Received the X-70 today, Very impressed!

Old California

New member
Steve in Alaska sold me his X-Terra 70 with two coils, Has a low serial number (10) and in very good condition.

I've been wanting to compare the X-70 against my T-2 and several other detectors for different types of detecting, So far for the short period I used the detector today it really has been very impressive.

Starting off, Love the threshold and it sort of operates similar to the Explorer only with faster user friendly features. The X-70's all metal tone ID resembles the Explorer's Ferrous mode feature with iron masking set at 16-, Another excellent feature for those wanting to hear it all with tone ID.

Later in the evening at home, I tested four different detectors using a small gold nugget and three out of the four easily responded to the gold nugget. The only detector not getting a signal was the SE Explorer which isn't a surprise, Both the Explorer and Sovereign don't fare well with very small conductive targets.

Using the 5X9" DD coil with the Terra X-70, It easily responded to the small gold nugget at 3.5" inches and at 4" inches the signal tapered off, Same as the MXT and T-2, They too responded with the same sensitivity as the X-70. Of course, these are back yard testing results and searching in mineralization gold hunting grounds would be the proper place.

Now, Need to get the 10.5" DD coil for the X-70 and use this coil for deep silver at the old parks. If all goes well, The Terra X-70 will replace my MXT and SE Explorer keeping the T-2 for serious relic hunting.

Hi mate hows it goin! Good on you for trying out the X-terra 70 Im sure you will constantly cream yourself just like me nearly everytime you use the XT70. A 1 gram nugget at 3.5inches....impressive. My question to you is did you use the prospect mode when testing the 9x5" eliptical coil? Just curious. By the way I have had great success on beaches with mine using the DD 10.5" coil you wont be disapointed on its performance.
Cheers!

Hi Paul,

Please do let us know how the X-70 handles the deep turf silver out there. Tip: try to hunt after a good soaking rain. When conditions allow it to be run at high sensitivity settings and remain stable its one of the deepest single frequency detectors I have used in damp/wet ground. Don't trust the TID just go by the tone and be sure to compare the stock concentric coil against the DD on some deep (full arrows) targets and see which works best. Tracking on all the time works best here on the deep ones. I have tried and tried to get it to track out deep coins and unless you really tighten the sweep right over the target there is no effect on the signal. Oh yeah, don't be fooled by the audio either, those deep ones will sound out pretty loud at times. Go by the depth arrows.

Thanks Nugget,

I'll be getting the 10.5" DD coil for park hunting, Then lower kHz should hit high conductive coins stronger than the higher kHz 9x5" elliptical DD coil.

When testing out the small 1 gram nugget on the detectors including the Terra X-70, I was using the prospect mode and even tried the all metal mode. The prospect mode had a little more sensitivity over the regular disc and all metal mode and could detect the nugget further away from the coil, The prospect mode will be a feature I'll be trying out when relic hunting.

On vacation next week so will be using the X-70 for different purposes, Hopefully, Gold jewelry and some old relics and coins will surface.

Thanks again and looking forward to viewing your post with the X-70,
Paul (Ca)

Hi Tom,

Once I get the 10.5"DD coil, I'll surely keep you guys and gals updated with how the X-70 operates here in California's older parks on deep silver.

Today, I noticed it operated smooth with no stability issues at an area we have to reduce our sensitivity on most detectors. Just like you said, Can be run at high sensitivity settings and remain stable. Amazing detector, She's looking prettier by the minute.

I caught on quickly with the deeper signals reading higher, So I'll be going by audio and arrows not so much relying on the TID with the deeper signals. Allot of detectors respond the same so I'll get accustom to relying on the audio and the higher TID quickly.

Can already see it's a good detector, A fun detector too :)

Cheers mate! Thanks for the feed back! Hope you go well on your hunt and look forward to seeing some of your photo's posted here on the forum :)..Just to let you know there are two video's on the X-terra 70 showing on http://www.youtube.com/
If you have a good internet connection the movies are a smooth flowing. Might give you a few tips on how to set up your XT70.
Cheers mate!

The noise cancel always worked well for me in areas my Fishers were bothered by rf and local powerlines. The 3 Khz coil picked up a little more interference but not bad redeucing the sens a couple numbers usually cured it. There are none of the big distributiion lines around here so can't comment on those.

When you get around a lot of old iron pay close attention to the amount of nulling/iron tones. If its constantly nulling or chirping on the edge of the iron you have to turn down the sensitivity. Turning down the sens a couple numbers seems to cut down the amount of iron it sees and allows the good stuff to break thru. Its not like the MXT/T2 which can be run cranked up and still pick out the good stuff in iron!

Yes, please do post any info you can on T2 comparisons. I have a T2 and I'm also in California and would love to hear your results.

EC,

Where abouts in California. I lived in Orange Co. for over 40 years. When I come back to visit family I would like someone to hunt with.

Thanks Tom for the tips,

I hit an old iron laced site today using the all-metal feature and 2 tone setup, I had to lower the sens like you said to reduce some chirping.

I do enjoy this type of setup for searching older areas laced with iron, I prefer to hear it all and with the X-70 using this setup helps make searching in iron a joy.

I agree with you the T-2 and MXT can operate with higher sensitivity at these type of older areas, Not putting down the X-70 but I can see it has a little slower recovery speed from the T-2 and MXT and needs a slower sweep swing when searching in iron, The iron masked signals don't jump out loud and clear as do with the MXT and T-2. Still, The X-70 can still be a good productive relic detector as long as the sweep swing is slowed down and a reduced sensitivity.

Over all in this short period of using the X-70 Terra, I really like it and plan on using the Terra for different types of hunting next week while on vacation. Searching for gold jewelry and relics will be on the top of list, Two totally different types of hunting.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Hello Eddie,

You have an excellent detector, The T-2 is a fast unit especially in iron laced sites or heavily mineralized areas.

So far with using the X-70 I really do like the detector, Both the X-70 and T-2 both have an edge over the other for certain types of detecting. I do look forward to learning the Terra X-70, Next week will really take advantage of the time off and use the X-70 for different types of detecting.

Hello Glenn,

I live further North in the city of Visalia, I do have family near your area and search Santa Monica beach every few months. Maybe in the future we can meet and search near your area, Or meet at the beach.

Also, Sometimes several of us some from your area will meet at the beach for a day, Search both dry and wet sand.

Thaks Nugget,

I'll check out the video tomorrow after work, I appreciate the tips!

Hello Paul, I use several detectors (the DFX, The Quatro and the Exp II) but like my T2 best of all of them. However, I have noticed that many Exp SE users are installing the Exp II coil on the Exp SE. I was wondering what you make of this and have you done any test trying this coil change?

Nice picture Paul. Is that a Ryan next to the detectors? I've got a fetish for RC myself. just getting park flyer's at the moment.

Yup 2 tones and slow is the key and if using the concentric coil lots of overlap in the nasty stuff. The 7.5 Khz does help when after coins. Even with the lowered sensitivity it will retain some good depth on them. As you probably noticed the multi tone options do not work well for relic hunting. They were designed for coin hunting to give clean hits on round stuff and many times will give broken tones on irregularly shaped non-ferrous items. One mans trash is another mans treasure!

I hate to keep saying this Paul but, you really need to give the ID Edge a tryout for those old coins in iron. It will find the relics too. ;)

Tom

Hello Tom,

I'll keep using the Terra X-70 more often in the older sites next week and for surface clad and school gold jewelry, On vacation so I'll have time to use different detectors including the X-70.

Bill Ladd let me borrow his ID Edge for a while, Already started to use his Edge at some older areas but will try to build up a nice collection of finds and post them later next month. The Edge gets good depth for a little detector, Already noticed it will get stuff from underneath iron. My T-2 has me spoiled so breaking away from the T-2 and using different detectors is a treat, Wish I had more time to detect :)

Thanks again for the X-70 tips,
HH, Paul (Ca)

Hello Amador Al,

You have a nice collection of detectors, DFX, Explorer II, Quattro and T-2 are all good detectors.

I've not noticed any difference between the Explorer II coil or SE coil, Both detect about the same depth. Ralph said the coil windings are the same size on both coils only the older 10.5" housing is larger and heavier, I'm very pleased with the SE 10" coil, See no need to switch to a heaiver coil.

Hello Mick,

The plane is a different type, Not the fast slick Ryan plane but a trainer instead. It'll be ready for it's first flight by spring or early summer, RC flying is fun but can be costly. I guess metal detecting can be too.

Good luck with your RC flying, Hope each if your flights are accident free :)

Here's a larger pic of the plane,
