You could also put on a tennis racket handle cover(wind on type at most sports shops) to make it thicker and comfy

I used this type of crutch to make a swing arm for my SD2100 with large coils. I haven't tried it with a large coil to see if the coil detecs the swing arm yet, but it is very comfortible to use.
 
Made from two 5 dollar goodwill canes .........My travel shaft for the Excal 800, like it because it breaks down, fits into a backpack. The pod and all stay on rear shaft, no unbolting and bolting back just insert middle shaft into outers, latch, then tighten the threaded bands. HH..joe
