Sensitivity -How much is too much?

Is the sensitivity a true 1-32 variable or is it in ranges like 1-5 5-10 10-15 etc.?
How much depth will I sacrifice if I run at 22 to be more stable vs. 25-26 where I false a little too much. Being a newbie to the Explorer I think I tend to run the sensitivity too high. Will I get those deep 10" dimes with the lower sens. settings?
I know, You have to pass the coil over them first!!!! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=""> But if I do, will I pick them up???

I hit many 9"ers when set at around 20 sensitivity, 8"s was average, and did hit several 10"ers.

the sens increases in increments of one, from 1 to 32, depth depends not only on the setting but the ground conditions. I pretty much always have my sens above 20 mostly keeping it 22-24 in iron and up to 28 in cleaner ground. should be no problem getting 10 inches on a dime with sens even down to 16 in cleaner neutral soil.. what I do instead of turning down the sens is switch to auto to check signals in trash, sometimes the auto setting piks it up clearer and sometimes manual does, but for the most part it sees it in both modes, one just might see it easier...Jim

I always run my sensitivity at 32 auto this way I know it will set it self automaticaly so I am always getting the best depth. Last week I was detecting a celler hole and after about two hours and two Butlers Rangers buttons I realized my machine was set on manual. I switched back to auto and went over the same area and found 4 more Butlers Rangers buttons. This area was only about 20 feet square so I know I didn't just miss them in manual. When I was in Hartford I never took my machine out of 32 auto and I was digging coins at 15" deep.

I played around with sensitivity quite a bit on the deep hits... and didn't really notice an appreciable difference in small changes of the sensitivity setting.... targets seemed to read the same whether it was set at 18 or 24. Now on the faintest signals, turning up the sensitivity made marked improvement in the repeatability of the signal, but if the sensitivity was set too high, the signal was lost due to the background falsing masking it out. Running in Auto 32 like Richard does is a good idea, if you are not comfortable or familiar with the sensitivity. I personally can tolerate marginal chattering and falsing, so I run the sensitivity a little higher in Manual than what the Explorer would settle on if it were in Auto. It may not make much difference in detection depth, but it does force you to go slow and analyse your signals more... thus you find that you dig more iffy signals than if you were just tooling along with nothing to listen to but a steady threshold. And many of those iffy signals turn up some nice, unexpected finds. HH, Mike.
