Selling gold items....

John(Tx)

New member
Took a few rings down to the pawn shop that gives the best deals in town. With the price of gold at $1579.90, they wanted to give me $600. Thinking about sending them to ARA since they pay a little better. Question, how do you guys send in these items, in a small box or one of those bubble wrap envelopes? I would think to insure it also, right? For the ones that have used this company, I know you must fill out Section 2 Applicant Information but do you also fill out Section 3 General Business Information and where it says Acknowledgement and Agreement, do I just sign this, do I need an Authorized Representative signature? I appreciate any info. Thanks, John
Thanks, John

OK here is the scoop

NO form to fill out. Send a letter stating how you want your money, they give lots of options including 90% advance and the 8% later. Go to this website:

http://www.dendritics.com/scales/metal-calc.asp

They can tell you on the phone their many options for payment. They also remove the stones and send them back FREE.

Fill out how many grams of each weight of gold. For the discount -2% ARA takes and you will get a SEMI accurate account of what you should expect back.

In the letter to ARA make sure you say your a metal detectorist and you found them on THIS site.

I don't send insured. Nobody has stole it yet. I send it priority mail which takes 2 days for them to get. Call them FIRST if you have ANY questions at all.

PM me if you have any problems please. My last week settlement was a bit over 2200.00 for 85 grams of 10K and 14K. I just got the last of today. I am shy of 4 grand by a couple hundred. LOL already have that in the last two weeks of playing. Good luck.

I normally put mine in one of those small PO boxes. I seperate each by K and take a picture. Everyone makes mistakes...... ARA isnt in differant and they will make it right IF you can prove what they got. Your decission on insurance.... i do even thou i dont have anything in it. All i do is a letter as mentioned, the expect pawn shops and fly by night businesses to fill out the form. Once you have an account it even easier. They have different melting schedules..... so you may get your money back in more than one check. The remove all stones on the gold and send them back weighted and discribed in CW. Excellent guys to deal with.

ARA requires NO tax id, no ssan, Nothing but a name and address for a check or a name and routing number and account number for direct deposit. They have mailed checks to my mortgage, my daughter and my best friend. As long as you tell them who you want the money sent to they will do it.

I have NO idea about insurance. I never get it. I send it priority mail 2 days and they have always got it. I guess thats a question for the post office.

Any more rumors please feel free to IM me.

I thought ARA required a tax id #.

Like scubadetector indicated: In a note that you send with your package, tell them how you want payment (options are on the web page or call them). Tell them what you want done with recovered stones (options are on the web page or call them). Tell them that you metal detect and found out about them through this forum. If you do that, they have not required an ID number.

I heard it's useless to insure the rings unless you have a receipt for buying them somewhere?

I insure the packages I send in. Documented value is what is important. Since I don't have the package appraised, I log the weight and composition of what is in the package in a spread sheet (sorted by 10k, 14k, 18k, sterling, coin silver), take a picture or two or three and document the spot price of gold and silver on the day I shipped. That way, if the package gets there and has nothing in it, I have records to show that what was shipped was insured at a reasonable value. With documentation, there should be no reason to reject a claim on failure to deliver an intact package. So far I have not had to file a claim; but am prepared if needed.

Just a thought for you guys looking to get the best deal at a local shop. We all know ARA is awesome but just the same I figured I'd see what I could do locally armed with ARA's prices on a gold ring I just found this morning.

I just headed up to a local silver/gold buyer who runs a coin shop. His prices are very fair for a local shop, paying much more than those cash for gold/silver places. Anyway, I told the guy about ARA and how they only skim 2% of the day's market price for gold. He couldn't believe it and said if they do give that price they must require large quantities. I told him about the forums and how all the metal detecting guys go through ARA because they are the best price around.

So he gave them a call and confirmed what I told him and that it doesn't require a minimum quanity of gold. He got off the phone and said I'll match their price for you, and will match their price for any future gold you bring me for that day's stock market price of gold ARA is paying! He said just don't tell anybody I'm doing that locally. I said no problem, because his normal prices are still very fair for the locals anyway. I told him I'd spread the word though that he's the best local shop for highest prices on gold and silver compared to other local shops, which he is.

So not only did he match ARA's price, but it also saved me the shipping cost. I tried to tell him to pay me less since he's saving me the shipping but he refused and said he's still making money, so he must have a buyer that only takes 1% instead of 2% like ARA maybe? So now I've got a local shop that matches ARA, saves me the shipping cost, and I don't have to wait a week for the check to come in the mail. Happy about that.

If you guys are skitish about using the mail (don't know why you would be though) or just can't wait for a check in a week or so to come, then arm yourself with a few prinouts of the day's market price of gold, the weight of your ring and it's value at it's weight/K, subtracting 2% like ARA. Show your local shop the printout and say you'll take say $10 less than that even because you'd be paying shipping, and see what kind of price they can give you. I doubt most shops will even play ball like that (especially those heavily advertised cash for gold places that you are lucky to get 30% of the value of your gold from), but if you find a small shop with the owner running the store like this guy's maybe you'll have a winner on your hands.

PS- Don't ask me the name of the shop I went to, as I gave the guy my word I wouldn't tell others he's matching all my future gold rings with ARA's prices. His prices are very fair anyway so the locals aren't getting ripped off compared to your typical cash for gold/silver stores.

Critter,
I actually tried that approach with a local jeweler who I consider a friend, not a close friend but a friend, and the best he would do was 85% of melt. Of course he drives a two year old Maserati and I drive a Honda Civic with about 190,000 miles on it ... but then that doesn't affect the price of gold, does it?

Glad you worked out your deal.
Cheers,

The best I could do in my area was 60%, that is why is use ARA, could probably do a little better in Houston than around here but I hate to drive in Houston.....HH

BAD NEWS If it's true?! Somebody in the views forum just said that ARA is no longer accepting gold from the public?! Say it ain't so! If that's true then there goes my good local deal I had going, and now we need to find another mail order place that can come close to ARA's prices. If it is true then what's the next best deal out there, Midwest?

I just called ARA a couple days ago they told me they no longer do business with the public... sup with that?

and we aren't able to get the kind of local deal that Critterhunter has then I think a good idea might be to clean it up really good and sell it for jewelry at a flea market or some similar setup or either selling it to somebody who does that kind of thing. With gold so high jewelry has to be really expensive so maybe they will pay more than pawn shops and gold buyers. I'm not one to sit around all day at a flea market but I'm not willing to give my stuff away either.

if you have sold them gold/silver in the past thay will still buy it from you also if you tell them you are from this fourm you can sell to them

I hope that's true, because I've sold to ARA in the past. Just hope my local deal is still going on then because I'll have to get ARA to give me the info to show the dealer locally if he can't call ARA on the spot to find out the day's number.

I havent sold to them before but I did mention the forum but she said it didnt matter they wasnt dealing with the public anymore. So I have to take my silver to the coins shop they only gave me 70% :(

NOT TRUE. They have NOT changed their policy concerning metal detectorists. My friend Kevin just sent them a batch on friday and I send them gold and silver every two weeks. Did you get a name of a person you talked to? I have been told by the OWNERS that they will notify me if and when thier policy changes concerning detectorists.

Call back and talk to Shawn or one of the owners Nikki. PM me if you have more information you want to add and I can call them.
