Sites in South Texas

lilsaints

New member
My wife and I just purchased our first detector, White MTX. We are taking or motorhome to southeast and south Texas for a month or so. We will be in the Houston to Brownsville and Mcallen area. Are there any recommended places we might have some detecting fun?

Thanks,

This may be a little late but some good places down here in the Brownsville area would be the following

South Padre Island: John Singer lived here prior to the Civil War and after the war started because of his northern ties, he buried 60,000 in coins marked the spot and headed north with his wife, but when he returned the shifting sands had concealed the location of the site. His ranch is said to have been located on the north end of the island. Also in and around the Laguna Madre as old ships used to dock there and trade Gold for cotton, this is also a big fishing area so you will make out good on loose change. Also three spanish galleons wrecked off the coast am not familar with the names but if you go to the Padre Island Trading Company the owner has not only maps of his find locations he will share with you, but can point you to some good spots.

Boca Chica Beach: If you go here only go during the day and don't be shocked if you see illegals crossing as the water here is very shallow, also carry ID the border patrol will check sometimes.

Palo Alto Battlefield area: Notice I said area, if you go onto the grounds you will need any money found to post bond but there is alot of area across the road and behind the actual field, check with the Los Fresnos Police Department or the Park Police at the battlefield and ask what is and is not ok they are good guys Beware of catus and snakes this time of year.

Playground and running trails: Off Parades Line Road here in Brownsville there is a playground and trail next to the convention center, both the trail and the playground get alot of use, should be good for clad and maybe some silver or jewelry.

***When you get close to the river do not wear green of any kind as the dopers on the other side often shoot at the Border Patrol here and they have green uniforms. Also no river locations at night, really it would be best to avoid it(the river) all together if your not with a local its not a safe place if you get into the wrong area*** PM me and I'll go with you.

If you got this late sorry just saw it, but if you did get it late keep it in mind for the next trip. I know some people will see that river thing and think this place is %$#@ but really its nice, the river area is like a big city, its nice if you stay out of the bad areas.
