Saw something today.... very disturbing.

I've never had a problem helping others learn the tricks of the trade. Next time don't hold your breath until you get online. Get your rig out, walk over, introduce yourself, start comparing signals. Get the kid's interest. Dig the next couple targets, the correct way, explaining why without being condescending or confrontational.

I ran into about 10 new md'ers this year. We all had good times and they all know why they dig neat holes and use the best gear now.

Most memorable was two kids about 10 years old that went to a park early on this summer. A newbie that had been working with me was there and helped them use their "cheap" BH to it's advantage. Long story short one of their first finds was a Walker at 7" inches. Talk about stoked and hooked!

A few days later we were there and they came running up with their rig and this huge flat shovel, as big as they were. Well I gave them one of my good trowels and we went over recovery and restoration. Drove by the park and hit it more than few times after that, knowing these two were hitting every thing that went beep and you know something? Very good looking ground.

Don't knock someone you won't stop to help out, they might turn out to be good hunting friends in the end and you never know, maybe they have access to a site or two you've only dreamed about.

ElginTim,
Thanks for the really nice post! It is an encouragement to all of us!

Best Regards,

We mostly do what we think is right at the time. It is easier to work out what we should have done or might have done differently when we have had time to think about it, seek other opinions and re-evaluate the situation.
To re-state: Elton, you did what you thought was right...no one should criticize you for that, and I dont think anyone has.
I think, and thought as I was reading your post, that I would have approached the guy, and in a firendly way, let him know there is a better and more appropriate way to hunt for treasure in parks. His son has to learn as well, because if we let dad's inappropriate actions slide, then in 5 or 10 years we have another digger (son) doing the wrong thing as well. It is easier to assess things in hindsight, and this is in no way meant as a criticism. It's great to see someone who cares for children as much as you clearly do.
