Since we all love Comparisons, Here is a not so scientific One......

I owned an Excal and its a good machine its just not my machine of choice, I prefer a PI over the Excal... I read all the time how PI's find tons of junk and deep bobbiepins... I LMAO at people who can say that because they don't know what the blank they are talking about... If I had more junk in the water around here I would still have my Excal but I didn't need it... I have 3 detectors collecting dust because I use my PI 90% of the time... sometimes I feel like selling my other machines but I keep them just in case...

I thought others might be interested in the Info. Part of what caused me to post, is that honestly I was a bit disappointed in how the Surf PI DF compared to my GQA2 especially considering how whites stated " the patent pending dual coils provide superb sensitivity to small targets from the inner 6" coil." It was an attempt to provide people with some information to make an informed judgement as to whether they wanted to buy a new PI when it may not live up to the promises of the manufacturer. It was not my intention to say this is deeper or that is deeper. I just wanted to provide some info so others can make a more informed decision. Had I had the opportunity to thoroughly test this unit before purchasing it, I may have re-evaluated that decision. I now own the unit, will use it, and will find gold with it, just like any of my detectors, I just don't think it will be as hot on small gold as everyone believes. Just my humble opinion.... do with it what you will....
Regards All,
Keith

Keith.. I can't remember who it was but last year or the year before a member here did an air test on with the Excalibur and he was not getting the results you got by a long shot.. his results were in the 6 to 9 inch range air testing coins and gold rings... I know for fact the Excal is deeper than that so like I said in my first post I don't put any weight in air tests because what you get in an air test and in the actual wet sand or water are very, very different..

If I was to follow your air testing of the new Dual Coil PI it would tell me not to buy the new machine.. the fact it has a coil almost 3 inches bigger then mine should mean more depth and thats what I am after... I rather have more depth than sensitivity to small gold... I'm after big heavy rings I could care less about thin chains or thin rings.. so if the new Dual Coil gives me 1 more inch than I get now then its a machine I will try :)

most of us who have owned one of eric fosters machines knows how deep they go and the stories i have heard about the gold scan 5 on the beach - well i know i do not ever want one of those

i have never owned a detector pro HH PI, but i have heard some amazing stories about their depth as well.

DEEP.............................deep takes time

DEEP.............................breaks scoops and hurts your shoulders

sunglasses 12 to 15 scoops deep......................HOW DEEP DOES A GOLD RING GO.................HOW FAST DOES IT SINK INTO THE SAND?

85% or more of what we find this time of year are fresh drops................HOW DEEP DO THEY GO - we all find them with many different makes of detectors

HOW DEEP DOES ONE WANT TO DIG - how much time are u willing to put into one target

va beach is very trashy, so i sold my PI and opted back to the excals......................in 2007 i tried Tesoro tiger shark, then in 2008 i tired fisher CZ 21 - i sold them both because they could not compare to the excals DISCRIMINATING - and in trashy beaches u need a good discriminator.

craig, the next time u see gary storm on one of your beaches, u just ask him which detector on the market has the best discriminator. he built it, he patented it and he sold it and he will tell u if u ask him

we all take what the surfgod gives us and we are happy when he does regardless to what we use or how far we dig down for it

myself, i just like to spend quality time digging good targets for the most part and not waisting a lot of time digging junk...............

good luck everybody

hope we all do good in surfchurch tomorrow

That's what I told them the other day and they responded by telling me that customer feedback on the Viper was excellent. Ignorance is bliss? - a fool in a fool's paradise? call it what you will but people like that junk. :nopity:

Go Figure, Max?

Let them buy it... let them find all the iron and we will follow them cleaning up the "scraps" gold/silver/platinum ;)

Max.. you put up an interesting post... I completely agree the Excaliburs discrimination is top notch... I don't need it though on the beaches I hunt.. I'm willing to dig a little more junk with a PI because I'll get deeper than a discriminating machine, I'll get that deep old gold that I seek... I don't find many fresh drops on the beaches I hunt... I read where I am wasting time ...let me tell you I am not wasting time here is why... The Excal works best with a slow sweep... I can cover alot more area with my PI because I can swing it a heck alot faster than I could the Excal and that was a turn off for me... I don't miss deep targets swinging fast... does the PI find junk you bet it does but I have taken the time to learn what junk sounds like... Does the Excal find junk? oh yeah it loves canslaw and its favorite meal is bottlecaps and they sure sound good ;)When I can cover more area then you can with a slow sweep machine I have a better chance of getting the good stuff...

As to the Detector Pro HHer PI its real deep and a great detector my hunting partner has one... in fact everyone I hunt with uses a PI either the PI PRO,HeadHunter, or Barracuda... we want depth over discrimination....

I haven't had the pleasure of hunting with Gary but I have hunted with his business partner Carter.. nice guy and I have spoken with Gary a few times on the phone and he is a great guy as well and we traded a few hunting secrets as we hunt alot of the same area's... I know all about the Excal Max.. I'm a PI guy all the way :) I'm not here to bash your detector its a good detector, its just not for me...

Someone said we were debating... this is not a debate its a conversation amongst friends who enjoy the same hobby......... at least I hope so lol....

Thank you much for taking the time for this..... even though i just got my PI PRO, and it is a depth monster... i now know, again , thanks to you, that my next machine will be the new PI that you tested.. being in water, i see it will ROCK! for where and what i do, mahalo Mikey

Well done Max.100% right.

You tested the targets by waving them across the top of the coil?

Aren't some coils more "directional" than others?
