Seated dime laying on the ground

deep in the woods. Got a perfect dime signal, cleared away the leaves with my shoe getting ready to dig, saw this dime and simply picked it up. Didn't clean it, this is exactly how I found it. All the other targets were bullet brass shells and shotgun shells about 4" deep. Last year in this same woods I found an Indian head penny laying on top of the ground under the leaves but all the other old coins were 4-6" deep. I'll never know why some coins never sink. Normally I don't search too deep in the woods but about 4 months ago I dug a 1788 Half Real about 6" deep near where this dime was. I know there's more old coins there but they are really far apart and hard to find.

There is some woods near me we hunt and se find wheats under the leaves but no silver yet. I am sure its there but we have been digging deeper for it. Very nice find for sure. Don't find many of those critters

nice job on the seated dime! The best part: you didn't even have to dig! Hope you can get back to this spot as it sounds like a real good producer. Best of luck - Jim

I would have dug a little under that dime, just to see why it did not sink...Bet there was a flat rock under it???

HH,

Ken, here's a pic of reverse. Was found deep in the woods across River Rd. from Johnson park. I did a calculation of coil coverage at 6" deep based on my sweep speed and my average sweep width in a wooded place. In 1 hour I can cover 100% of a 70 Ft. x 70 Ft. area at 6" deep, allowing for narrower cone at that depth, switching back and forth between All Metal and Disc as I usually do. Would take me 50 hours to cover a 500 Ft. x 500 Ft. area 100% at 6" deep. Now, that wooded area is really big so only a very tiny portion was ever covered by me in the several times I was there. I know more old coins are there somewhere but gonna take a lot of time to find the next one, coins are very far apart. I never dug up any stones or rocks there, I don't think this coin was sitting on one. Dave

Bookendamo, You found a half real but no seated dimes, where do you live. I searched parks for jewelry for many years but when i started searching crop fields and woods I started finding the older coins. In 2012 I found 6 or 7 seated dimes and a seated quarter, all in old crop fields and in woods. Most coins from the woods were found closer to the road, not much of anything deeper in. Living in one of the 13 colonies is a big help too.

Ken, Would be glad to search with you again. But this woods needs a lot of time and lots of walking, I'm not recommending for that reason. But if you want to go its fine with me. A lot of the real big trees fell from huricane Sandy, was easier before. Look at Historicaeriels and see what you can make of the 1940 photos, seems to me there was plowed fields there, if so, should be old coins where the crop fields were. I did find a few farm machinery pieces. I'm waiting for the weather to get a little warmer, ground there is mildly frozen but diggable, right now the ice crystals makes it slippery. Dave

nice seated.....only one i ever found was in my own backyard and it was only a half inch deep ...... i have already found large cents on the surface in active farm fields , but in the woods that is very unusual.... not likely but could have been lost by a fellow detectorist ;

Absolutely was found in the woods, and many other old coins too. Back in the horse and buggy days things were a lot different then. Hunting in the woods was a common thing and I'd say most of the coins were lost by hunters as they dug in their pockets for another shotgun cartridge. I learned how great detecting in the woods is right here on this website.

sorry jabbo,, i reread my post..just for the record i dont doubt you found it in the woods on the surface...... i was merely suggesting that another detectorist could have found it recently and re lost it.... sorry for any misinterpretation..... congrats again...

Nice dime I know that area I think. Lots of area to hunt we should get a group hunt together.

Ken, when the ground thaws. I park in the parking lot by the animals in Johnson park and walk across the road.
