Smoking new detector!:smoke:

Johnny Cache

New member
Happy new year folks! I have been reading a lot about the AT Pro. It sounds like a great machine, and I apologize if the following questions are redundant.

I got my first detector back in May, the GTaX550, and used it A LOT until it got too cold to hunt around the end of October. I feel like I was a quick learner, and I think I need to get a higher end machine. I will always keep and use my GTaX550, I like it a lot, that's for sure.

I QUIT SMOKING cigarettes 11 days ago, and it is very hard, but I am doing it for my health, and for my wife and little girl. As an added bonus, my wife told me if I stay quit I can get a new detector in the Spring. Cigarettes here are nearly $14 per pack, and I smoke about a pack per day. My saved "smoking money" should add up quick. This is the first time I have not smoked for more than 48 hrs in 18 years! I must be more addicted to metal detecting:hot:! It's really hard, but It's totally worth it, especially getting a new detector!

That brings me to my dilemma, what detector to get? I like to hunt homesteads, yards and generally grassy prairie areas. I hunt primarily for coins, but also like to find jewelry and cool relics. I know this is a Garrett forum, and I realize everybody here (myself included) loves Garrett. I am very interested in the AT Pro, it sounds like an awesome detector, especially for the price. HOWEVER, if we forget about the price, what detector would be the ultimate one for me and what I like to hunt? I am thinking about the Minelab E-trac, or the GTI 2500...and of course the AT Pro.

What do you think???

Good luck with the quiting smoking ... youll do fine..

I quit smoking, after 40 years, a little over a year ago. Hang in there and get yourself an AT PRO.

Naaa quiting is very easy, I did it hundreds of times. :heh:

Seriously, more power to you. I smoked for 40 years and quit 15 years ago. Stick with it and good luck.

Hard to beat that Imaging in the 2500 and it has faster recovery speed than the E-trac. 2500 will get the depth of the E-trac if you use the 12.5 coil or the new 11x8.5 DD. AT Pro is nice too!

Take any brand and compare service. Which brand has more complaints? What about the weight of the machine? Is 4 or 5 pounds too heavy? Maybe 3 pounds is better? What about a learning curve? Are there too many adjustments? Are you going to hunt around or in the water (that's where the gold is)? Just because a machine costs more doesn't mean it's better for you.

Congrats on quitting smoking !!.....I did it a few years ago and also quit drinking at the same time ..... Everybody needs a reason to quit ....Once you have that in place , it makes it easier .......As far as a detector goes , and you said forgetting about money , I would definitely go for an E Trac ...... There are other machines that can excel in water, and others that can go deeper , but don't have the discrimination , but for an all around machine , the E Trac will smokem all !!....( no pun intended ) ...... If you are concerned about the weight , buy a Swingy Thingy...( it's a device to aid in holding your coil up while swinging ) .....Take your time to learn it and it will reward you with finds like no other machine .... I've had and still have other machines, but the E Trac is the King of all of them ....It's a good solid machine that you will own for years as it's very well built ..... Good Luck in your search ....Sincerely, Jim

Lest you be blindsided by fanboy's, ask your question on various forums. A lot of people consider their detectors to be the 'King of the Hill' and it makes them happy to believe that. Do a careful comparison between the models and look for the features that you REALLY need first. Work from there. As an aside, and this is oft said but true, if there was a real 'best detector' made by a company, then the others would go outta business. As it is, there isn't.. just hype. ..Willy.

I'd wait to decide until warmer weather gets closer. I get the feeling there might be something else new on the market by then.

Congrats and good luck on the quitting. I smoked for 20 years too. Quit about 5 years ago. Its great that you are doing it for yourself. Even better that you are doing it for your wife and little girl. I'm sure they want you around for a long time. What may help when you get those temptations is to carry a picture of your wife and little girl. Look at the picture everytime you want to smoke and day by day it will start getting easier.

I'd vote for the AT Pro, mainly because I just got one and I love it.

Thanks for the input everybody, keep the responses coming, I need all the info I can get!

Yes cigarettes here in Canada are taxed like crazy. Minimum wage here is $9.25/hr, and our dollar is on par with the U.S. dollar, so that gives you an idea how truly expensive they are!

I am glad to hear you are quitting smoking. I have had severl types of machines. First I will say that the Etrac is a fine machine. I also like the F75. I have the At pro and love it. I would not worry about any learning curve with it. The Pro was designed to work with beginners also.
It's lite and gets depth and will hunt just about everywhere for any target. Practice is the key. Some things will come easy. Some you have to work at.

Get the pro or 2 compared to the price of Others.

Congrats on quitting the "death sticks". New Years Day was my seventh anniversary without a smoke, and I smoked for 19 years before that.

And good luck with whatever detector you decide to buy...they all have their strong (and weak) points. I'm not going to tell you which brand to buy. But you can see what brands I use. HH !!

Congrats on stopping the smoking. You've just added years to your life!

If you don't need a TID screen, you may also want to look at the Tesoro Tejon. It hits well on the coins and the rings and the relics!

Minelab E-trac is your answer. The 2500 is old technology., but you can alway have the Garrett 250 / 350 as a back up.

Happy Hunting
Bruce

Minelab Xterra 305

Garrett Ace 250

Congrats on your real smoke break. Well u opened up the door when u mentioned "forget about price and what would be the ultimate for you". All these recomendations for your type of hunting on this forum has to be challenging to you . Best of luck on your choice .I think the Atpro is great , simply because of the sites i have hunted over and over with other models and came back with The At and found so much stuff it was amazing (ever heard that before with detectors) HA same old story. The At pro is not a $499.00 dollar machine. To me it seems like an insult to sell it for less , just my opinion JC.

I owned an Explorer ll many years ago and found it tough to bond with. First, it sounded like a band finding coins, and second, this was the worst pin pointing detector I had ever used. The detector was amazing at the beach. Let me restate, amazing. Deeper than I ever thought. Plus at the beach you don't need the pinpoint. Thought that the etrac might be different..... watch this video before you switch brands. I couldn't tell where the coin was.

First of all there ain't no such thing as the "best detector" - only the one that is best for you, your experience, expertise, hunting style, areas you hunt, soil conditions, etc. What is best for someone else could be mind boggling lousy for you. Everybody is going to tell you there's is the best but that's just their opinion not fact. All the places you want to hunt could be hunted with the 550. But if you just want a new one pick one that has the features you want, performance, etc. If you have any local dealers close go try a few out. The At would be a good choice as would the 2500 with imaging which spoils you for other detectors. Good luck in your choice.
