SEF 12x10

so what's the consensus....good to replace stock coil with? Any additional benefits....thought i read somewhere it may be about 1" deeper. Thinking about buying one....already have the 6 x 8 sef and like it. Let me know what you guys and gals think.

I am glad you posted about this. I am playing with the idea of getting a 10x12 SEF, 12x15 SEF or Sunray X-12. The answers to your question will directly affect my choice as well. HH -Marc

Had one and didn't notice much difference between the Procoil except the weight, which feels like 5lbs on the end of the pole.

I have not done field tests or garden tests between the procoil and the 12x10, but based on hunting the same sites with both, I would say that the 12x10 does give you an inch more depth then the procoil. One other thing that I noticed, is I can run the sensitivity higher without falsing or chattering then the procoil. I now use the 12X10 as my everyday coil. There is a difference in weight, but I can comfortably swing the 12X10 on all day hunts without an issue. I did extensive research myself before buying the 12X10 and almost every field test that I read gave the 12X10 SEF an edge over the procoil.

The 12X15 is heavy, so heavy, that I could swing it for only about 45 - 60 mins before I had to take it off and put my 12X10 back on. I bought a swingy thingy which I am going to put on this week and give the 12X15 another try. I will be hunting the beaches of Duck, NC for a few days this week and would be happy to post my results of the 12X15 when I get back.

I've never used the Sunray X-12, so I cannot give you an opinion on that coil. I've read field tests about it and it's performance is on par with the 12X10 according to most of the tests that I've read, however, it is lighter then the 12X10.

Hope this helps.

I'd be real interested in how that 12 x 15 works. Both on the beach and with the Swingy Thingy. With my shoulders I can't even swing the Pro Coil without it so I have not moved up to a bigger coil. If the Swingy Thingy can handle the weight well I might have to think about the 12 x 15 or a WOT.

This is a tough question - from what I've read over the last year, year and a half - it's split up the middle - some like the stock coil better - some prefer the S.E.F 10 x 12.
It's similar to who makes a better truck - Ford or Chevy ?

I guess the only way to tell for sure would be to have two machines - running on the same settings and swing both over a group of the same targets.

I can't say for sure that the S.E.F. goes deeper - but I really like mine. The S.E.F is approx. 5 to 6 oz. heavier than the stock coil and since this weight is out on the tip - your can really feel it.
But I can say this - I dug a 1945 Silver War Nickel at a measured 10 inches yesterday and I got clear enough target I'D. numbers - that I was almost positive it was a Nickel before I dug it.

I will post my results of how the coil did and what it felt like using the Swingy Thingy. The beach is pretty sanded in right now, so I'm anticipating that most targets will be pretty deep. Should be a good test.

Well I decided to go ahead and order the coil....that place who shall remain nameless had them on sale for 139 and I couldn't pass it up. I'll give you guys a full report after I use the coil for a bit.

What about the new detech 13" ultimate coil , i know they just came out but made by the same folks that make the12x10 and the great little 8x6 that myself and a lot of folks have on here . it weighs less than the stock coil , that may be hard to beat i ordered one last week on ebay and will see which i like better that or my russie coil that weighs more than the stock coil

You said you ordered the new 13" Ultimate? If so, can you please post your results with it. I was wondering if anyone had both the 12x10 SEF and 13" Ultimate and which one did better. Anyone out there that has done this comparison?

Sure will , it was mailed last week from bulgaria . for the size and weight and coming from a legit company it should be good, if you want a large coil. i read somewhere else about aftermarket coils and what minelab ok`s. sunray and detech are both companys that pass the requirements for a aftermarket product. the nel is not. i have one and will see how each compares. again yesteday i went to the worst trash area ever, my etrac went at times for a few minutes with no threshold, my 8x6 still could run at 30 manual where the procoil was 19 , oh yeah found hardly nothing though. if this rolls over to the 13" it will be a beast

they do but this one is just out and they dont have it yet , have to order from overseas , i am sure they will have them sooner or later , one thing is the color they are bright white , kinda weird. they are on ebay cost is like 220.00 i think with shipping pretty much as the nel

that's where I got it from...but had a bad experience once and didn't want to say the name....lol. You gotta look for the social sell on these or they are still 179.

I sent Kellyco an e-mail and asked if they were going to sell the 13" Ultimate and did not get a response. Makes you wonder if there is something going on with the relationship between Detech and Kellyco.

i have the link for the social sale also it is still active on all the detech coils and works when you add to the cart i think i paid like 99.00 for my 8x6 , i emailed kellyco twice about two different things months apart and never got a answer either time

I'm there with you on this...I did end up buying the 12x15 from them even though I didn't want to. As stated here, use the social sale link and also use coupon code 12011 at the checkout to save an additional $5.00. Remember that it doesn't come with a coil cover, so you might want to consider one at the same time,,,about 14 bucks.

I for one will sing the SEF 10x12's praises. I've been hunting over a "hunted out" civil war encampment site for the past few weeks. I've been over this same ground with a 6x8 sef and my procoil and found bullets and relics with each. My 10x12 has added another few inches in depth and I'm finding more bullets and relics while other detectorists are finding nothing. Some of my finds have been 12 inches deep! Now granted, this site has had most all of the trash dug out of it and there's not much left but the deep stuff but the 10x12 will find it if you go slow and listen carefully. Of course I'm digging my share of deep rusted stuff and a few "ghost signals" but the good targets have more than made up for those.

I had the 10x12 SEF for about a week before I dumped it. I felt the pro coil is better and lighter. Has a much more consistent hit on targets throughout the sweep field ( toe to heel) which is very important.
