Silver Drought Ends!

Howdy--

I detect at least once a week and it's been about a month since the last time that I dug a silver coin. Wednesday, I went to a nearby town to visit a friend and do some detecting. We drove around looking for a vacant lot to hunt and found one that we deemed had potential. My buddy found a nice 1946-S Roosevelt and a few wheat cents. I hunted the front of the lot where the sidewalk and entrance to a house would have been. After digging a couple wheat cents and a 1958-D Roosevelt I got an 86-87 reading @ 6". It pinpointed with 2.5 dominant. It was a 1945 Washington. When I re-checked the hole, I STILL got an 86-87 reading. It turned out that there were 2 more Washington's in that hole: a 1953-D and a 1964-D. The drought is over!

As usual, we didn't cover all of that lot so we returned to it Saturday. My buddy dug a few wheat cents and memorials. I increased my sensitivities a bit and dug the lone silver of the day: a 1962-D Roosevelt. I was using the 6X10 White's coil on my V3i. The 6x10 is one of my favorite coils when a combination of depth and target separation is needed. Best of luck and...

Good Hunting Blind Squirrel. Maybe you can leave me a Merc on some lot that I can find sometimes.

Those silvers sure aren't very shiney. I've maybe missed silvers because I don't check dates a lot if they are dull like that. DOH

I would have missed those too, that is the way clad comes out of the ground here and silver is as shinny as the day they lost it unless the silver was found in a lake or river.

We are in west Texas and silver coins hardly ever come out of our ground shiny. Most of the time they are almost black or extra dull grey. Like Blind Squirrel said, they hit about 86-87 VDI on the V3i and clad quarters will hit 83-85

That is so strange. Has me wanting to recheck some of my clad.
Here in N.E. Alabama when you are lucky enough to find silver it comes out like new.
No rubbing required.
Still GREAT FINDS!

The soil in this neck-of-the-woods is pretty tough on silver and copper too. I've gotten into the habit of carefully checking the dates on all coins that I dig, including copper Memorials. I'm still looking for that 1972 and 1969-S double die Memorial Cent. Either one would REALLY make my day! Best of luck and...

Howdy Larry (IL)--

The clad around here usually comes out with a reddish tint - but not always. It behooves me to check the dates on ALL coins that I dig. I know what you mean about silver dug in other soil conditions. In the north east I've dug deep silver that still has luster. If I showed the coins to local detectorists, they probably wouldn't believe that they were dug. Best of luck and...

Thanks gldfver--

It never hurts to closely check ALL of our finds. I sometimes swing my trusty old DFX - just to make sure that it still works and to keep my detecting techniques sharp. Well, on one such occasion I dug a neat old sterling silver buckle and posted a picture of it on the DFX forum. Someone there saw my post and had dug a similar buckle and didn't realize that it was Sterling. He was glad that I posted the picture and now checks his finds closely. Best of luck and...
