Greg I agree that you should do what you want. I don't know who questioned your finds so I don't know if they were serious or just putting you on. I was going to update my website and noticed I had found 5645 coins by Nov. 28th of last year, for a total of $404.63. This was close to what your goal is.
The truth is most of the older guys in the hobby just aren't interested in clad counts. I did it for the fun of it last year. By the end of the year I got bored with denomination count and was only keeping the total. This year all I do is total the receipts from the bank when I cash in. I've been detecting since 1999 and I don't get the same thrill from finding a quarter like I used to.
Now I would rather find a few more gold rings or interesting relics. Did you ever notice a new guy will post his finds for a hunt and it's $2.25 in clad. He's happy and he should be. Then after a while guys only post their rare or good finds. There are two detecting GURUS who's opinions and advise I totally respect and I have never seen them post one single find. Maybe they did at one time, but remember they were detecting before the internet, and I guess after 40 years of detecting they have seen it all. I also notice while giving advise they have never belittled me or others.
With that said here is my clad from 3 hours of hunting the high school today.
