Stock Koss Headphone Issue

New member
Just wondering if anyone else out there is having a problem with the stock Koss headphoness that come with the CTX. Mine seem to be ruined where the plug meets the wire. The whole time I use the CTX that wire is always bent right after the plug for how I use the detector. I feel if the CTX came with headphones that have an "L" shaped plug this problem wouldnt have happened. I am going to have to call Koss and see what they can do, I guess. But until this problem gets solved I am going to have to use the external speaker which isnt the best to use if you want to hear those faint iffy signals.

Does anyone else have any issues?

Oh, and I had this in the classroom by accident. Didnt realize till this morning.

Never heard that problem - but I can certainly see how it could be an issue - let us know how it turns out!

Koss should take care of this. They are pretty good about it.

If they don't give me a jingle, I can send you a extra set I have.

Same thing happened to me and it was probably less than a month after I started using them. I purchased some Grey Ghost NDT's and love them.....guess I should contact Minelab about the Koss headphones.

I don't own a CTX but a good friend of mine does and within a month of using it the same thing happend. The headphones were unusable.

As others have said, Koss (or Minelab) should take care of the problem for you. Regarding your comment about using a 90 degree plug..... I've found that my headphones with a 90 degree plug must be rotated a certain direction (up) to allow the plug to go in far enough to make full contact with the jack connections. Several times I lost audio, only to learn the plug had rotated and became electronically disconnected from the jack. Usually when I had bent down to dig a target and put some strain on the cable. That is another reason I use the short pigtail "adapter" that I posted a few months back. The pigtail not only allows for the speaker to be turned off with my GG NDT's, but allows the straight plug to be fully inserted into the headphone jack module, while serving as a "strain relief" mechanism for headphones with a 90 degree plug. They have a lifetime warranty. Their website tells you how to send them in. I stopped using them as they broke on me the same way yours did so I gave up on them.

They broke twice at the jack. Same failure. Poorly designed

For about $5.00 you will be in action and if the cord wires fray again you can reuse. Not saying the stock Koss phones should not hold up better but by the time you send them in for warranty repair and all I would just spend $5.00 and fix them my self.
On the other hand you could buy some much better phones from any number of forum sponsors if you can afford them and have much better sound and quality.....

I am going to have to make a stop over at radio shack and grab a 90 degree plug, the CTX is only 2 weeks old. Cant be going through 25 pairs of headphones a year.

I have been using mine wireless. Is there a reason you don't use the wireless feature on the CTX? I have several pair of headphones just in case one quits me. Kind of like having more than one detector.

Just curious about the wireless use

Mine quit after just 5 short hunts I was shocked (not actually) the ur30 have to short of a cord. Thanks Ralph for the sunrays your timing was excellent!!

Never even plugged mine into the CTX from past experience I knew they were junk. Why they still use Koss phones on there detectors I still do not understand. The yellow water proof ones are not much better used them in the water yesterday the grey ghost are much better.

That's a nice looking quality jack Ray! Please PM me where you get these from. Agree with you--I'd just replace the jack....will take forever for Koss to replace them. I put the Koss phones on and they sounded like mud so I just threw mine in a box with about four other pairs of stock Minelab phones. My Gray Ghosts sound 100% better though if you don't have the wireless unit, you will need either true stereo or mono phones. The Explorer wiring (tip-ring) won't work -- again you can just put a mono jack on them and they will work....forget about the jumper in the earcup, that's just a way to make a stereo jack appear mono and it's bad form as it appears to an outsider that they are stereo phones--which they are not (and someone may attempt to use them as such).

Next step up in phones for me will be Chef Phones....ever heard of them?? Made in England -- good stuff!

Will do my friend! Your a life saver, thanks again.

Any true stereo or mono headset will work plugged into the CTX. The standard line of Gray Ghosts will work in the wireless module, but not in the CTX without one of two pissible modifications (you can make them simulate mono or convert them to stereo--neither of which is a good idea!). You can also replace the 1/4" stereo jack with a 1/4" mono jack. I think they make a pair for the CTX now and if you have the NDTs they should be able to make a cord for you that will work (or you can't buy one and put a mono jack on it).

can the Gray Ghosts be used directly in the 3030 and also in the wireless module?
thanks

martygene, the GG headphones will work in both the CTX 3030 and the wireless module. However, when used "as is" in the CTX 3030, they lack the control lead to shut off the detector's speaker. It doesn't hurt the detector or the headphones to use them that way. But if you want the speaker to be muted when headphones are used, further information regarding modifications and adapters is availble in this forum as well as the CTX Classroom. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

as a side note, according to another post by Erik in NJ, his ol' pappy always used to say...

When two detector comparisons contradict each other, one is wrong.

Apparenty Eriks' ol' pappy knew Erik pretty well. HH Randy
