Shortening the Tornado coil cable.

Just an update on the results of shortening my cable.

I have been able to increase sensitivity a little more without excessive EMI chatter. These are the same places I've hunted before and was limited by EMI to lower sensitivity.
There is no apparent degradation in performance at all from its stock length. It actually has a different crisper behavior. This could all be my imagination but I really didn't know what to expect if anything but weight reduction.
It should be noted that I added the meter and the short (meter) pigtail at the same time. Those changes could have affected the results.

This is my findings also when I did mine and like I say maybe it was just me, but it seem to make a difference for me on my 8 inch coinsearch coil. I had picked out a 3 silvers merc dimes and a few wheat pennies out of a area I was not able too before. This was also the coil I used with the shorter cable to pick out the older and deeper coins out of the old well worked park and was told to find one old coin out of and he would believe the Sovereign was better. I got over 70 coins from the 1895-1950 with some as deep as a little over 12 inches. So in my mind this shortening the cable made a difference for me but some don't see any difference and think it could be how well you know your Sovereign and the little things you learn by using the Sovereign. I know I learned something that day by accident as going super slow, slower than normal got me deeper good targets.

Good luck and hope you will see a difference like I did.

Good to hear  Jim

Since the weather has been so bad lately, spent the last few days editing a bunch of videos I had taken over the summer and this fall with the Sovereign to post on youtube, as well as some older videos on unrelated topics. Got a few up in the last few days with more in the hopper once done editing.

Wanted to put this urban legend about shortening the coil cable improving performance or depth to rest one way or the other for myself. While I was at it, I wanted to see if the rumor that not using a meter (or using one with it's own battery) would also increase depth due to some meters (such as the Digisearch) drawing their power off the TX output from the box to the coil. Besides shortening coil cables, that one about the meters has been kicked around for a while too from time to time.

So I figured, if either of the above two things could possibly improve depth even just a hair, then we should see that if I "inflict" and then remove both "burdens" on the Sovereign at the same time to compare to each other. This precisely measured video testing put any of my wondering about both to rest for me...

Without blowing the results of this video ahead of time, here's one thought about EMI- Could the external meter be a "good" way to pick up excessive external noise? Might be worth shielding one, if noise from external sources is taken in by the electronics in the meter and sent down the TX line to the coil. The GT is shielded internaly by a grounded foil shield. When I get around to taking apart my Digisearch meter to clean the pot and do an adjustment I've been wanting to make here on it, I might look into shielding the inside of it's casing if it lacks any, just in case that might help in an EMI rich environment a bit.

Where did you get the connector and is there much room in there to solder all 6 wires on?
Thx HH

I wonder what 25 turns of wire around a metal shaft make, perhaps a great receiver for Electromagnetic Interference. According to the excerpt from an article on EMI it would be nice to use shielded wire, but we all know that is not possible. I just wonder if the real benefit of a shorter coil wire is to reduce EMI.

What is EMI said:
Problems with EMI can be minimized by ensuring that all electronic equipment is operated with a good electrical ground system. In addition, cords and cables connecting the peripherals in an electronic or computer system should, if possible, be shielded to keep unwanted RF energy from entering or leaving. Specialized components such as line filters, capacitors, and inductors can be installed in power cords and interconnecting cables to reduce the EMI susceptibility of some systems. Before performing any modifications to equipment, contact the manufacturer for technical assistance. This is especially important if modifications might void an existing warranty, and it is imperative with medical devices of any kind.
