Should I buy an Excal AND a Sov.GT

Diggin-it said:
Wow...lots of info here. Didn't want to stir up a heated debate. I should have listed what machines I currently have. I have 3 AT-Pro's, a Whites V3i, an XP Deus, and a Fisher F2. Right now I use the AT-Pro's for my water hunting. They are great and hit very nice on very tiny gold...they just are not a real deep seeing machine. I do plan on doing the waterproof mod on my XP Deus and trying it in the water. I tried one in the water last year...it is deeper seeing then the AT-Pro, has 4 different frequencies to chose from, has incredible target seperation and speed, and in the 18khz setting it nails tiny gold nicely. So I have a nice variety of machines, but just was hoping to get more depth. PI is out of the question up here. I like the fact the Sov. GT can easily change coils and headphones, and 3 year warranty compared to just one. I'm not afraid to put the GT in a makeshift waterproof enclosure, or just chest mount it and use it for my waist and shallower hunting. Man...there are some Incredible deals out there right now on the GT. I think they are just trying to get rid of remaining stock. The GT would cost me over $400 less.

I would love to try the Deus but its hard to spend that much money for something that wont work at the ocean beaches, wet sand I mean.
The AT pro is gonna hit small gold deeper than a sov in fresh water but the larger stuff the sov is better. I regret selling my AT pro. I kept my AT Gold, like the audio a little better and the all metal mode with threshold but I think the AT pro is probably the best buy out there for the buck.
best of luck in your choice, sov or excal they both work great.

Its obvious Critter we disagree about your advice.... as well as experience. I do how ever agree with Robby..... first choice would be a water machine. Dont get me wrong the Sov are outstand machines as are the Xcals. I believe they hit those med. to large rings really deep ..... what you have to decide is just how much of that tiny gold is worth your time spent looking for it. You may loose some smalls.... but you may gain some depth on the larger ones.... which do you think is a better pay day?

Gold is Gold, but I have to agree...deeper Rings is exactly what I am hoping for...both in the water and in the dry (old drops that have been lost a long time and deep now).

The XP Deus is a very nice machine and a dream to swing. It works great on freshwater beaches, dry sand. have no knowledge of how it would act on a Saltwater beach, but I would guess it could be tweaked to work...but at what cost of depth?!?

I have read they do not work well on wet salt sand but I dont know anyone with one to know for sure. Ive yet to see a video on one at the ocean.
Ive tried a myriad of machines for fresh water wading, the last before the AT series was a vaquero with the longer cabled 12X10. The control housing on that is super light and the combo was both great on gold and deep, but no tone ID at all, which is one of the main reasons I got the AT. Tiger shark as well, no ID and yes I do find it helps with a telltale audio.

Good point Dew, do I want 3 big deep rings that take a lot more digging or 1 small shallow ring that I can get in one scoop or two? I don't know... that's a tough question to answer for me because - I WANT IT ALL!! - nah just kidding. Personally, I think I want the larger rings and I will work the whispers really hard to try for the smaller stuff as well. Bottom line is that I have the water as covered as I can with my Surf PI Pro for right now, the beach covered with the Sovereign Elite, and am looking at an MXT Pro for the dirt. Once I recover financially from the MXT Pro, then my next machine after that will probably be an Excal....

I believe I have made my decision. For now I am going to pick up a Sov. GT, main reason is because of it being discontinued there are some really nice deals going on, on remaining stock. Later in the year, or when I sell a detector or 2 I am definitely going to buy an Excal 2 also. I will start learning the sounds of the Sov. GT and then should basically be able to transition into the Excal with fairly easy...is the mindset correct? This will be my first Threshold type (don't know how else to state it) detector...and I am excited to go after those deep "whisp" signals. Lucky for me I have been Blessed with above average hearing. I test yearly and the techs are amazed at my extended frequency range and hearing sensitivity.

yes, if you get good with the gt the excal will come much easier to you..... the excal factory headphones will probably sound a little muffled compared to the headphones you use on your gt...the excal factory headphones are waterproof which for somereason causes them to not sound exactly like the gt...
