Sad to say the era of "breakthroughs" has ended........

You may be surprised at the breakthroughs.Yet still working within the boundaries of basic radio waves transmit and receive.............. I keep thinking somewhere in the near future that Satellite
tech will come into play using GPS and instant interpretation of targets processed through the systems..................LOL.I'm still waiting for a built in clock on the screen...

Or a detector that can be programmed for different hunting scenarios via wireless to a main computer programmer at the manufactures... Science Fiction ?? Not as far off as we might think !!!

I'm looking forward to this. HaHa a clock would be nice also

haha, yup, you'll be the envy of all your friends when hunting together, when you use that app. on your android phone, instead of a detector, eh? haha. But I think that app. only works with iron objects, not conductive targets, if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Robert..... because I'm relatively new at this hobby which my question will verify, but here goes anyway. In you post you say:

I'm waiting for a metal detector that works like a fish finder echo sound technology why not for in the ground? like sonar?

Here is one of the problems. There are LAWS on the books that regulate how much transmit and recieve power a detector can have. NO idea why. BUT there is NO law on the books about transmit and recieve UNDERWATER. I tried to find out WHY somebody won't make a super underwater machine. The answer I got is because people would use it on the ground.

LOL maybe some would break the law. BUT maybe the law needs to be changed. I would love to dig down 2 - 3 foot in the sand myself!! I think a lot of other water hunters feel the same way. With all the new kinds of batteries, Wearing battery packs as a weight belt, seems like someone could design a super water machine. One that would work with a salt mode and a fresh water mode. Wish I knew more about electronics!!

Anyway we can dream!! Good Luck out there

Then buy a Xp Deus and you got your time displayed in the screen.

Woodchuck: this subect has come up many times before: If fish finding sonar is so accurate, that you can even tell the type of fish, etc... .from great distances, then ...... doh ...... why not detectors to do something similar, at a mere 7 or 8"

But the problem is, water present absolutely no impediment. Sonar travels great distances un-impeeded, till it bounces off something. Unlike solid ground, where the entire component is ....... doh .......... a solid object. Thus if you tried your fish-finder sonar on solid ground, you would get utterly nowhere, even if the fish were only buried 1" deep in the ground! haha Therefore solid ground presents an entirely different problem of physical science. Now if perhaps we were all detecting coins in the air (with the aim of your device straight out, so that background ground isn't in the scope of the signal), then sure, you could go deeper, tell shape perhaps, etc.... So this is apples to oranges comparison.

Scuba, I too have heard this laws thing. It's simply not true. It's been disproven before. There is a point of diminishing returns on how deep you can go, because the power needed to punch XX inches deeper becomes exponentially greater, the deeper you go. For example, the signal power needed to go 2" verses 3" deep, on a given target, might only need to be a given percentage more power, to get that additional 1". However, the power needed to go 11" verses 12", you need massively more power and precision to gain THAT addittional 1" So it's the laws of physics coming in to play, and not some FCC rules or laws.

I read that in the W&E Treasure magazine by their expert a while ago. So you need power? Why not a weight belt of batteries? Any diver would be comfortable with that AND with the newfangled batteries that are out there, I am sure that wouldn't be a problem. Something just isn't adding up.

I am not saying to add power to an existing machine. develop a new machine that can handle lots of power. Underwater the land mass isn't as packed as it is on ground. You can sink 3 foot in some of the muck. And a few inches in the sand in a lot of places. And make a FRESH water machine.

Hi Ivan, I too started detecting way back (69) and agree with your thoughts on the "breakthroughs". For "whatever reasons" there have already been some true breakthroughs come about that were either not followed up on or simply laid aside instead of being put to use as they very well should have. been. Those "whatever reasons" usually have to do with $, but not always.If/when, possibly one, or more, of those laid aside breakthroughs is ever manuvered over some of those "whatever reasons" and put forth for us for the reasonable $. I believe they can call it whatever kind of breakthrough they wish ..Most likely some of us will recognize the "breakthrough"(new tech/old tech) for what it really is..Now that would be cool and should make us all happy !! I'm not holding my breath though, nor do i believe any of us should. I just try to enjoy every hunt I am able to make now, and be thankful I have a bunch of "breakthroughs" other than that ole Garrett Sidewinder BFO, in my closet and hanging all over my wall.LOL,Shucks, I'd still be digging if all I had was a stick to poke in the ground! HH, Charlie
