Sensitivity Survey

Ric,
You make a good point. However, a couple of things to consider. I would guess the individuals you mentioned probably spend more time hunting than most of us, but I don't know that for a fact. I think another factor to consider would be how much old silver is everyone finding. For instance, I found 86 silvers this year. Only nine of those were 1946 or more recent. In fact 52 of my 86, or over 60% of all my silvers, were 1920 or older. I would be interested in knowing some of you other guys' percentages of 1920 and older vs 1921 and newer. I'm referring to silver coins only, and including war nickels. I would think the Eastern hunters should have a better percentage of older coins than the rest of us. By the way, I always hunt in manual. I think Charles(NY) explained it quite well in his post. HH, if you are able.

by switching to Semiautomatic and it always comes through loud and clear. I don't know if I'm wasting my time with the manual sensitivity or not. There may have been one or two that I would have missed not sure.

We don't count war nickels.
Don't know the percentages, but I know I have more barbers than rosies.I do have a ton of mercs though.
Golddigger has tons of old silver,I think everytime I have hunted down there with him he has pulled nice seateds and always a few barbers.I am sure he will post his count of each variety at the first of the new year.
They all have full time jobs but me.BiLL only hunts on the weekends.
I am trying to start a war or anything,I just think that Auto 32 is not the foul demon it is made out to be. And like I said before, even if the consensus is that manual will go deeper,I still think 32Auto is a good place for a new Explorer to start out at to learn their detector. It just doesn't lose very much depth.I have seen too many deep coins found in 32 Auto,I know better.I think I agree with Jim and Charles, that you should go over areas with different settings. But that should apply to them as well! They should go back over the same spots they pounded in Manual,in Auto.If they report back that they found nothing I will be satisfied, surprised, but satisfied.
I only started using Auto probably around May or June and I do switch to Manual when the ground permits me to,at least how I like my detector to run.Plus on deep iffies I do switch over to manual to see if I can get a better signal and it almost always nulls out.Like I said, this spring I am going to start using manual more to see.

It's important to note that I run iron mask -16 nearly always so I don't experience nulls. I can see a sens too high nulling quite a lot on iron with the iron mask turned up, maybe thats the difference. But would semi-auto back off the sens too much??? I like controlling how much sens and knowing how much a condition will take.
I'm heading back to a spot today with mega iron plus some underground power lines tossed in just for fun. I'll give semi-auto a try, I'm going to test this theory of good targets vanishing when switching to manual and vise versa.

Charles, I run in 32 auto because the detector will pick the optimum sensativity for the given area. If you was to run say 24auto then the detector will run the optimum sens. up to 24 but not above that setting. So 32 auto will let the detector pick the best setting for the situation up to 32. This is just my reasoning and it seems to work just fine here in Central IL. If you are running manual setting, the detector does not have the option of raising or lowering the sens. for a given area. Then you as the operator have to make the decision and hope you made the right one. This is just one of the reasons that the exp. Has all of these options. What works here may not work there. I use what works for me in my area.
