So you want an Explorer SE??

I have been out with my Se 2 times I have exp2 also. I like the Se its faster an the pitch hold is the best thing that has ever happened to the exp it reminds of the Sov but only changes pitch on good targets have found a few coins that were on the fringes of my coil Don't think I would go back. seems to go deep In 2 short hunts I found 1 merc 2 wheats 1 silver ring

For me Air testing has been a bit sketchy and I pretty much have to run the object pretty close to the coil. Electrical lines have played havoc on my detector rendering it pretty much useless even with noise cancelling. But in open areas away from interference it has been great.

I never thought about a cell phone. Don't usually carry one but I have a few times and perhaps that caused some of the wacky behaviours I have encountered.

First Read how to set your Sensitivity . Then go to Bings Blog Pg:

Chapter I: Setting the Sensitivity on the Minelab Explorer (Update 08-03-2005)
Setting the sensitivity is the single most important adjustment you need to master on the Minelab Exlorer. It dictates the depth that you will achieve and ease of which you will be able to use this amazing machine. The techniques that follow are meant to guide you through the most neglected aspect of the machine.

First of all, realize that when you set sensitivity to a level where your threshold disappears for a second or two at a time, you have set it to a level that is detrimental to achieving maximum depth. When the threshold disappears, the detector is actually nulling. As the detector nulls, your visual ID actually hangs as the internal processor struggles to get things going again. Until you get the threshold back, you won

Dropping the gain is what I have been trying to tell people that smoothed my machine right out. My gain is set at 4. I have used lower. Use the best headphones you can get. The factory setting is crazy. MHO anyway.

If you are having problems with your SE turn settings down then work up to something you can live with. This is one hell of a machine.

Here are my present setting. (Everything is subject to conditions of course)Just remember there is no one way to set it up.
Audio
Responce
Normal
Volume
Max Limit = 6
Gain = 4 (have been happy lower)
Tone
TH Tone = 5
Varability = 9 (9 just sounded better to my ears)
Limits = 9
Sounds
Ferrous
Options (depends on contions and what you are hunting for)
Fast = Off
Deep = Off

Usually hunt in all metal, digital, large numbers. Have Sunray probe, 4.5 x 7, stock 10" , 12" & 18" Detech coils.

Thanks Dennis,
a lot of great info there ~ good to get all these resources...

Great place to share eh?

I have been using my trusty Explorer XS since the day it was released and it's still ticking! I did purchase the Explorer ll at one point to compare signals. I firmly believe that my original XS will "see" the same target as the Expll and SE. Perhaps that's due to my slow swinging hunting style- HH'g -Brian

It is my understanding that if you drop the gain too much, you wont hear deeper signals as well. according to the manual, the gain magnifies weak or deep signals. the last thing i want to do is sacrifice those! Hans at minelab couldnt figure out the problem over the phone.. he suggested sending the machine in.
