Spotted this nice draft horse this afternoon...............

it was Mike's horse :super:

that was her horse. I guess I did not read her post correctly, my mistake. I still think it is a good looking horse, stout looking! Kelley (Texas)

He could use a cleaning up for sure. Everything up this way is shedding out right now. Lots of hair around. My daughter has a Percheron and Clydesdale cross she uses for vaulting. Gentle animal for sure. She was here but my daughter put her in and indoor for the winter up where she lives. She will be back at the end of March. She is looking at a free lease on a nice quarter horse right now also. Lots of free leases up this way this year.

Here are a few shots our Brownie..... The picture behind the trailer we had just grabbed him out of a 100 acre field down in Ladson , SC
where he was out all winter. No winter there to speak of but she still had some winter hair....

No grass up this way yet Fred. Our horses would go nuts if they saw green grass right now. Snow has been gone a week now in this area..... We still have a loft full of hay left over so they will fine until grass comes up and first cutting.... We put up and extra 500 bales this year so we are in good shape. Seems to be a lot of hay left over this year. Usually this time of year people are hunting for it, but not this year. Think a lot of people sold their animals at auction or gave them away...

Also, winter hair growth is triggered by the lenght of time of daylight hours. As the day shortens, their winter hair will start growing...in spring time they will start shedding their hair as the daylight time increases. I do not know why I am making mention of this because you probably already know it. Kelley (Texas) :)

to shed etc, but no harm in posting it. Others may not be aware if not a horse person. Even new horse people here, many still think its the cold weather. Nope amount of daylight reaching the eye.... See show horses up this way with lights on all the time almost to keep them looking pretty and lots of blankets....or even heated stalls...... Brownie, likes it out doors in the winter...No blanket, nice thick coat and perfers to be out... We surprised with him as she came up from the south..... Took to the cold like a duck to water...
I have a video here of a free lease Heidi is considering. Nice quarter horse. the girl went back to school and has no free time. I'll see if I can convert it. Its in and odd ball format for video and I need to change it.....

Most of the folks down here worm anywhere from every 8 weeks to every quarter. It seems that the ones with horses in public stables or the ones that show their horses worm every 8 weeks, where as those of us that kept the horses on our own property wormed every 12 weeks. I use to rotate between different wormers, but finally settled on using Ivermictin three times, then Strongin one time. My spelling of the wormers may not be correct. The Strongin is the big tube full of the thick yellow colored paste...a real pain in the tail to use. I just wonder how you folks handle the worming because of your colder weather compared to our hot climate down here in South Texas. Kelley (Texas) :)

with Ivermictin and in spring we use Panecur. For shots here they are strict. Rabies are a must, you can't even take it off your property without that one. Also Eastern / Western Encephalitis, and tetnis and whatever other virus may be present. For awhile Nile was a problem but seems to have smoothed out. More on the shorline than up here, or at least thats where the testing stations show it. Frost hits here earlier and takes them out... If you take them anywhere you also need Coggins...... Usually a group will get all their horses together at someone's farm and have a vet come and do them all, for a lot less money. Same with teeth....One stop, lots of horses brings the cost down a lot.

I only ask because, up here, the vets can be terribly expensive. The shots, etc, we take the horses in... no problem.. Now as to wormers.. we found a place in the states [Jeffers] that sells ivermectin, the same stuff that the vet uses [just a different brand name], for $2.49. They also carry quest, strongid, etc at equally reasonable prices ... some tack too. :):

If you are interested, google jeffers equine and go from there.

special on them or Stagecoach West. A lot of the tack shops use them as bait to get you in there hoping you will make other purchases.... We have been noticing that a lot of the indoors riding rings are less than half full. Or worst, yet, they are full, but its with horses the people paid for a month stall fee, then never came back and just dumped the animal on them. If you could sell them that would be fine, but there are so many free lease horses around right now or just straight up give aways that there is little market for any of them. The lady across the street from us, her indoor is empty except for her 6 horses. She was counting on the UCONN girls keeping there horses there but that all feel apart. Most come there and just ride the polo horse team horses and leave theirs at home now or sell them. Fact my daughter Heidi is looking at to free leases on some nice quarter horses at U of RhodeIsland. Same reason, either they are the parents can not afford both... All college cost in this area just jumped about 30 percent....

Jane and Heidi are going to a horse auction tonight in Mass... Fact you might enjoy there sales of horses on their web site....

Its at Crowley Auction Barn... Lots of deals here at times... Other times, not so good....

a lot of people work for Pfizer here makes the Strongid and the people who work there get is almost for free, they pick it up for the horse people. Fact we sold my wifes grandparents place to Pfizers. And we got most of our drugs there from the neighbors...
We are 1 hr form there now but still plenty of people who drive it every day. They pay decent.
