Short Apex humt, small coil, but it's not the right one.

I worked in a little time yesterday to grab my Apex and hunt a small dirt strip that was exposed, and the best tool for such a thing would be a good small coil.. This Apex has the 5" DD NEL sharp coil, and it works ... but not as well as I would like it to.

The 'right' small coil, and the one I wish Garrett would make, would be their 4.5" Concentric. The NEL Sharp works reasonably well, but some VDI readings on known US coins are 'off' a few numbers. Usually not a big deal in very dense trash with nearby masking going on, but when limited on time or otherwise wanting to make use of a VDI read-out, it would be good to have it more accurate.

Besides, I tend to favor a Concentric design and performance when possible. Did detect a few coins in the confined area I had to hunt, and the Apex, as usual, worked great. I just wish they made their own small, Concentric coil for this model.

I hear you on the coil issue. I know with my Sharpshooter on the F75 I get “skewed” numbers a little too. The thought I had is the smaller coil getting the good target better or is the larger coil influenced by the trash and either sometimes reads wrong or not at all. If I put a quarter on the ground with no interference around the larger coil I get a solid “correct” VDI as does the smaller coil. Either way the smaller coil often has a higher percentage of IDing the good stuff.
And a clarification if you could….. you say you wished Garrett would make a concentric like their 4.5”…… I read that as they already make one? Or its an older no longer available coil???

I too prefer concentric coils Monte. Much more accurate, easier pinpointing and have always enjoyed the 4.5 sniper coil. And that little coil ain't no slouch either. Blow as an air-depth test using it on the ACE and AT Gold. An air test will show the maximum potential of a target depth.

"Ronstar" ... I like a good-working mid-size coil such as the 5X9.5 Sharpshooter on your F75, the 5X8 MGC on my F75+, and the 5X8 Ripper on my Apex. All of them can provide reasonably 'correct' VDI readouts in a cleaner environment. But if a masking metal object is nearby the bigger size can encounter some masking madking if targets are too close. The VDI and audio Tone ID can be skewed.

I wish Garrett would make a small 4.5" Concentric for the Apex. It was wrongly named or associated with the Ace series in my opinion as well as with many at Garrett. It isn't an Ace
or an AT series model. They have their own 4.5. Shooter coils and I just wish Garrett would make a small Concentric for the Apex.
