Since we all love Comparisons, Here is a not so scientific One......

Well I couldn't stand it any longer... I was going to dump a load of cash on a GS5C for the beach. Suddenly the Surf PI DF hits the market, and offers me a PI that I could dive with in addition to my GQA2. Since early reports were promising I decided today that I would put off the GQ5C until later in the year and went out and picked up the DF. I opted to spend 899.99 instead of 2650.00 on a detector. (I think I was afraid of my wife seeing the bill). Since I am still recuperating from my arthroscope on Monday, I had to play inside, so I set up some air tests comparing the new Surf PI DF, the GQA2 and the Excal 1000 in a not so scientific method on the bench (err... Kitchen table).

Each unit was tested using several gold rings, a couple of earrings and a gold chain. The setups were as follows:
SurfPI DF: Gain 2:00 position, Pulse timing 10us, and threshold to a whisper.
GQA2: SAT min, Pulse Delay min (10us), and threshold to a whisper.
Excal 1000: 0 Disc, Sens 11:00, and threshold to a whisper for Disc and PP

I know... everyone says air testing doesn't give a true measure of a PI's depth, but I have yet to dig a gold ring deeper than my PI has air tested, and my whole reason for this was to generate a performance reference between the 2 PI's. ( I sure wasn't about to start burying gold on the beach to find out if it's true). The Excal was handy and I do turn to it quite a bit, so I felt it deserved an opportunity :)

For the testing each Item was moved back and forth above the coil and I did my best to eke out the maximum depth of each unit where I could be reasonably sure the slight deflections I heard in the threshold where target responses, not noise. These responses where so low, it is my belief that in real world hunting, with all the surf noise, these responses may go unheard. The range was then read off the ruler.... Anyway here are the pics, and the results..... Please don't beat me up too badly.... It's been quite boring not being able to detect.

BTW: I did give the DF a second and third chance on the gold horn and the diamond earring..... :(

Thats great work you did! Thanks for sharing...this is the kind of knowledge that makes this forum great!

I too was thinking about buying a GS5C, But then I really had to ask myself do I want to really dig that deep, My GQAS goes plenty deep for me. I must be getting old. Thanks for the test results. hh willia

Interesting results... and please don't be offended but air tests are of little use to me... I know for fact my PI PRO is deeper than my Excal was and its the reason why I only use my PI now and if what others are saying that the new "Dual Coil" PI is deeper than my PRO then its my next detector...

I think the Excalibur showed some pretty impressive results for a machine that really doesn't (from what i've read here) airtest as well as it performs in actual use.

Sure its fair... If you look at the graph Crash posted...
I never said the Excal was a bad machine, I owned one, its just not as deep as a PI its fact.. the Excal has its advantages that it will null out iron on iron infested beaches but my beaches are not iron infested and I have no need for a VLF water hunting... I'm sure there are area's where you can't hunt with a PI around the country...edited to add.. no VLF I have ever owned was as deep as the Excal in dry sand but I'm not a dry sand hunter... I thought my DFX was deep in the dry sand but the Excal was a good 4 inches deeper.. impressive.. I sold it because I'm a water hunter and I didn't want a expensive detector sitting in the closet collecting dust.. :)

I hear what you are saying. I was mainly referring to the fact that the VLF was compared to the Pulse when we all know that the pulses are deeper detecting machines. In a way though, I guess the comparison actually showed a good performance from the Excal. It just seems to me that lately, the machine has been getting a bad rep and since I just bought one , i've been a little defensive of them. LOL!

how's it going max; I know what you mean on digging sun glasses. I got surprised last week on the depth of this machine again. I found the deepest piece of gold i've ever dug. it was a gold religious medalion 10K , 1" in diameter. I'm not going to get into how many inches it was down, but the only reason i dug that last scoop out is because I knew this machine has always pinpointed gold items dead on. At first I thought it was another bean dip top. I was surprised when I seen it was gold. I don't run my machine at maximun sensativity. it was a deep siginal but not real faint. maybe some day I'll get to hunt when the wind isn't blowing and I can hear the really deep ones. HH willia
