SE learning Problems

I have owned my Explorer for a couple of weeks. The more I use it the more I get confused. I am about to sell it and go back to my Whites MXT. I am going nuts with the constant dancing around of the digital readouts. I can sweep the coil several times over a coin and it will not give the right numbers until you stop swinging the coil and hold it off to the side of the coin. This happens swinging slow or fast. I am having trouble in most hunting deciding whether to dig or not. I get very few lock on's of items I am looking for. Is it me or my machine. Thank you in advance.

You will be much better off in the factory preset and the smartfind screen over the digital readouts.

Get a few hunts in while staying in the smartfind screen...and put quite a few hours on it to familiarize yourself with the multitude of sounds that are driving you nuts. Trust me...I've been there.

Just give it some time...and be very patient.

Titan,I went from a Whites M6-which is similar to a MXT,to an Explorer XS and I'm glad I did.I would also advise using smartscreen and give the cursor time to settle, but more important is to hunt by sound primarily. The key advantage to the Explorer is the tone will tell you so much-more than the screen.Once you learn the nuances of the music of the Explorer, there will be no going back for you.It would certainly help you if you hunt a couple of times with another Explorer user. HH

I sent you a PM.

I would also add...if even when in the factory presets...it seems unstable....drop both the gain a little.

Another step to "settle" it down some would be to switch to semi auto sensitivity.

That was the main key for me.

I personally like to hunt with high gain and sensitivity...so I get some falsing etc...and I definately don't recommend a new hunter hunting like that.

Semi auto sensitivity was what really "settled" down my SE. It made a world of difference on making it more stable for me.

I had the same issues when swapped from the DFX to the SE. After a few hours of getting used to the new sounds it became much easier. Give it some time before you give up on it.

I tank you for all of your help. I adjusted my sensitivity according to the method shown on the Minelab video forum and started to swing the entire coil completely across the target. This gave the detector time to lock on the digital signature. My faith is renewed in the SE.I had been just doing short sweeps over the target when I first heard it and it made the The Smart Screen jump around as well as the digital read out. swinging slow low and completely over the target made it work like it should. Thanks to all of your responses.

Slow is the key with the FBS machines. It took a while for me to beat that into my brain but I've done it and it works. Glad to hear you are getting the hang of it. Trust me you will not regret using the SE once you learn to use it. If you have any questions you can always ask anyone on here. I do all the time.

Titin ; giving your explorer up would be the worse thing you could do!! If you stick with it, you want be sorry!! Doug N.C.

Put your sens in manual , it sounds like its to high , start at at 23 ish !! then turn it down till it becomes more stable , if you have only had the explorer for a couple of weeks , you will find its a big learning curve .
Go into factory pre set mode , then put the sens in to manual, menu select , cross out nails , then noise cancel ,and away you go, your sens setting will depend on what soil your detecting over might be very mineralised where your at.
Stick with the explorer you wont be disappointed, I have had mine four years plus , they will increase your finds rate , but you need to know how to drive it ,takes time , good luck....................................Peter

A good way to adjust manual sens is:

Go to a clean area using semi auto sens at max (30ish)

Swing the coil in this clean area while standing still, move to manual sens

lower sens until the false signals stop, for stability lower with 2 more numbers then actually needed.

You can also use semi auto, there is nothing wrong with that. Put semi auto around 20-25 for starters. Gain at 6-7 for starters.

Increase it gradually as you feel more comfortable with the machine.

BTW if you are unsure of the sounds use the screen as a reference, listen to sound, look at screen then associate that cross-hair position with that sound.
Using higher volume settings seems to break up iron more in conduct sounds but adjustable headphones can compensate for that increase while you still get that broken high sound from iron. Silver is more "clear" signal wise.

Hope this helps,
Eu

Imo best way to learn the se is to set it up like this to get the most out of the detector.

sens 20-22
thresh down untill you can barley hear it with head phones on.
hit menu
In volume turn gain down to 6 .when IN pin point you be able to tell if the target is deep or shallow. If you go higher like 8 a deep traget will sound like shallow target.
hit back
In tone
th tone I like it max at 10 makes it little easyer tell targets apart.
variabliity I like 8 some like 10. 8 good enough for me though.
Leave limits alone.
hit back
hit sound then change it from conduct to ferrous.
hit back to t he main menu and now hit select.
In select hit clear. Now you are in all metal mode and Will hear all the targets in the ground. At first it will drive you nuts lol. But once you get hte hang of this set up it well pull out some great finds. Just listen for high tone and watch digital readings.

Also on deep targets if it's rolling numbers in digital hit detect to change to smart find. If it rolloing just under in iron and back up to coin range. If IT's DEEP DIG! At first you might dig few nail but once you get the hang of it you be pulling out some good finds that other detector has pass up.

If you discrimination you will pass up targets becuase of the nulling. In all metal chance of that happing is less. I pulled out some great finds that whites dfx/mxt/xl pro pass up.

I aquired my Se from my good friend who is a long time DFX user.He tried it for about 3 weeks and decided he couldnt figure it out(god was i lucky!!).Since he sold it to me ,he has had the pleasure of watching me walk behind him digging up deep targets and targets surrounded by trash.Give the minelab a chance and u will not be dissapointed..Take care

I have had the SE for about three months.l get out several hours a couple of days a week. I have found nothing very deep, maybe 5 inches on a coin. I have tried several setups to no avail. Most of my hunting is old farm houses and there seems to be an abundant amount of iron. My Sens is usually 7-11 manual higher on auto at best. It is very hard to find anything deep at those number I know. I use deep on, all metal, gain 8-9. When I use this setup i get a ton of foil or alum that has a very high pitch and is upper right all the way to the top. I have iron mask set with no black on the screen also.
Don't get me wrong, I have found a couple IH's and silver coins, but nothing is very deep at all. I am not sure if I even know what a deep coin signal even sounds like.
I hope I have explained what I am having problems with.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Denny

your sensitivity it too low. the factory preset is 16 and you should be able to set it higher, try a higher setting and when you find a coin lower the sensitivity and you will see how much depth you can lose.

i have the xs so i don't know if the threshold is the same. can you not get the sound back by raising the threahold level.

i haven't tried hunting in all-metal but i wouldn't think that higher sensitivity would affect the threshold in all-metal.

The only way to get a threshold is to lower the sensitivity to around 10 or lower. I swing slow and low but never seem to get any deep coins although buddies I hunt with do, and have no problem with the sensitivity
