Recession detectors... What 'mid-priced' detectors you have used

I currently use a Xterra 70 most of the time but if I had to choose a less expensive detector it would be one of the other Xterras or a Whites Eagle II sl90.

Recession detectors , well my latest purchase did have a budget limit ($275). Hillis had a good post about purchasing ones next detector and I applied principals he talked about. One thing I look for, is a detector that looks like fun to use for what I was wanting to do. So, using fun to operate, good reviews, and under a budget I was able to get a :fisher: CZ-5. I like this machine, didn't break the bank. A classic like a 68 Camero....

I could do very well with just my Tesoro Eldorado

If I were trying to stay in the less than $400 range without giving up performance then I'd buy a used older Sovereign model. Any of those are almost as deep as the current GT model and many say they are deeper than anything on the market, regardless of price. I bought me a used GT with meter for I think $650 and an very happy with it. Deepest machine I've ever used.

I bought a used Compass magnum a month or so ago. That darn thing walks and talks like crazy. Yes, it is alot more labor intensive to use, but it works very well.

What is mid priced? $300 to $700? I have an Xterra 705 and just picked up an Explorer SE for $700. Jury is still out, but the thing will dig coins out of the nails that two of us had missed. 1935 and '27 Wheats.

Depends on what a guy wants to hunt I think.

The wife uses a White's IDX pro. That's the only detector she has ever used, and based on her hunting success (she out-detects me as often as not) I doubt she'll ever want to change. In the years she has used her IDX I have used a Tesoro, an XLT, a Sovereign Elite, a V3i, and a couple different pulse machines. The Tesoro was the only one in the same price range as her IDX (I think it was an Eldorado (??).

If you buy a used machine you can find a good value. I would recommend you get a non-motion function on the detector for pinpointing (not essential, but a big help sometimes) and get a machine that uses a lighter power supply source (i.e., 9V or AA batteries instead of C or D cells). Your back will thank you for that. Troy, Garrett, Whites, Tesoro, Minelab, Fisher...stick with a name brand machine you probably won't go wrong. And just to be on the safe side (my personal preference) I'd buy a Whites machine (no, I don't think they are necessarily superior to any of the other comparable machines) because of the way White's Electronics supports its customers with very reasonable charges and fast turnarounds for repairs. You could buy an XLT, or QXT, or Classic, or IDX in fair condition quite reasonably - and know that if something wasn't quite right, Whites would repair the machine - and make it like a new one in function - for a very reasonable amount of money.. 'nuff said.

The average hunter wouldn't know a Wilson as its a small company and mainly sell overseas..Newer Wilson models are not my cup of tea but Wilson Coin and Relic is user friendly depth demon that is easily comparable on depth to major models and yep used an Explorer and CZ among others..Roughly 15-20 years old and can easily hang in there with the big boys for deep silver..Had one when they first came out and now found a mint closet queen reasonably priced..

I am pleased with both my Tesoro detectors. Neither is considered a high priced unit, but both perform like them!

Pretty well the entire Tesoro line is mid-priced. They also offer exceptional performance and quality for the dollars spent.
