My 2 cents,Teknetics gamma or omega.
Deep and accurate target I.d.
57 is a nickel,82-83 a dime,quarter 92.
Silver Morgan 94-99

Forgot, the T2 classic is being sold for $499.00
Best deal out there.

If I could only have one detector for all around general purpose use while trying to keep to a budget, I'd have to go with a metered machine such as the Teknetics T2, or Omega 8000, or maybe the White's M6 or MXT Pro. After forty years of detecting, I like to try and better my odds by not digging every stinkin little crappy beep. I'm sure I miss a good target now and then but the time wasted digging trash targets is time not swing over good targets. I think it's probably a push at the end of the day but I don't have as much trash as many others. I love my Tesoros (Outlaw, Conquistador µMax, and Tiger Shark) but they are more specialty units and not the best for all around detecting. The meters can really help in eliminating trash targets and the depth indicators are a nice bonus.

Hi Kapok,
Two things regarding the answers you have recieved from your post are:
1.You have recieved the usual multi recommendations about which detector is best which is normal for the question you have asked.
2. Somebody suggested that no one detector can do everything in all situations.

Starting with the first point, the fact that many people recommend a lot of different detectors is a good thing as it shows that most of todays machines are giving their users great results, which in turn says that there is'nt a lot of difference performance wise between the different machines on the market today. This gives you confidence in the knowledge that whatever machine you eventually choose,it is going to give you a decent chance of a good day in the field.
Most of the guys and girls on the forum are seasoned detectorists who have put their machines through hours and hours of hunting so their recommendations are backed up by years of experience. At the end of the day it will be a matter of which detector in your price range you like the look of most, what features you are after and considerations such as weight.
So out of all those machines that have been mentioned, all seem to be doing a great job for their owners showing you that many different models and brands are worth considering.

The second point is also very true,no one machine excels at everything, one maybe a tad deeper while another may be slightly better in the trash etc, etc.Your best bet maybe to get one of the recommended detectors and add a couple of extra coils to really get the most out of it.Changing a coil on a detector can transform the machine performance wise and give you the edge you are looking for in a given situation such as a much smaller coil in trashy areas for example. This is a good way of having more than one detector without the big expense of actually buying another machine. There are some great all round detectors
out there such as the Garrett ATX pro, whites MX5,Whites M6 and detectors from fisher, teknetics etc which all accept different coils to cope with many situations. The choice is yours, but I think any of the machines that have been recommended would serve you well and give you good results. The only thing to look out for is whether you ever plan to use your detector for searching the wet sand at a saltwater beach which then starts to limit your choice a bit more.
Happy hunting.

I've owned many detectors as well. I know people with many cars. I own one, gets the job done.

I know a lot of you guys have more than one brand of detector and I read and respect a lot of the opinions I read here.

I'll admit that I’m not an expert at all, but I love the hobby a lot. I’ve been doing this off and on since 1978 and have had a Compass, White's, D-Tex (remember them?), and Garrett. I've been a loyal Tesoro user over the past 10 years and have had an Outlaw for about 2 and before that a Vaq, Bandido, Silver Sabre, etc. However, I’ve never tried a TID unit and am wondering if I'm just being blindly loyal to a brand that time forgot. With the advent of new technologies, is it time to try something else? I have 3 kids in college, so my budget won’t allow for more than one detector unfortunately...

I guess what I’m asking is if, like me, you could have only one detector, is Tesoro the one you'd hang on to?

Thanks, guys.

Hi Kapok,i've been lucky enough to try out detectors from most of the top brands over the years and I can honestly say that they have all performed very well.Once you get into the top models from each different manufacturer there is very little to choose between them performance wise in the real world.
I've used models from minelab, whites,c scope, red heat, teknetics, nautilus, tesoro, etc, etc and i've had a lot of success with all of them.I've done extensive testing with all my detectors and found they all perform in a very similar way, some may be a tad deeper or some a tad faster in the trash but no one detector has stood head and shoulders above the rest.
I will however say this,in all the years I have been detecting, the greatest success I have had both inland and on the beaches has been with detectors that have neither screens or programs. This maybe down to the fact that I enjoy a simpler form of detecting that does'nt involve creating daft programs or relying on screens that can actually help you miss targets rarther than give you an advantage.
Your detector is not old technology,it is the best technology we have presently,it's just that it is'nt dressed up in fancy clothing like many of todays machines......the outlaw will give most machines a run for their money in most situations so don't feel like you are being left behind.

Tesoro are all very good machines. The Tejon is as deep as the VLF technology could go.
I always prefer analogue machines over digital. There is so much information in the analogue sound, you just have to listen carefully.
If you want to go digital, and want the best, there is only one digital machine out there I would buy - the XP Deus. An incredible machine!
