Really workin for it these days. Got harassed too

Man... I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here... I had a couple great looking houses that yielded absolutely nothing and the whole time I was harassed by nosey neighbors because the house I was hunting was an unoccupied house for sale. I had permission so it wasn't a big deal but this one lady in particular just kept insisting that I was there without permission. I gave the yard about an hour and left. Found another vacant house for sale so I hunted the curb (easement) NOT THE YARD. Guess who pulls up... This time she says... " hey... That's private property!" I politely said "no mam, this is public property" she looks at the yard behind me and says "well that's private and I don't think you have permission!" ... I replied "nope... That's why I'm not hunting it!" Then I asked her if she had anything better to do with her day than to harass me. She didn't like that :) she peeled out. So I called the cops and reported a wreck less driver in a residential area. I saw her pulled over at the exit of the sub as I was leaving. So I waived :) anyway... Today was rough. Managed to get some goodies though.

Those kind of people are always lurking somewhere, with nothing else to do, I'm sure your not the only one she has gone around the area bothering, no matter what they might be doing. way to handle it, you did good.

Thanks guys. I really am proud of myself for not coming un corked

Ain't that the truth Dr. Tones, For some odd reason the police frown on us when we leave these kind of people buried with just their heads sticking out of the dirt yelling for help. They got no since of humor. Way to go my friend, Gene

You handled it really well. Polite but not so passive that she could get away with her crap. Good going! The waving part is hilllarious!

Nice finds tones! We had the samething happen the other day, we were hunting easements of vacant homes the city is tearing down this year, and a code enforcement guy (meter maid) pulls up with his orange light and tells me we are on private property! I refused to leave and told him to go ticket a illegally parked car and to leave me alone, he calls the police and about 15min go by when they arrive! They told the guy he was in the wrong and asked him why he was harassing us, the cop told us we were fine and that he'd rather see two young men with a metal detector instead of selling drugs on the corner! The cop was awesome!! He couldn't believe this guy!!!

Way to go Tones , nice finds any day with silver is a good day .It will be much more common to get harassed in the future sad to say . sube

Haha, mean people do suck!

Brandon, nice finds, fortunately I have yet to be harassed by any onlookers. I'm sure its only a matter of time.

Tones, I had almost the exact opposite happen today. I was 'scouting' an area, saw a guy mowing the yard, and the house had a 'for sale' sign. So, I stopped asked him if he was the owner and he was, so I asked for permission to hunt and he said 'Knock yourself out"! Got 15 wheats, a '42 quarter and a 44 nickel.

Congrats! Yeah waaaay to many people with nothing to do but harrass others. Unfortunately this seems to be the attitude of MOST people, our hobby is under ATTACK! If we do not band together as one voice I'm afraid we will lose more and more public hunting grounds, I mean they can't stand to see us hunting PRIVATE property for Pete's sake so you know public property they will want to take away. I suggest each and everyone go to detectingrights.com and join. It is FREE and in looking at the site holds a lot of resources or all of us. I am in no way affiliated with this group other than I just recently joined myself.

Similar story. Hunting a older public school - a man pops out of a side door and angerly shouts "Hey, you can't be doing that here!" (scowling face). I looked up and said matter-of-factly, "Why?". He exclaimed "Because this is pubilc property!"

Really? You have to laugh, but I just smiled. So I told him this IS public property and detecting is not illegal on public property - "did you know that?" To which he replies "I knoooow thaaat! (like an infant) and as he ducks back into the building he exhales "Oooooh, NEVER mind" (door slam)

Whatever. But really most people I meet are nice or don't care.

We had a similar incident a while back on a property that just sold. a busybody showed up and starting the routine I informed her we had permission from the new owner and it really pissed her off!! I think partly because I knew about the sale before her lol she threatened to call the cops and we didn't budge. she finally stormed off but not without a slew of insults! My wife and I found over 65 coins but as usual she kicked my arse with a nice gold wedding band:cry:

Since we're all sharing 'busy body" stories:
I was given permission by my friend's son to hunt the property he was renting.
Everything was fine until a man and woman drove up in a pick up truck.
The woman marches up to me and clearly upset, asks if I make a habit of digging holes in people's yards.
I replied only if I was given permission to, then I asked her if she could find any of my 'holes'.
She couldn't, but demanded to know who gave me permission.
I mentioned the fellows name, and she says- " OH, he's my son-in-law !!!, I guess it'll be alright"....
Why some people have to assume you just HAVE to be doing something wrong is amazing !

Yeah, it's amazing how many people assume that we're crazy enough to walk into someone's yard and start digging without permission

Well here is a story that happened just last night. My buddy (he's an older guy but in great shape and could hold his own if he had too), were working some sidewalks (CITY SIDE) in an older part of town. We always try and stay away from the owners that keep that part nicely coiffed! We were having a great time finding all kinds of goodies when this guy with anger management issues came into the picture. He was sitting on his front step with his two small kids when I passed him (not detecting) and smiled and said hello. I turned a corner and detected awhile and then headed back to the cars. My buddy was coming up the hill across from this guy with nothing better to do. The guy asked me what my buddy's name was and I gave it to him not knowing anything special was to come of it. Well this little punk came up to my buddy and would have been in his face if he was tall enough. He was screaming about detecting on private property and my buddy stayed calm explaining it was City property. The guy was screaming at the top of his lungs (mind you his small kids were right across the street) and said it was disrespectful that his neighbor's "property" was detected on. My buddy asked me to hold his detector and I was thinking the worst!!! I work in a crime related job and didn't want to be a witness to an assault. I didn't take the detector and just kept saying "Let's go". I know my buddy was just preparing to protect himself. This guy continued to yell expletives at both of us as we got in our cars!!!! Scary stuff but a great hunt :)

The unavoidable problem with all of these run ins with the public is that they are going to talk about the incident to someone who is going to tell someone else and then eventually it will get to someone that can make changes where there is "no digging sidewalk strips, parks, etc. allowed". I am sure most of us have tried to defuse situations like this as best we can, but some people are simply not going to allow us a chance to explain what we are doing and why it isn't wrong to do so ( unless we have someone digging craters out there ). I am definitely not one to back down when a fight comes up, but when it comes to our hobby I suppose we all have to take the higher road and hopefully make a bad situation better. One thing I wouldn't do is leave the scene and admit defeat, unless I felt I was in danger.

The good thing is that it sounds like we are all pretty level headed folks just trying to enjoy our hobby and already doing the right thing

Years ago on Findmall, a Florida hunter posted that he was legally hunting a park one day when a guy with his young kid came up and started shouting at him that what he was doing was illegal. He explained that what he was doing was perfectly legal because he had checked with authorities. Then he took out his camera and took the guy's picture. He told him that since the guy was threatening him, he was going to make a complaint to the police and give them a copy of his picture for identification. Then he turned around and continued hunting. The kid was near tears by the time they left.
