I just got a Safari yesterday and been thinking if I should have went with the E-trac. I can still send it back and pay the difference(about $400). They seem to have quite the followers that swear by them and not nearly as many of the Safari users. Worth the jump?

not far to go 400 $ i was going to get a safari and thought i've come this far why not go all the way ? so i cant make your mind up for you but your thinking was close to mine.

No one knows how much $400.00 is worth to you. All I can tell you, is the E-Trac is much better machine than a Safari.

If you have it then spend it. The E-Trac is one hell of a machine. I used a Safari once...I liked it.....but I love my E-Trac. Besides.....you've already made up your mind, that's why you posed this question on this particular forum. You knew what the answers were going to be....you just needed to see them. :rofl:

Jeff the Safari is a good detector and will keep up with the Etrac to a point. But remember that there are some tricks to help you with the Safari and will make some great finds. If you never have used a MineLab product a Safari might be the right choice. The Etrac is a great detector, but the Safari has a lot of the programing and not the adjustments, so they are going on in the background. Bottom line, pard and I, have tested both detectors and the Safari can and will keep up with the other. But, the Safari is slower hunter. The Safari does not have all the options the Etrac has but with little thought and working with it, you can make it yours. I have some tips that my pard and I use, that might to help you. Just PM me.

Safari = Corvette
ETrac = Ferrari

Pay 400$ because when you will start using Safari you will need add 700 to buy Etrac. Nothing better in Safari when in Etrac, but they are very similar.

Which way you go depends on you, but either way welcome to the minelab family.

I always thought why would anybody buy a new Safari when for less money they could buy a used Explorer and have a better machine. Plenty of used Explorers out there that can be had at a very good price. You'd probably even have enough money left over to buy the Pro Coil or a 12x10 for the Explorer and improve it's performance to that of an SE Pro. I'm convinced that much of the improved unmasking ability of the SE or Etrac is due to the Pro Coil (or the 12x10 if you are using one of those) over the old 10" Explorer coils. The various 10" coils they had on the old Explorers were about the worst coils I've ever used on any machine in terms of seperation, pinpointing, etc.

I'm using a 12x10 on my Sovereign and it has a MUCH sharper edge to it for outstanding seperation and unmasking ability. It also gets deeper than the stock 10" coil. I swear it feels like the processor speed has been turned up because of the faster reaction it has (thanks to the sharp detection field) between targets.

Way off topic...Point is I'd buy a used Explorer and a 12x10 before I'd buy a new Safari.

Hi, I have used the Safari which I found to be a great machine and have had some great finds with it. A few months back I was in a position to upgrade to the E Trac after selling the Safari and I am only sorry I didnt pay the extra initially and go straight to the E. It has more or less the same learning curve IMHO, however the extra settings and adjustments on the E make it worth the extra cash.
If it were my decision, the Safari would go back.
Best of luck and whatever you decide, you will still have a great machine:)
