Shut downs and error messages

I have an idea for some of you to try if you wouldn't mind. On just a hunch and a little inside info, the shutdown problem might not be a problem with the detector itself but with the smart Li-ion battery pack. If you would, could some of you run a set of alkalines on the CTX? I have heard that the shutdown problem does not happen with alkaline batteries but I would sure like to have some more input on the subject. I will be running alkalines myself.

I might remind you that Minelab IS working to fix the problem. Being a product tester myself, we are strictly limited in what information we can share with the public because of a legal document called a NDA, Non Disclosure Agreement, so please cut the testers some slack.

So if you would, use the alkaline pack and keep us posted, Thanks.

Hi Larry,

When I first got my CTX, I already had a set of rechargables, all charged and ready for delivery,
I didn't want to straight in the the main batt pack as I wanted a full charge before I plugged it in,
So off I went with the rechargers alone, about an hour in my trial, I decided to enable the gps & track myself,
15 mins or so after that my machine shut down, no warning or beeps,
I just presumed the rechargers were done, prob a bad cell or something,
I got home tried some more & still nothing, so I charged the main pack up, plugged that in & still nothing,
I thought it had died, contacted my supplier who was ready to send me a replacement out, but asked me to
Try a fresh pack of batteries frome the store,
By this time it was all boxed up and ready to go back.
My partner came home that night, so I unpacked it all to show her the new dead machine,
Pressed the power button a few times to show it wasn't working, & on the last press before I was
To pack it back up it came back to life, this was with the battery pack supplied,
I ran it for a while, left it on idle & still kept on running, not a glitch,
I've been out with it since, along with my Etrac, just in case, and not a problem.
I'm not saying its cured, but for now I'll take both machines until its resolved.

Regards Dave.

I started with Duracells while entertaining myself with my new CTX 3030 and have not changed over. I have over 10 hours on the alkalines with no problems and my battery meter still shows over half capacity left. You may be on to something Larry. My Li-ion battery says 7.2 VDC vs. 8 alkalines at 12 volts. May need a higher capacity re-chargable. HH :minelab:

My opinion on the shutdown problem is meh shit happens. They put the Hubble telescope into space and it was near sighted. Go look around some auto/truck forums, $60,000 vehicles that have various problems after millions in engineering. I'm not saying its okay the machine does this but I'm not surprised either, this machine is a major step forward.

I agree on the bugs, it happens to all manufactures on new products.

]I put charged nimh batteries in my 3030 last night when I got it and ran about 3 hours last night and at least 5 hours today and it froze on me once where I had to pull the battery to get it to shut off. But it hasn't shut down once in all that time.

Have only used the alkaline's for about 10-12 hours. I'm sure Minelab will square this away in short order. Even with it's quirks, I am thrilled with the CTX :cheekkiss:

Is it possible the gps being enabled in the detector is losing satellite causing the detector to power down, just a thought? Is everyone having this problem or just us who seem to be using the wireless module with the gps enabled?

I don't think it is the GPS, I have not been using it and I have had two power downs in about 20 hours of use.

Some people have had a shutdown even though they are not using the gps.

I believe when Whites released their TDI a bunch of detectors went out with a batch of bad batteries from china, don't hold me to this but I remember reading this before purchasing my TDI. Not a huge problem, Minelab will make good on it. I have had no issues with mine as of yet, 30 plus hours.

nice, did you get a pre-ordered one or a new batch after the pre-orders were released?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you Doc went out for a short hunt, I have a pre order that I picked up from a dealer at 12:01am memorial day at his late nite shop event. (DeMarcos detectors) He is now working on waterproof GGhosts from what I'm hearing and so far so good testers are reporting.

Hmmm... very interesting.. anyone else here have pre-ordered machines that havent received shut downs or error messages after 30+ hours of use?

When I first assembled and tested the CTX 3030 a few days back, it shutdown on me twice. I then charged the Li-Ion battery pack completely and took it out in the field for the first time yesterday. No inadverdent shutdown problems encountered so far after 4-hours in the field.

has anyone had shut down problems (or) "unexplained error" msg. lock up while using Alkaline batteries?---Not the re-chargeables but alkalines.-----Maybe that re-chargeable battery pack could be the culprit.---Need some reports on users with alkalines.---When I was reading thru this thread, I didn't see that stated (shutdown while using alkalines), unless I missed it.---------Del
