RD delay

Texan

Member
It is my understanding the lower the rd the faster the response.. Coin program on v3i is factory set at 80. Lowered it to 50 and got a better response with a coin at each side of coil. My question is what do most of you run your rd at when hunting.

50 will work well in trashy ground but I run it at 100-120 field hunting, I like the more rounded, fuller sound of a target with the slower recovery speed. Recovery speed is not suppose to effect the depth but I seem to get deeper targets with slower recovery and it also helps me hear the difference between trash and a good target. It is more of a personal preference than anything.

The last ground I hunted was very trashy so a rd of 50 down from 80 should help I guess.

Howdy Texan--

I mostly hunt vacant lots and old home sites that are generally high trash areas. I usually set my RD at between 45 and 50 for best results. If you don't already have a 4x6 coil, I would highly recommend that you get one. Although it is a small coil, I have found that it gets excellent depth with the right settings and technique at trashy sites. Best of luck and...

I have a 4x6 coil I haven't used yet. What would you set the rd at using it? Also do I program the v3i for a different coil? Any other setting adjustments with smaller coil? I am new to this detector.

Hi Texan, I set the RD at 45 as a starting point when using the 4x6 Shooter coil. Sometimes as low as 40 in very extreme trash & as high as 50 in less trashy areas. Larry is right on about a fuller sound with a slower delay - especially in less trashy open areas. It just depends on your preferences and what's in the ground so experiment, experiment, experiment to see what you prefer.

Good luck with that new detector!

Texan,

At trashy sites, using the 4X6 coil, I usually start with RX Gain at 7 or 8, All Metal 55-60, AC Sens at about 70. Depending on ground conditions (intensity of trash), I will increase or decrease sensitivity settings. RD between 45-50 and physically sweep slow. I always have VCO turned on, regardless of coil selection - it's a great aid in accurately pinpointing. Experiment with Bottle Cap Reject also. I always have that adjustment on my Live Search Screen. Programming the V3i for a specific coil only affects the accuracy of the depth reading. Correlate. also can be helpful in quieting down the detector at trashy sites. Best of luck and...

Thanks to all for the great response. Now I know coil type just effects the depth.Thought it was a little elementary in the content of my questions but I sure appreciated all the advise.
