Here we are at Queenstown staying with our son and his loverly lady,it has been raining all day so at about 2 oclock we decided to go for an MD in the rain, headed for the main beach front which is right on the lake front and is very popular with tourists all year round. So ignoring all the strange looks from the cafe and bar patrons away we went, well this place is a goldmine within 2 hours we had 45 dollars in gold coins (only 38 in the photo brought milk and bread on the way home),also quite a few other coins some are foreign,a nice big chunky silver ring (ugly as).My son who is a first time user was using my spare detector (Xterra 705) for the first time and got strong signal under a tree, out came a very water logged package from around 6"deep carefully unfolding what was left of the very wet outer wrapping inside was another layer of paper, inside this were the two rings in the picture. It was very obvious by the age of the paper and the depth that it had been in the ground for some years. The rings were wrapped in what appears to be a photo, but due to the age and water damage it could not be identified, the rings have names and what appears to be a japanese date (17-3) also the word... silver... is embossed inside both of them.A search through the net couldnt find anything so the next stop will be the police. Its is all a bit strange we can only assume they were lost yet it appears they were buried.....PS a lot of Japanese couples of over here for there weddings and combine it with a honeymoon.

CRACKING FINDS :clapping:

But you don't mean "GOLD" coins but gold colored coins, right?

Let us know about the progress with your search in regards to the Rings

Is your son hooked?

Regards and HH

What an intriguing story.

That find from under the tree,....well, I must admit, it just touches the heart.

I've recounted on the forum before, how such finds always saddens me, and makes me wish I possessed some super-clairvoyant power, so that I could redress matters.

Have you retained the soaked/damaged wrappings?

Please tell us if you are able to find any clues to this episode.

Two rings...one small and one larger, suggests.....well who really knows?

Anyway...thanks for sharing your story......Best wishes....Matt.

p.s. I forgot to mention how your story also reminded me of my favorite old romantic film, 'Love is a many splendored thing'.in which the theme song was 'Once on a high and windy hill'

That scene under the lonely tree on the hill over looking the harbour.......(Jennifer Jones & William Holden)

That's a real nice bunch of finds - congrats ! :beers:

Busy day of digging awesome finds,

I too am curious as to whether or not you are talking about real gold coins or gold plated.

Thx 4 post and congrats,

Moose

Thanks for looking,no they are not gold, just look that way we just call them goldies, and yip my son is now hooked we have been out again all day today looking around the old goldmines etc, without much success but it was good just spending time together. Also no the paper and the photo unfortunatly were just to far gone,we are still trying to unravel the story, lots of theorys but it is a guessing game.

KiwiiJ,

Where are you detecting?

Just noticing the rings have a concave outer edge, very odd. Were they both found in the same location? looks like they are matching pair (husband and wife). Very Ironic to find 2 odd rings in same hunt.

Thanks for the story and the pictures Jim! Congratulations on yer finds!

Just a reply to a couple of querys,we are detecting on the shore line of Lake Wapatipu which lies in the lower half of the South Island of New Zealand, along with several dozen other lakes, the town is called Queenstown it is a very busy tourist attraction town the home of bungy jumping, and jet boating. Also yes both rings were found together in the same parcel.the mind boggles thinking about the possible reasons.....cheers jim
