Funny you should say that Chris, for I was discussing that very thing with a mate, a few nights ago.

Quite a few things have happened in my life time, that certainly made me think along those lines.

You may have read where I tell of sometimes feeling some very strong, sad emotions when I've found a target.

Generally, the item is one of obviously personal value, and their loss must have caused the original owner much sadness.

I truly believe It's something that you inherit, for the bond between me and my mother, invoked some amazing consequences.

Maybe Findmall should start a forum, for those with tales to tell ?????????? ...........TheMarshall

Thanks Andy. I'm reading your posts as if you believe I'm "bashing" the E-Trac. I'm not. I am however questioning the decision process at Minelab. I can't help but feel they were trying to do exactly what other industries have done (IE. Microsoft) and make a great "out of box" experience at the expense of making a better system. I just think it wasn't necessary in that price range. Yes, I know its faster and handles iron better and it beeps when you pass over metal.

Having you respond to these posts is outstanding, and it tells me something. The field testers are watching. That's what CAN make these forums so valuable to all that love the hobby. If, however, the moderators (READ: Fisher Forum) are deleting the "naysayers" or everyone is insulting them personally then the product may go in a different direction. We all "get it" ... the E-Trac owners love the machine, but I have yet to see an E-Trac owner talk about the parts they wish were better, or the parts they miss from their Explorer.

I think Minelab would've sold a lot more if they had tweaked the Explorer software and made it as fast as the F75, because the universal complaint about the Explorer line is speed. It would seem that if you fix that, you're golden in the industry. Instead they made a fast machine, but eliminated the parts Explorer folks love.

So come on, give us a wink and a nod that a faster Explorer is on the horizon. It won't hurt E-Trac sales; I promise!

I'm assuming it took some programming effort to change things on the ETrac. They must have had a goal of some sort to do what they did. I just haven't heard what it was.

I think the message should be that a WIDELY distributed TID is better than a NARROWLY distributed one. Until someone can make a detector that IDs accurately 100% of the time, in trash, mineralization, or on a boat with a goat; more information will be provided by using more of the 2D screeen real estate. Perhaps they could even go farther; map the opposite from what they did on the Etrac, spread things apart even farther, so a bottle cap remains miles away from a pull tab or a silver coin and so on.

Chris

times than I I have used it I have done pretty good. One day found 6 silver dimes , been a long time since that has happened to me here in In. I have had a lot of different detectors but have gone back to the same places with the ET and have found many good coins, even not having much of a chance to use it due to winter coming. If some guys think the explorer is better then keep using it,some guys like the F-75 better, some like the DFX better, some the Garrett2500,ect... Not many of us are making a living looking for coins, so most is just FUN. Some guys find a lot with the Garrett 250!!!!!!!!! Bottom line is I like the E-Trac.. At least for now, heard Dick Schultz is GONE.. Hope minelab continues the USA sales and service...HH

people see what they want to see. I have both ,and your right. Both good detectors, just not sure which will work the best in the soil I hunt. Have to wait till spring and see.

No one is questioning the E-Tracs ability or your decision to buy it. Like you said, the ACE250 finds things so there's no question the E-Trac can too. To say that "if you don't like it, you don't have to buy it," is a no-brainer. Who wouldn't know that? To say the two can't be compared is silly. So one finds relics and coins and the other....well it finds relics and coins.... one is $1200 and one is $1500. They are perfect for comparison. The F75 and F70 can be compared in the same manner. If the F85 goes from a 1-99 TID to 1-50 TID, it would be legitimate to ask why and question the decision.

I'd like the Minelab field testers to see folks would purchase a VERY FAST Explorer. The problem with upgrading from the XS to the II to the SE is there wasn't much difference in speed.

I certainly wouldn't say that posting a couple of graphs and questioning the direction is the "basis" for misinformation. Come on guys....

Not to get into a debacle here but one thing most of us forget. Minelab is tuned to be used all over the world. Not just here in the states. Not everyone uses there ET for hunting U.S. Silver in parks. Like some here i don't hunt while stareing at the screen, i hunt by sound. Once i get the sound im looking for i then go to the screen. Don't over analize it.

Tomaeto......tomaughto....... use what ever, and compare. Everyones right...Metal detecting is better than politics. Gotta love it!

You hit the mark with that simple statement! Sound always wins, the target display is an additonal tool . . . . use it for your type of hunting and if the "S-curve" fits your needs better, then Minelab has you covered . . . . with the Explorer.

I agree with Steve From Ohio. If the etrac enables me to find what I'm looking for I don't care what the graph looks like. I got an Etrac when they came out and I still have both of my XSs. (Can't have too many machines) With the XS, I use a combination of: sound, graph, and digital, along with the basic "gut feeling" on iffy targets. With that, I have held my own among other club members. I just need to get out more. The etrac...as time goes by hopefully I can pick up the correct "stye" and be successful with it as well. ...Does anyone wonder if the Explorer graphs had been straight and the Etrac graph been S shaped, that we would still have complaints about changing the graph??? I do. We got used to seeing something that helped our success, and as nature has it, we don't want to change. Whether the graph is straight, S shaped or square, I think i'll still find the things I'm looking for... The relaxation of being outdoors, with friends, and maybe finding some silver along the way as a bonus.

Would I trade my E-track for my old SE pro. NO WAY. Sold that bad boy and have never looked back. If you like your Explorer great they have a forum for it too. :drinking:

No one is whining. The questions are legit in preparation for spending $1500 freaking bucks. In my business, hearing from your customer about what could be better is CRUCIAL to competitive success. Shutting them up by saying "buy something else" or "keep what you have" or "stop whining" is just

Growing Weary of the same old &^&* in this thread.....Shambler....................It is wonderful if you like/Love your old Explorer, and want a new improved version..I hope Minelab makes one just for you,and a few other disgruntled E-Trac haters..............But...........In defence of Minelabs new technology.............................I ............(As well as many others on THIS Forum) LOVE -----MY----New E-Trac !!!!!!! ........Ever think about taking this question where it belongs?...........The EXPLORER FORUM ??..................This thread looks just like your Avatar does to me.............A Dead Corpse.
Ohhh .................J.M.H.O. !!!!!!!!

I have no experience like you do when it comes to metal detecting. I have for the last several months studied every site I could find that had any kind of reviews dealing with every detector I thought I might like to own.

I did narrow it down in the end to 5 detectors. Then down to 2 detectors. Both of these detectors are made by the same company, but to me they are diametrically different. I was looking at the Minelab X-Terra 70 and the E-Trac...

Money was and did play a small part in my decision, but it was not by any means the deciding factor. The other 3 detectors cost as much as the X-Terra or E-Trac. I was seriously looking at the X-Terra because of all the reviews.

Then being a newbie, I decided that although the E-Trac seemed to be giving issues to some who owned an Explorer, to those that never owned an Explorer they didn't or couldn't find issues with the E-Trac. My thoughts were, if they didn't have those issues, then I probably wouldn't have them either. Also, some of those that owned an Explorer and switched, for the most part have come to accept the differences of the 2 machines. Some have learned to use their E-Tracs and have gone on to find more and deeper things.

So, being a newbie, I took the plunge and bought an E-Trac... I made that decision really not by those that told me, "it's a no brainer," but by doing my own research and combining everything that I learned. I did appreciate those that answered my posts about my own concerns in purchasing a machine.

Which ever way you go, I hope, that you find the best answer for you and that you are happy with your decision. Myself, I am very happy with my decision.

Take care.

Hello Bluewhisper,
I have owned many detectors. My First Minelab detector was the X-Terra 70.............I was as happy with that purchase as I was with any of my others....But...........When I purchashed my E-Trac................within.....a month.......I started finding allot more Silver than I ever hoped to find.
I am sure I will shatter all my silver record finds just mid this year...........Welcome aboard.............Hope you don't live & hunt near me LOL

McNickle - Might I suggest you skip this thread when you're perusing the site next? That way you won't have to be so unpleasant.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to my original post. The "jury is still out" for me. I'm hoping my local dealer will let me swing one a bit this spring. Maybe I'll swing it over a Half Eagle :)

In the mean time, I'll put my E-Trac questions in the Explorer forum. Makes perfect sense

"tweaked the Explorer software and made it as fast as the F75" Qutoe" Shambler, Most TID Minelabs are a proccesser based machine. The F75s and alot of others are still circut based. Thats why the 75 has such a speed. Haveing alot of time with both machines the 75 reminds me of the young bull and the EZ-trac reminds me of the old bull. I'll slow down and get them all.

Deja vu!

Go back to maybe September or October '08 posts and you'll read an almost identical discussion -- almost word-for-word. KatMan.
