two reasons. They are trying to blame their tools for the quality of their work or they have reasons for not liking the explorer. A person just has to keep and open mind and use it. The day will come. You have that MO. attitude and I admire that. But as longs as you have the thought of "faults" running around in your head you are not going to gain much confidence in it.
Quote, <i>"I would have to say that more are having trouble with the unit then there are those having fun with it."</i> Why do you have to say that? Where does this information come from? Because a forum set up to help new users post questions and they do get frustrated which is expected? Another one I just don't see. I bet I know at least 20 people around me that you could not pry the explorer out of their hands and none that are unhappy. The closest one was my Buddy Jack, Justin's Uncle. When he got the explorer he hated it soooo much. Cussed that thing up and down everytime he used it. About 400 silver coins later you couldn't pry it from his hands. And he is no newbie, he is a very accomplished hunter that has made finds I could only dream of. He could have went right back to his detector he used for years and had complete confidence in. But, the key is he stuck with it and never gave up even when he wanted to. He said he would never let any detector get the best of him and he learnt it and boy did he ever! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

It appears after re reading your post I pulled "faults" out of thin air. My bad! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":(">
Yes improvements could be made but it really is trivial after you learn it.
I have been on here waaaay longer than I should have been. I need to go digging or something. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">

Congrats On that IH <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

I like to add one thing that works for me. If I get an iffy hit that sounds good in more than one direction and position I will pinpoint it and circle all over again if the signals still there I dig. I have also found out by the school of hard knocks that a soda (can just below the surface) can cause a lot of problems when just off to the side of you coil. Had one that was 12 inches away fool me. The detector pinpointed off the target and I dug a 5-inch hole I thought for sure I had a quarter hit that was shallow. Did a big circle with the detector found the can and removed it. I rescanned the whole to find an iron hit. I can say the more I use the Ex the better my finds are getting in the same spots I have hunted. Also I feel you are dead on when you said have a positive attitude. I have only had my detector since the fall and I have learned so much with it. My other 5 detectors have dust all over them.

FROM A SEASONED VETERAN WHITES USER, WHO SWITCHED TO XS LAST YEAR, AND WAS HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS, JUST BECAUSE OF THE ABUNDANCE OF SOUNDS ( AND DIGS ) I SAY THANKS !! I WENT OUT FIRST NIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, TO A "HUNTED OUT" OLD SCHOOL BY HOME, AND FOUND 8 ITEMS WHICH MANY HUNTERS INCLUDING MYSELF PASSED OVER NUMEROUS TIMES, INCLUDING BRASS JINGLE BELL, BRASS TEACHERS BELL, LG TOKEN, INJUNS ETC.. THOUGHT I HAD DIED & GONE TO HEAVEN !! THESE WERE ALL DEEP ! SINCE THEN FRANKLY, I'VE STRUGGLED. NOT THAT I HAVN'T FOUND ANY GOOD COINS, I HAVE, BUT AS I STATED, I WAS GETTING LISTENER FATIGUE, AND DIGGING MUCH MORE JUNK THAN I WOULD HAVE WITH MY OLD TRUSTY WHITES.I USED TO BE THE LOCAL GUY THE OTHER GUYS CAME TO WITH QUESTIONS, AND NOW I'M THE NEWBIE, BUT THATS OK, CAUSE I AM WILLING TO RE-LEARN THIS THING, IN ORDER TO GO DEEPER & OLDER.THANKS FOR GIVING ME THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL !!

(and sometimes fight'n <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">)
These Findmal forums have some excellent well thought out posts from metal detectorists that are very really informative on the subject of detectors and how they could and should be used.
Great resource for info regarding the Explorer (and other brands and models).
Thanks again <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

seems to be the norm anymore if you tell ANYBODY you have an explorer. Getting old. But the funny thing is, these guys say their detector is better (Which they should, I do) but their brands forums just don't have the finds to compare to the Explorer forums. They will wake up some day. Like the guy with the spectrum I hunted with that told me the Explorer was all hype, till I found a solid barber dime that his would not even make a sound on no matter what setting he tried. He watched me dig the dime a stormed off cussing and carrying on. He had an Explorer the next time I saw him! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D"> I can't count how many times that has happened. I bet I have personally helped sell at least 10 Explorers from hunting with people. I got to quit that stuff! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">
