Hi, I hunted some bankers hours today (10-2) up in the Brandy Station area today, ended up with 3 nice 3ringers, hope to go back tomorrow weather permitting. My Silverumax with the 7 in widescan coil was working nicely between the bean and corn stalks, no problems with the "hot" ground I was supposed to be in. Mostly running in discrimination set at iron and then checking in all metal with sensitivity at 10 or maxed out. The only chatter I got was when I would bump a cornstalk .
Thanks for the replies, had to work today so I am going back tomorrow. I am going to try using all metal and listening for the low tones and checking the loud signals in disc above iron. We had some rain and snow overnight so the ground conditions have changed some, hopefully for the better.
Hank68, you will have to do some searching for a Depth Master Plus as they are no longer being made. Check out the auction sites or post a wanted ad. They can be found with a little searching for usually around 40.00, but they work great on any Tesoro detector without a volume knob.
RJH02,
Thanks so much for your post. You may have just answered my question as far as using the Silver uMax in the "hot" soil in that part of VA. I'm supposed to go to a hunt in that area in the spring. I hunt with, and have only ever used the Silver uMax with 9x8 coil for over 5 years now. It is an outstanding relic machine and I've never felt the need to change. I was wondering how it would do in that hot soil, but it looks like you had no problem.
A buddy of mine has offered me his Tejon to use for the hunt, but quite frankly I prefer an easy to use machine without all the bells and whistles. I've detected numerous times with guys that hunted with high $ machines that walked right over some nice CW relics because they didn't have their machines adjusted correctly. They were amazed at what this Silver uMax can do. Once they got their machines tweaked in to a relic (bullet) that I laid on top of the ground, they were fine and started finding some themselves. My best find ever, a $4000 NC CW buckle, was dug in a small area that two others went right over with their high $ machines. I have really gotten to know my machine well after all these years of using it, and can pretty much tell what the signal is going to be just by the sound.
I actually just ordered a second one to have as a backup in case someone else (property owner) wants to give detecting a try. You can't beat the simplicity, durability, and light weight of these machines.
Sorry for the long-winded reply, and thanks again for the post.

Hi John,
I was invited to the Relic Rescue event in the spring. I've never been to one of these big CW digs, so I thought I would check it out. Not sure how well my Silver uMax will perform in that soil, but I guess I'll give it a try.

Hi ModernMiner, I don't think you will have any problem using the disc. mode with a 8x9 coil but you may in all metal. With my stock coil I was unable to use it most places around here in all metal but it worked just fine in disc mode set at iron.
