readings 11:37 guess what it was!!!

Square nails are wrought-iron age.. there are a tone of impurities in the iron from that age and with good reason. The impurities help in the stability of the microstructure. Sounds odd I know.. but without ferrite and other impurities in the iron the iron from that age would have been to rigid and have a very high tendency to snap. As metal degrades and oxidizes it can leech minerals back into the soul but I tend to think it's porous surface that is caused by the oxidation that effects the return signal to the coil ( but I could well be wrong) the metallurgy side of it would matter depending on when and where the nails where made. The iron content and it's method of separation from ore could play a part in it as well.

^^ 11:37 and I said... another Zinc Penny to myself... I was on a green that had a mix of old and new and I thought I had it all hunted out of the old goodies...

Here is an example of why you should listen to CT Todd...

^^ Then I was begging for another 11:37 :)

If you have an area that produces old silvers, just keep going back and dig all the iron signals out until all the grunts are gone. After a few hunts of digging out iron, I guarantee you will find good signals that the iron was hiding. It all depends on how badly you want to find the keepers...HH

I am new to the CTX myself and have found these signals to be frustrating as well. After much scouring this forum and trying to absorb as much of the vast wealth of information and knowledge as I can I have started treating these like potential gold signals and use each one I decide to dig as a learning experience. One thing for me that has helped was finally finding a location that is pretty good sized (around twenty acres or so) and has a great mix of targets. Some areas are almost bare of targets but what is out there are deeper and one can take the time needed on and individual target and see what the machine has to say before digging it. The outer fringes have a good mix of the more common items found everywhere but not so much that it is overwhelming. Yesterday I hit this grass field, it took me two hours to make a trip across and back to my truck, I walked away with seventy two cents in modern clad, three nails, some can slaw of greatly varying ages, and one sterling silver ring that I would have skipped had I been looking somewhere with too much trash.

I had 11/37 yesterday right on a football field. It was a rusted tent pin used to hold those shelters the people use to set up shade
