Still cant get the 8" mono to quiet down

NathanW - You should for sure talk to Garrett - you have a "strike 2" from them. The only way to get Garrett to improve this situation is to make it clear to them that you will not tolerate a "strike 3" with this 8 inch mono. I agree with you that the 8 mono will false with the slightest bump not a bang or a bash but a little bump would cause mine to false. Garrett makes these coils right there at the factory in Texas. Why aren't these coils given a quality control check??????????? Do they want us to go away and forget about the Infinium?????????? COME ON GARRETT!!!

I appreciate all the replys. The detailed information on making sure I was doing things correctly and the "why" it is acting the way it is was especially helpful. I will be contacting Garrett for a replacement and let you know how the new one does once it is received.
Thanks again

You Guys are getting me Nervous to do a "Buy Now" on eBay cause I Need one real Bad. Ken

The Supposed Dog chewed one , when i rang it out with a meter the leads & shield read clear of each other (didn't know what ohmage i should actually get on the coil itself. trimmed the 2 sides and joined together short, fired up finny 2 feet from box but noticed i got no battery indication beeps (fresh 8 ones) went ahead & soldered up (shield connected as well & knew i was doomed b4 i fired it up went ahead & made it up anyway and same thing out of control tones with no Batt indication, just chaos . tried Freq adjust, discing , lock-slow-fast , everything. it is No-bueno period. So , FG - I buying a new one a Grab Bag ? Ken

FG ~ i would be glad to send it down under if U want to see the 8" anomaly for Urself, cause i dont even know if Garrett would tell me why a used coil i bought no worky

Well from the sound of it I would say that garrett might say something like :Toss it in the bin"
I would however be happy to have a look at the coil n check it out.

Measure ohmic resistance between each set of diagonal male and female pins on the cable plug.
Across one set should read approx 64 ohms and 0.253mh inductance. if the cable wires are not brocken or shorted.
Across the other set should read approx 3.2 ohms and 0.266mh inductance.......Ditto

There are electronic components in the coil and so there will be ohmic readings between each of the Male and female pins that will be different for different meter impedances and because of this the above readings are not true ohm and inductance values for the coil but if your readings are wildly different from these readings then there is likely a coil or cable problem. These above readings will be the same irrespective of the polarity of the meter leads. The other ohms readings across the pins in a different combination to the above will vary depending on the lead polarity and the impedance and ohms range selected.

The screen/shield does not connect to the plug shell but connects in the coil to the internal coil shield and the screen should be continuous along the length of the cable but not connected to anything at the plug end.

Just an amendment to my above post.
The screen in the infinium coil cable does connect to a pin in the cable plug but I donot know which pin (yet)

I remember last time this subject was mentioned and ..............the :punch: reply to the answer.

The wiring is still the same.

Watch the video Screaming Infinium LS, in the surf, part 2........ by G.I.B, and hear the sound of a loose pin connection while yanking the coil wire.

Ok - I got my Infinium Back from Garrett. I was excited so went to work mounting the 8 mono to my Anderson straight shaft then headed out. I was greatly disappointed with the results. This new 8 mono has the exact same problem as the one I sent back to them. Seems like Garrett would have checked this new coil for that problem before sending it to me. When I flex the coil wire right by the control box it gives a false signal. I belt mount the box and that is my problem. To check it out I mounted the box back on the factory S shaft under the cuff - installed the 8 mono - wrapped the coil wire up along the shaft and connected the cable. Headed out again and found there was no false signal with this set up. As long as the cable is not flexed it works fine. Unfortunately for me I have wrist and shoulder problems and can't swing this machine long when shaft mounted, especially on the S shaft.I am going to think about this for a couple days but I feel it will go up for sale.

Bought second hand Infinium and new waterproof headphones.

Tried to hip mount but too much noise. Taped to stick mount with extra plastic pipe to stiffen detector head.

The infinium plug seems to have a problem. Get lots of noise when the cable is moved. Taped it up to reduce problem .
Found a hole in the coil cable under the strain relief, leak in sea caused falsing . Put on silicone to repairs seems OK.
Water proof headphone gasket leaked in sea fixed withesilicone OK. was getting a tingle from the detector.

Also metal plug is connected to the 0 volt and earth screen.

Touch the plug and you get a false signal. Capacitance effect between your body and circuit?

Cut the separate earth wire from the plug to the circuit board to disconnect. The coil screen is connected through the plug pins to the circuit board, not to the body of the plug.
After all that seems like a good detector.
I may put in a fixed cable and plastic waterproof plug to replace the noisy plug. Have to build up my nerve first to try this.
regards
