Shovels in public parks

New member
I was out metal detecting ( well I was), I went to a different part of the town. There at the park was a Metal Detecting guy with a shovel digging targets ( crowded Public Parks). I didn't even bother getting out of my car. I watched and notice people were shaking their heads as they walked by. I know there's no silver in this park because it's a fairly new community park. My take on this is that their going to ban metal detecting if this continues. I use a lesche digger and 99% of the time I leave no signs that I was there digging. I'm also aware of who's watching me too. Just wanted other MD's opinions.

I would have walked over to him and introduced my self and try to explain that a large shovel in a Public Park is a bad deal

Hmmm...leaning somewhere between Groundscanner, Robert and BarryL!

Probably would have got creative and told them I was from the Detector company of whatever brand they were swinging and we had a product recall, so hand it over!
Naw...would have said something to them though, starting out in a gentle fashion, like Barry mentioned, but if there was any sass or stupidity on their part, then OK, proceeded on to Groundscanner time, and if that didnt work, take them right into a big dirt road beatdown Robt2300style!

You should have spoke to him (nicely) about not using a shovel and the reasons for it. Yes....there is a lot of stupid out there. It might be genetic, so new ways of doing things is always a possibility. That's why I posted this link above on this forum:

I should have told him to use a hand trowel,,yeah I guess he's giving MD a bad name. I was going to detect even though he was there but if he gets kick off the park so goes me, that's why I left. I know some of the guys here in the club use shovel ( I refused to hunt with them) have been kicked out of a few parks due to just dragging a shovel around. They were told you can detect but no digging. Dragging a shovel or just having one out in a public park is already a sign you are digging. Thanks for the opinions I will approach next time.

refusing to use a shovel is your choice but remember they do have their place Just Not In a Public Park I use one when I hunt the woods or at the lake sometimes as it is easy than getting down on my old knee I try to use just a probe when coin hunting a city park anyway but in older parks this is not a great choice if you are looking for the older coins as they will be deeper than the probe is good for JMHO

Sometimes we just have to take things in our own hands. I have come across people in the park that did not understand what they were doing. They had just got their metal detector and wanted to get rich... They told me that they had seen others out in the parks with metal detectors. I then explained to them what they should do and left them with one of my old diggers that they bought from me. They thanked me for taking the time to explain to them what was expected.
I do not think the place they got their metal detector told them anything about what was expected, other than take their Money.

I even use my Lesche on a battlefield rather than a shovel. Its alot of work but worth maintaining a positive public image.

Their is no way on gods green earth we would even think about using a shovel at the places we metal detect in. If "any" of the parks people saw us carrying a shovel around, we would be out on our ear. We get checked on regularly and they are quit happy with us at this point.

People like that just really don't understand or care, I think it would have been appropriate to just bring it to their attention that in the area they are metal detecting in, using shovels isn't an accepted form of digging and what he/she is doing, will ruin it for all of us eventually. If they just shrug you off, then go for the 3 count.

:)

Some people just don`t have common sense. I never detect my local park when it is crowded and I never use a shovel, heck I don`t even wear my recovery pouch on my side, I just put everything in my pocket trash or treasure. I have found for myself that a nice overcast sunday with a slight drizzle is the perfect conditions. I have the whole park to myself and no grounds crews to deal with either. I also keep my hunts to no longer than a couple hours. I prefer to be out of sight, out of mind as much as possible. I think you have the right to talk to this guy and try to point him in the right direction before he ruins it for everyone else!

There is a very large and wonderful park just a mile from me.
No metal detectors allowed. Why? Because a few years back one of the
park attendants caught this young lady with her detector and a shovel
DIGGING A HOLE TO CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeesh! She was probably
getting a falsh signal or just didn't have a pin pointer. So the long and
the short of it is the park is closed to metal detecting.

THAT SAID I do have an arrangement with the park supervisor; he lets
me do the tot lot and the volly ball court as long as I stay in the sand
and the wood chips. As soon as I stray onto the grass I'm dead meat!

YUP The big shovel has to go,I would have explained.
Then I would have preceded to show him how to place a towel on
the ground to place the dirt on & to keep the plug attached to the hole.
For easy clean up.THEN bitch slapped his for being a idiot!!!

Thanks for all the comments,,I know everyone who commented here would love to see this hobby to continue on for generations without it being ban. Thanks

WELL, Obviously he has no clue. Why detect in a crowded park. All those people get in your way and haven't finished dropping their clad.

I too have a Lesche, and my trenching shovel(4"X8" blade) makes better plugs. But in such places I still use the Lesche, for appearances sake. But some people have a different attitude.

You could have said something, but it probably would have made no difference.

OK already. Talk to him nicely...and then if
THAT don't work... THEN BLIND SIDE EM!
Unless it's a girl then I don't know what to do
about that.

We have one of those D. M. F. in Regina SK that uses big shovel in a beautiful park and he is a member of several metal detecting forums .It is just a meter of time that everybody will get kicked out of the park . What one can do to prevent that to happen ?

Glue the locks on his car shut...hopefully his detector will be in the trunk?
Have no idea WHAT U should do. Notify the forums he is on? Short of
that I don't know what to tell ya. Maybe he will eventually see the light...
or have a religious awakening.
