I ran the 5" and the 6" and the 4.5" x 7 Detech coils on my E-Trac for a long time.
Just my opinion ...
I've never used a 5" Sunray Coil or the 6" x 8" Excelerator Coils but I have never heard or read anything negative about either one of them - only countless reports on how great they are !
I went with these "closed" coils over the "open spoke" coils like the 6 x 8 because they are much easier to use in brush stubble and overgrown areas - less hangups.
Detech - 6" Round Coil - for me, I liked this coil the best by far - used it for well over 1000 hrs. ( till it shorted out) - great target separation in iron - great depth ( lots of 7" + Dimes ) - and still offers a reasonable amount of ground coverage.
Detech - 5" Round Coil - didn't seem to hit nearly as deep as the 6" and offers very little ground coverage - it's amazing how much smaller this coil looks and feels compared to the 6".
Detech - 4.5" x 7" Eliptical Coil - I really like the oval coil design - this is the best coil I ever used for getting into tight spots - but for me, it just didn't come close to hitting as deep as the round 6" Detech coil.
I remember reading that the depth a coil will hit is determined by the width of the coil - not the length - I'm not sure if this rule applies to both Double D and Concentric coils or not ?
Good Hunting !

Yeah you're on to something alright! Going to "hunted out" old parks 100 - 200 years old I've made a lot of great finds with my Detech Excelerator, E 5" coil. I've pulled all kind of silver from the real trashy areas around old picnic areas and old pavilions. A number of my finds were 7-9 inches deep. I'm pleasantly surprised at the depth those little puppies can go. Sure don't cover much ground with them though...
When I got my Explorer2 the guy had the stock coil and a little tiny beat to death coil. He said, while pointing to the little beaten to death coil...”Now THAT is a great coil!” I thought to myself,”Yeah, sure buddy,I know it’s just an extra item...”. It was an older Detech 5” Excelerator with a broken ear and the body of it was cracked too. That coil absolutely BLEW my mind with how accurate it was in very heavy trash, and the depth that it could achieve on a rotten corroded wheat penny was nothing short of absurd. Sadly,it ingested some water one day so I wound up getting an X-5 to replace it, another fabulous coil! IF a person has the patience, I love tiny coils and the things they can do!
